the unicode for, like, dashes is so fun to me. like you have the hyphen-minus, makes sense, two commonly-used symbols in the same script look basically the same and they're used in totally different contexts that are very obvious from the surrounding characters, so even if you split them up people would probably just use one or the other. people even use it for all the dashes since the others aren't on keyboards!

then there's the hyphen, for if you don't like using a catch‐all, or just despise math as much as humanly possible

and to complete the split, the minus sign. how else will people know 6−2(7) is an equation?

also minus emoji too but. who uses that. for an example, idk, 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦➖👦. i feel like it would only get used as a dingbat. no one does emoji equations that's weird

of course, the em dash, one that actually gets SOME use because things —like google docs— replace triple hyphen-minuses with it. a nice indicator of a break that's long enough to actually separate things.

the en dash is the em dash's weird younger brother. things like google docs replace double hyphen-minuses with it so it usually gets used by mistake. this happens a lot so it's not like using it for a break is the worst thing you could do, but you should really stick to things like a 5:00–6:15 nowhereville–phoneyburg train. and apparently if you have a prefix or adjective attached to something else with a hyphen and what it's attached to is multiple words separated by spaces instead of just the other word by the hyphen. but i don't think anyone reading your thing is gonna notice that.

no negative sign though. that feels kind of messed up since there's another one for math and putting minuses where you're not doing subtraction feels wrong. especially because then you have to do even more parentheses multiplication to go ‘it's not -y−x, it's -y(-x), what's even the point of variables anymore i'm meant not to have to deal with this accursed symbols ’ c'mon. you did so many variant minuses and combining characters. i just want multiple similar symbols in the same fucking context to be encoded differently. i could at least justify the hyphen-minus.
