Lupin III Part II may not technically be one of my favorite anime, but it is one of the more enjoyable Lupin TV shows, and that should count for something. It's great just how many international locations the Lupin gang find themselves in with their endless heisting. While the first series took place mostly in Japan, Part II has the gang spreading its wings and making the entire world Lupin's back yard.

Of course, I'm accentuating the positive in this video, skipping weak episodes like "Curse Case Scenario", "Now Museum, Now You Don't", "Twins Pique", "Khan Job", "Pretty Cluckin' Insane", and "Heroes and Vixens". I only wanted to talk about four and five star episodes, and naturally, among the English-dubbed ones.

I just wish they had put these on Blu-Ray and dubbed the remaining episodes that weren't dubbed by Phuuz. But perhaps in the future Epcar Entertainment and Discotek will do just that. Hope springs eternal.

I have to be honest, folks. I was baffled as to what to do with this one. Space Pirate Mito is far from an optimal choice for a video. It's such an annoying experience. And not even a really bombastically terrible experience I can have fun with. It's just a desperately irritating, disappointing series that exudes obnoxiousness.

I usually like neat space pirate antics, but there's so little of that here it's not worth rewatching after this. I will never revisit this. No, not even to review the second season, even if it's somehow dubbed down the road some day. Well, I don't know, maybe if I'm out of ideas for videos.

All I can say is that I did my best with what I was given and that the next video will probably be better.

(Even had to pad this shit out with "storyline" material.)

Shinchiro Watanabe is one of my favorite anime directors. He is a true talent. Or, at least, he used to be, right? Hasn't he kind of lost the sauce a bit over time? Carole & Tuesday is fun, but it sure isn't a Cowboy Bebop or a Samurai Champloo. I think if the music weren't as good as it is and the other production values weren't as well done, the show might've been just a small footnote in Watanabe's career.

But damn is the music good. It's sooooo good, people. If you get anything from this video, it's that you need to download the soundtrack (or look it up on Spotify, or whatever you crazy kids are up to these days). The show itself isn't half bad, either.

Hiya! Been a while, hasn't it?

I just wanted to start this "half" of the year with something really simple and dumb. And few things are simpler than Dragon Ball movies. This one in particular is kind of just, as I say, "action figures crashing into each other". But that's fine, Resurrection F is still kind of fun!

No fuss, no bookend material, just a short video about DBZ, which is somehow blocked in a few countries because Toei is a dick.

I was pretty lucky this half of the year to cover anime with pretty good dubs, except a couple. I tried to get a variety of them and succeeded beautifully. Now if only I can keep that up for the rest of the year.

Man, that Zeta Gundam dub is rough. But a few weeks ago, I saw people defend it on the Gundam subreddit. I don't really understand how anyone could find it good. It's so stiff-sounding and disinterested.

If I had to decide which is worse, underacting (Zeta Gundam) or overacting (Nadesico), I guess I'd choose overacting, because at least it sounds like actors are interested in the material. Nadesico's dub still sucks, but it sucks less than Zeta Gundam's.

Anyway, I have to tread closely when it comes to stuff like my after-credits scene. Mr. President is just champing at the bit to imprison dissidents. If it happens to me, avenge me.

Oh, and for the record, the Penguin Highway dub is excellent.

Look, I just think putting on a suit and flying around calling yourself Batman doesn't necessarily make you qualified to be Batman!

Oh, I mean, hey, that Berserk is a pretty neat show, right? It's kind of like LoGH in a medieval setting. And with demons. Okay, so it's not that much like LoGH, except that Griffith would make an interesting counterpart to guys like Oskar von Ruenthal and Reinhard von Lohengramm. Guts certainly isn't Yang or Julian, that's for sure.

How did I get sidetracked? Oh, right, I was talking about LoGH instead of Berserk. Which is stupid, because Berserk deserves its own conversation. It's a damn good manga and the TV show, despite some of its flaws, may prove to be a favorite of mine in the future.

So put your glasses on, nothing will be wrong, there's no blame, there's no fame, it's up to you.

TMS just dropped the release date, title, and preview for the first 2D animated Lupin III movie since 1996’s Dead or Alive!

The movie will be released in theaters in Japan on Friday, June 27th. No information is available (as of this moment) on an international release. It features a new rock song by the band B’z called "The IIIRD Eye."

