Did you know that the British press didn't used to be so anti-trans? This article from over 50 years ago celebrates Carl Macmichael's transition and love story. Not only did Carl's 15-year-old son support his father, but he was delighted to have a trans dad: "I think he's very brave. It's quite handy to have mum and dad the same person."
Shortly after socially transitioning, Carl asked Thelma O'Sullivan to become his nurse in 1969. She helped Carl medically transition for 2 years while realizing her feelings for him. "Many people have ridiculed Carl, and I suppose some people will think me odd for falling in love with him. But I don't care," she explained. "He has gone through a great deal and I hope I can give him a little of the happiness that he is seeking."
Like most trans people accessing medicine at the time, Carl claimed to have XY chromosomes. Having XY chromosomes and being capable of giving birth is extraordinarily rare. There is only one documented case of an individual with Swyer Syndrome, mixed XX/XY chromosomes, giving birth without IVF. This leaves us to wonder if he told this to newspapers for legitimacy and access to transition medication. We'll never know. All the names in the article are pseudonyms, so there was never any follow-up after 1971.

Remaking this post since I’m pretty sure it got deleted, and a lot of people found it very helpful. This is a medical diagram of before and after bottom surgery for trans femmes.

I’m no different than you. I don’t long for war over peace, I’m not superhuman to bear the bombs, the famine, the heat, the loss of all sorts of comfort and of our dignity. I’m not more comfortable than you relying on other people’s money, much less asking for it. I can’t make my heart not hurt when my little sister cries from hunger.
Imagine you, a normal person, suddenly having to feed your family of 10 with a single kilo of flour (on a good day) that cost $200. Imagine the stress and humiliation of paying $1,300 a month for a room with no electricity, no water, no windows, that’s infested with mice and cockroaches. Could you bear it? We’re not handling the situation better than you would. We’re breaking apart and we keep living because we must.
So please, if you understand how hard it is, help us. It’s okay if you only have $5 to give and it’s okay if you don’t even have that, if you can only share. Just please don’t ignore us. Imagine being a normal person in these circumstances, and people ignore your calls for help.

I think I'm probably that coworker that people post about... (had to drop out of school because inability to retain or even absorb anything they tried to "teach" me)
But also, I think we should always try to learn things, not just in high school but our whole lives. Even if you have to do so in a way that is different to others. Knowledge is important. I was one of those "they teach useless things in American schools now rather than life skills like cooking or doing taxes or writing resumes etc" for a long time before I realized that you're being taught how to use your brain, and not necessarily expected to need to know scientist-level mathematics in your day-to-day adult life. Learning history is more about learning that it repeats itself and hopefully preventing some of the more horrific parts from being repeated. Stuff like that
I still think more "common sense" life skills should be brought back ie. home economics or whatever its called, but teach it alongside the other stuff as well. But most of all, don't be too hard on yourself if some of these things flew over your head at first. I know firsthand it's easy to feel cynical about the state of schooling in the USA right now but once you learn the real reason why some of the things are done/taught the way they are, the easier it is to understand why learning is so important to begin with.
Be honest do you think that actually learning things in high school is important
yeah dude or else youre gonna be that coworker people post about
