My 1st painting / commission in April 2016
After returning to painting and taking my 1st commission, to paint a landscape found I loved it and it was an answer to finding the light at the end of the dark tunnel.
I was able to express myself through art, not written words and following a number of other landscapes bright and cheerful I think this was an expression where my journey had begun and where I wanted to go.

The next target or goal I placed was to pass the panic attack test and step out into town where I had avoided all these months and face the unknown and meet and chat to strangers, go shopping. This is when I discovered Karen Cross independent handmade arts & craft store Naissance store, in my hometown. Met with Karen and after showing photos of my art with her encouragement that my paintings would be the idea to show in her store.
Downton Castle Oil Painting 100 x 50 cm delighted to had this painting in Naissance De Store in Solihull Drury Lane
Much delight having my collection of paintings on display in Naissance De
This made me feel great, up to now I was my critic and family, friends.
My first website
In the meantime, I set up my website done nothing like this before it was a good learning kerb and decided my next goal would be to show them to the public gallery.
http://paulasabout.artweb.com
Local art groups
I then set about looking for local art groups around my area to join in order to be able to have an opportunity to display my art,
Joined them in the past but never at that time wanted to show.
But to my dismay found they were fully booked a waiting list. Then found an art group which turned out you had to apply for a job, fill out an application form, and wait for an interview and then they would make a decision. After looking at the membership it occurred to me it was made up of BA artists and would stand no chance of getting in. Plus I felt the public don’t care if the artist has a BA degree or not it comes down if they like the painting or not.
Oil painting on box canvas 20 x 24 inch Inspired by the Bluebells in spring at my local woods
Look on the bright side Oil painting on box canvas 20 x 24 inch
Decision made to make big step to the unknown
So fuck it will do it myself and hire the gallery myself.
The gallery space was too large for one artist and space was fully booked up for the following year.
I approached Karen about the idea and sharing this with the other artists in her store, and name the show after her store, thought this would help promote her store along with the other artists. She loved the idea and so I booked the gallery for Summer 2017.
Please take a look of our short film of our Summer Exhibition 2017
https://www.facebook.com/paul.turner.79274089/videos/10207931357801947/
Unfortunately for several reasons out of Karen’s control the business failed and closed down soon afterwards However I carried on with the exhibition plans this did not deter me with my goal.
I posted on Facebook if anybody would wish to join us and out from this Paul Turner replied and it was apparent he was on the same wavelength.
Paul & I met chatted about the plans and out of this the name Core Collective was born. With Paul’s help, he designed the logo and promotional posters. Including the Core Collective statement.
The idea of the Core Collective are for like minded artists coming together to sharing costs for exhibitions and help each other promote our art to the community. From our 1st exhibition in 2016 to the end of 2017 the Core Collective had five exhibitions our membership is growing from artists, landscape painters, Birmingham cityscapes, abstract artists, 3D, photographers, needlework and sculptures.
Plus we had the TV cameras coming down to cover our Summer Exhibition 2017 and being interviewed on camera.
From that small roots grow and the buds form, new growth, flowers are forming.

Great success May / July 2017

First Step

Goal, 1st step is the hardest, moving on with your life
When I first took the first step back into painting, in 2016, after a number of years of not picking up a tube of paint, I just wondered if I could do it again and will I enjoy painting again.
What encouraged me in returning was it was a goal I set for myself suffering from deep depression (Mental Health Therapies advice set daily goals) and deciding to come off from medication, the challenge was simply to try. Anybody who knows or lives with chronic depression will understand facing the outside world can be a step too far, it has to come from your inner self, to challenge and break the cycle.
Background how I felt taking for antidepressants tablets
How I felt during my black days, empty and alone
Not sure if I’m right or wrong but as the illness grew the stronger the tablets were prescribed and somehow it made things fill worst an emptiness inside, I knew then I had to do something otherwise I will be on them for months, and maybe years & stronger yet. I hated myself relying on them to get through the day. So like smoking, I stopped yep the doctor was concerned about the decision I made and the possible side effects. (don’t stop anti depressants or panic attacks tablets without 1st seeking doctors advice)
But I think in the long run it was the best decision for myself to have made, it’s not an easy decision a risk.
Meeting with Disability Resource Centre (DRC)

It was months later when I made an appointment with Disability Resource Centre, the charity who helps and supports folk like me to rebuild their self-esteem & confidence with training etc, help them on a path.
I met John from DRC after chatting about the reasons why I left work and what support I could have in coping with dyslexia, Once I was in a position to consider going back into the workplace, at that stage facing a PC was not on the cards so to speak. But its down to him that he encouraged me to rethink what my future career could be.
After all, I was in a position to try something new, with the support they could provide in the long run they could help.
But in the meantime, the idea of rebuilding my self-esteem and confidence go back to painting and see where that leads me, volunteering to teach art may be an option.
Outcome of meeting with DRC
This inspired me to paint again, not only it felt like it replaced the tablets in coping with the illness, it made me feel like life had started inside me.
Having Dyslexia & Verbal Dyspraxia all my life and found ways of coping with it, until a change in circumstances at work I was made to feel incompetent just picking up the phone.
For further information about dyslexia and verbal dyspraxia.
Those voices inside your head telling you are crap, worthless were vanishing.
The painting was the start of my new life of discovering without painting I don’t know where I would be today.

