I'm struggling writing a fanfic, I'm not sure if this has been asked before but, do you think it's better to write in past tense or present tense?
I personally think it comes down to the author's choice. As long as you're consistent with it and not hopping from present to past and back again, you'll be fine 鉂わ笍
(if you're worried about doing that, find someone who can beta read for you to check and make sure)

im obviously not asking for every cute fluffy ship art to come with a serious analysis but sometimes it is funny to see an endless sea of generic ship art of a character who would have insane emotional hangups around romance and this doesn鈥檛 seem to come up even once

Okay, you know what? After reading this post, I jokingly said we should all just make a pact to reblog it five times a day forever. So I'm gonna do this louder for the people in the back:
AO3 WAS CREATED BY FANS, FOR FANS
AO3 IS RUN BY FANS (VOLUNTEERS, NO LESS)
AO3 IS PART OF THE NON-PROFIT, ORGANIZATION FOR TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS
AO3 IS NOT OWNED BY ANY COMPANIES AND DOES NOT EARN REVENUE
AO3 OPERATES ON DONATIONS FROM FANS
again:
AO3 WAS CREATED BY FANS, FOR FANS

"why do I want to be a writer" I say, as though I am not compelled by otherworldly forces at all hours of the day to put together the messiest sentences known to mankind just to feel alive

One thing I鈥檝e noticed about AI users is that they are completely repulsed by the notion of feeling bad or frustrated for even the slightest moment

Shout out to Characters who are shells of their former selves! You died and you鈥檙e not coming back! You don鈥檛 recognize yourself and neither does anyone else, and it鈥檚 anyone鈥檚 guess what the fuck you鈥檙e supposed to be now!

Is it just me or has a lot of fandom forgotten what "AU" means? It's short for Alternate Universe. I keep seeing people talking about, like, "fake dating AU" or "only one bed AU." Unless your characters exist in a world where a) beds don't exist or b) beds exist in such abundance there could not POSSIBLY be only one of them, that's not an AU. It's just a regular degular story.

characters apologizing for things they have no control over. mumbling sorry while losing consciousness. feeling ashamed of a bleeding wound. embarrassed when an infection sets in. deep seated feverish guilt when they need to be carried, when their legs won't keep them upright anymore and they lean heavy on a friend, slurring apologies..........

i love it when characters are unfair, actually. i love it when they鈥檙e uncouth and cranky and hypocritical, i love it when they have cognitive dissonances, i love it when they make good and bad choices for the wrong reasons. i love when they鈥檙e short to anger and hard to understand. i love it when they鈥檝e destroyed themselves for nothing but can鈥檛 even see either part of it yet. i love it when they鈥檙e messy and selfish and bad at communicating. i love it when they get convinced of their own ego and stuck in a feedback loop regarding their own warped paranoia. i love it when characters actively make their lives unknowingly harder for themselves. i love it when characters don鈥檛 know they鈥檙e in a story. i love it when characters are like real people

one of my favorite things to do in limited perspective is write sentences about the things someone doesn't do. he doesn't open his eyes. he doesn't reach out. i LOVE sentences like that. if it's describing the narrator, it's a reflection of their desires, something they're holding themselves back from. there's a tension between urge and action. it makes you ask why they wanted or felt compelled to do that, and also why they ultimately didn't. and if it's describing someone else, it tells you about the narrator's expectations. how they perceive that other person or their relationship. what they thought the other person was going to do, or thought the other person should have done, but failed to. negative action sentences are everything.