LUPIN THE IIIRD THE MOVIE: IMMORTAL BLOODLINE — for the parts of it we see in this preview, anyway — seems to take place on an island somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle. Now, in Mystery of Mamo, they went to an unmarked island in the Caribbean (where Mamo seemed to be headquartered with his cloning technology), which certainly could be the same island. Oddly, outside of Mystery of Mamo, the Bermuda Triangle has only been home to a single Lupin adventure: Part 2, Episode 95, “From the Ghost Ship With Love.”

Pen Pen Evolution Episode 2 - Penguin Highway

Martian Successor Nadesico is one of the few anime I've purchased on Blu-Ray that I regret. It's not like it's one of the worst anime I've ever watched, but it's so mediocre, I can't imagine ever wanting to revisit it. It's one of those dime-a-dozen space shows of the 90s that frankly could have been a short OVA and been fine, but they made it into a 26-episode TV series and it just dragged. Not to mention, its ADV English dub is horrendous. Made it a chore to get through.

Maybe avoid this series. But don't avoid my takedown.

Violet Evergarden. More like VIOLENT Evergarden, amirite? 80% of the show is touching moments and tragic pitfalls and then, like, 20% of it is people getting shot in the eye or having their arms fall off and hit the ground with the sound of a sandwich hitting the ground. There's a fight on top of a train, and I haven't seen that since Baccano. Come for the feels, stay for the keels (kills).

Speaking of the feels, would you consider this series "tragedy porn"? I've ventured into this territory before, and I have to say, I think it may be tragedy porn, but I'm willing to hear the opinion of others on the matter. Maybe it's just straight-up tragic drama and I'm overreacting. But regardless, Violet Evergarden is a pretty solid show.

As long as you don't mind the huge age differences in the romances. Yuck.

So, Detective Conan/Case Closed… what a weird franchise. I'm not sure who it's supposed to be for. It's marketed to little kids in Japan, even though it has horribly violent content and an ongoing serialized main storyline. But can you market it to older kids or adults, despite it having a lot of kiddie shit? I doubt it. So who is it for? And who is this special for, by the way? I don't know, but I did kind of enjoy it. That roller coaster murder was gruesome!

Kind of a short video this time. Next time is a longer one.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is definitely my favorite Gundam title. The mechanical designs, the complexity of the competing factions, the mood and atmosphere, the characters and themes, all make this my favorite mecha series, period. Even above Evangelion, which features my favorite penguin! (But favorites positions are subject to change over time.)

But I don't think Zeta Gundam is perfect, and in this video, I go over some of the problems with it, and especially the disappointing movie trilogy they made.

I only wish I had gone into themes in these videos, but I think you can figure them out just by watching these review videos.

On the storyline material, I just like giving my camera man the business. And if that means embarrassing myself to the tune of The Sound of Music, I will.

Welcome back to Otaku Evolution! It's 2025 and boy have I got things planned for you, the viewer! Assuming I'm not just screaming out into the void, that is.

Speaking of screaming, there sure is a lot of that in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Maybe not as much as in G Gundam, but there's plenty. Everybody seems to be a little on edge, which is one of the reasons I like it (but also a reason some people dislike it). Characters might just fly off the handle completely at any time. It's neat!

In this first part of a two-parter, I take a look at Z Gundam's premise and characters. There's quite a few characters and I don't even get to all of them. But the ones I do are fairly well covered, in my opinion, at least in a snapshot sense.

Most importantly (not really), we have a continuation of the storyline stuff in my last OE video, and it seems that Pen Pen has been busy in the meantime. Busy drinking, that is.

As usual, I'm here to look at all the English dubs of the anime I've covered in the second part of 2024. The strongest by far was Black Lagoon's. I love that dub. In fact, I think it's the final Grand Pantheon dub I hadn't reviewed yet. What will I do from now on? Well, (un)fortunately, OE isn't just about really good things.

As for my bookend material, it looks like while I'm busy griping (and sleeping), Pen Pen and some of my other colleagues are taking action against strongmen across the globe! I hope I don't get pinned for this. All I did was arrest Putin! (Meanwhile, in real life, only the Claims Adjuster carries out justice.)

Have a lucky new year! It's probably going to be a rough one. But I'll be here, so lean on me.