It’s not the end of depression I still get bouts of it but found if I concentrate on my art it helps.

Quartermaster 1000 Trades
Enjoyment
I fully enjoy taking part in these independent handmade arts & crafts markets. The artwork you see with them is not found on your high street. We are small independent handmade artists, enthusiastic about our artwork, just stop & chat with us. I enjoy meeting my customers and chatting about my art and sharing the history of Birmingham, promoting my art to the public.
It’s strange mind you the common question most artists are asked “how long did it take you” what sort of question is that, are they weighing up if its worth the price. It feels like an insult to us. We are handmade crafters, artists, potters, jewellery designers, woodcrafters. Materials are brought then handmade into the final artwork these are unique designs.

Brief family history of the Custard Factory
I have a soft spot for the Custard Factory in Digbeth as it was my mother in law first job working in an office young as she was her memories of working and meeting the man himself she has fond and happy memories. One of her proud stories is being invited by Alfred Bird to celebrate his gift to Solihull, his family home and land becoming known as Tudor Grange Park his kind donation for the community of his home becoming an education college.
Brief history of the founder of the Birds Custard
In its past history, the home of Birds Custard enjoyed by all around the world, where Alfred Bird (1811-1875) came up with the golden recipe it was all down to his wife Elizabeth who had both egg and yeast allergies. Which inspired Alfred by professional was a manufacturer and chemist working in Bull Street, Birmingham. To replace eggs with his own invention cornflour, egg free custard. In its long history of making this delicious vanilla custard. ‘Alfred Bird and Sons Ltd’ remained in the family business right up to after the WII when it was sold to General Foods and moving out of Digbeth, Birmingham to its new home in Banbury.
Now we think of food allergies as growing new modern lifestyle peanuts, milk, oats, wheat along with berries, so many of my friends have to check each purchase and eating out is a nightmare. My family are fortunate that we don’t suffer from such allergies. We can indulge in yummy food, without any fears.
So you could say Alfred Bird lead the way in supplying alternative easy choice for mothers to avoid food allergies.

Christmas Market 2017 held at Custard Factory, Digbeth, Birmingham
Paperdolls Handmade Market – “Digmas” independent Christmas Market – 25th Nov 2017
It was a bit of worry if I would be able to go along due to I had a bad fall in October and silly me broke a bone in my foot, Damn inconvenient and painful of my foot to that to me.

Paperdolls Handmade Market day
Website details http://www.paperdollshandmade.com/
About Paperdolls Handmade, info from their website.
The Paperdolls began in the summer of 2013 when we, Jo Dowsett & Carolyn Carter – two likeminded designer makers decided to spread our love of all things handmade and get people making again.
We began by meeting monthly with the intention to eventually bring together local crafters and shake up the traditional craft fair, providing local shoppers with a creative alternative to the high street. Our markets have grown over the years since we started. We showcase a diverse & unique hand-picked selection of arts & crafts by local makers and designers. There is also a pop-up cake shop, live music and kids activities.
My day at the Custard Factory
Great day meeting up with old customers as well new and really lovely having them come along to seek me out on my stall. Some of my favourites paintings were sold to new customers will be nice to see them again.
It was a delightful meeting the other artists, in particular, Yasmin Hook & Madeline Norris

Ending the year 2017 for the Core Collective, was busy for me and the other seven artists arranging our end of year show along with planning the new year exhibition in 2018.
With Christmas coming I hope you can spare some time popping along to our Fine Arts Exhibition at Solihull Hospital we are having exceptional feedback on our show. Why not celebrate the season with us and surprise you’ve loved ones and show how brave you are with a painting and not the usual boring gifts. With your help of donation goes towards our local charity FOSH Friends of Solihull Hospital.

Hope you enjoy looking at my landscapes of the local area I was inspired with my walks in Brueton Park natural walk. Painting in oils on box canvases using palette knife loves the texture it makes landscapes bounces out from the canvas. Why paint the edges it gives the appearance of 3D.

Fine Arts Exhibition, Hidden Talents presented Arches Project, Digbeth
I have already spoken about my delight in taking part with Arches Project what I did not say what the big surprise and delight I had prior to the Grand Opening Night.
The week leading up to showing in Digbeth, I had a surprise email, short and sweet an urgent message to get in touch with the gallery, oh boy the fear which was running in my head what has happened has my painting fallen down and been damaged.
What a relief nothing like that but an invite to paint with none other the guest artist all the way from London to paint with him, what an opportunity was that, not to be missed.
Despite the F*** foot which was giving me the great grief of pain (turns out broken bone) some 6 weeks later found out.
Invite to paint with Dan Llywelyn Hall
Painting with none other with Dan Llywelyn Hall, what fun that’s going to be painting and learning off a master.
Well, the day was a very cold when we arrived on time at the Custard Factory waiting for him to arrive and set up painting outside, good job I brought along John to help carry my stuff he left me to it while he went back to help out Evette at Arches Project.
The other two young artists Asad Abbas & Hannah Thomas carried on with their projects, felt sorry for Hannah she was not fully prepared how cold working outside would be. I wish Hannah all the success at uni hope she fulfils her dreams with her art. Lovely meeting her and her dad.

WOW famous artist on our door step painting at Custard Factory, I wonder what will his neighbour will think of his painting rrr he is only the new owner of the Custard Factory.
Dan arrived and took him on a quick tour around the Custard Factory and he began painting Goot the Green Man.
Now if anybody who is not aware of Dan’s preface to paint outside in all weathers, then today would not bother him, unlike the other two artists by which time was very cold.
It was good to watch and chat with him about how he goes about composing his paintings, like me he does not stretch the cityscape he just goes for it. We both have that in common. He builds up colour wet on wet in layers of colour and over time the shades of colour give that depth of perspective. Love his freestyle of using paint he must get through some brushes mind you.

I was close to finish my painting only the people to do, really enjoyed the experience of painting on the streets of Birmingham, will be doing it again and follow Dan’s ideas with my next project with a few of mine own thrown in. Dan completed his painting back in his hotel.
We both finally left when the light was too dark to see what colour on the palette never mind to paint on canvas.
We parted and left him to find his bed for the night and the following day he went off wandering the streets of Birmingham. I am afraid my foot required full days rest before Opening Night. However, Dan carried on painting and if you pop into Arches Gallery you can see his end results.
Opening Night
Opening Night at Arches Project was a great success really enjoyed the night meeting the other artists Iona Burchell, Emma Connolly, Joanne Strange, Oliver Quarter & Kat Fennell plus my guests Kevin Thomas, Mark Owen among others.

Dans Day Out Acrylic on canvas Painting with Dan Llywelyn Hall, how many artist get to paint with such artist of his calibre
Spotted Dog & curry
The night didn’t end at the gallery we went onto the Spotted Dog my favourite Digbeth pub and were joined by Asad, Dan and his partner. Few more pints slipped down during our night very busy fun night and glad to say Dan is impressed with Arches Gallery space along with Birmingham plus with the Spotted Dog, it was full of atmosphere. The night ended with us going for a curry along with Dan & partner.
Have to say it was well worth meeting him and getting his advice on my art which I will show him forward onto him once I feel free to wander the streets of Birmingham to paint.
Please take a look at my other story about the show

Fine Arts Exhibition “Hidden Talents” presented by Arches Project, Digbeth, Birmingham Nov 2017
Well, I was excited about taking part in this year’s show with Arches Project in Nov 2017. I considered this to be my big one for promoting my art to Birmingham. I was given the chance to paint on larger canvases for my cityscapes of Birmingham, this time the decision I took was to paint more of the history of Birmingham. I love and proud of this city achievements the second city, the art and…

This year has been a busy time for me entering other galleries around Birmingham, along with arranging, sorting out the Core Collective Fine Art Exhibitions.
Anchor Gallery at Gunmakers Arms, Birmingham
I have been following Anchor Gallery on twitter for a while now, this is where I saw there posting for calling for artists to enter into the gallery.
However, the gallery pops up anywhere around the Midlands which can be argued it never in one place longer another to find a permanent home.
My art on display
Really happy this was sold to the pub.
However, they like to put a different spin on showing art, like it or not it’s different way of displaying art, photos, music and film along with reading poetry.
Only criticism one could lay at their door was unable to identify any artist work showing, With an absence of a booklet identifying the artist’s work it remained anonymous
The exhibition was on a week and you had to pay to go and see any of the events they had on!!. I entered 4 paintings showing the story of Our Lady travels around the Gun Quarter in Birmingham
Pete Davies & Kevin Thomas photos on display.
Pete’s & Kevin photos on display.
The location of the Anchor Gallery chosen for this year’s event could not be better, The Gunmakers Arms, what could be better than a pub goes and view art over a pint.
Opening Night was FREE entry unlike the beer & food, but yummy all the same.
Here There be Dragons presented by Anchor Gallery
Fazeley Canal was built for the purpose of goods to be delivered to London. The Gun Quarter would ship the cargo on canal to London. The name of the painting is after the song tune for the Warwickshire Lads to mark the opening of the Birmingham Canal 1769
Proof House built in 1813 is the only business besides London where shotguns, small arms guns barrels are tested before going on sale.
Second Breakfast , proudly hanging up in its new home, so pop down to see it for yourself.
Sweet Leaf, Acrylic painting showing Our Lady visit to the pub, busy place for visitors
