Day 6 (noon): Lab Rat
Nancy spent the rest of her day warming up to Lieutenant Mills, a friendly face who owed the District Attorney a favour after he helped mend an undercover military case that had gone off of the rails a few years back. That very DA had been none other than Carson Drew, Nancy’s beloved father. How convenient. Mills may have temporarily forgotten this dept but Nancy always said that a favor owed was an opportunity gained. With some finessing, empty promises of staying out of trouble, and a quick call to her father regarding the case, Nancy had somehow managed to get the Lieutenant to slip her a keycard to the lab’s lower levels. However it seems like a certain conspiracy driven townie had spotted the exchange with a sly side glance. Hopefully he’d keep the knowledge of this little trade to himself...
“You swear this is only for a school report on laboratory procedure and architecture, Ms. Drew?” Mills questioned, pressing the keycard to Nancy’s palm.
“Cross my heart, hope to die.” Nancy answered playfully with a wink before turning on her heels and racing back to her set of vintage wheels. She’d been schmoozing this woman for what seemed like hours with one goal in mind, get into that armed passage!
....
Roanoke Lab looked different in the daylight, though equally as daunting. As Nancy made her way down into the crater for the second time that day, she was particularly thankful she had taken rock climbing as an extracurricular. Entering through the same side door and slinking through shadows and around walls, Nancy navigated back to the entrance of the laboratory’s basement. Finally, she thought to herself as she impatiently scanned the recently procured keycard and heard the satisfying hiss of hydraulic pressure opening the large metal doors.
Legions of the same curious spores as those she had seen the days previously came floating out in waves. Nancy hoped dearly she hadn’t just sealed Strangerville’s fate in doing so... or her own. As she decended the stairs she began to feel light headed and hazy. These undoubtedly infectious spores had begun to swarm her and she realized, too late, the consequence.

Day 6 (morning): Roanoke Lab
Early the next morning while Strangerville still lay sleeping, Nancy awoke, downed an oatmilk latte, dressed in all black, and headed out to the secret laboratory in her trusty blue roadster that Ned had graciously left her the evening prior. Her blood was racing with excitement as she felt so close to uncovering something big, something devastating. She had learned early on in her sleuthing career to cover her appearance when “casing a joint”, the sunglasses and widebrimmed hat she adorned herself with helped with that.
Driving down into the crater proved itself a tad more difficult than anticipated given that the government had blocked off the exit, so Nancy parked her roadster at the top of the crater and climbed her way down towards the lab. She noted that it sat there menacingly, yet quiet. When she reached the back entrance it seemed as if whoever had left, had left in quite a hurry- taking the high security fence with them. Lucky her.
The moment she entered through one of the side doors that had been carelessly left ajar, she could tell that something was seriously wrong. Not just wrong... but unnatural. It smelled of chemicals and swampland but the odor was the least of her concern. A lab that used to be entirely sterile and heavily guarded was now abrasively empty and left in shambles, with confidential records and files scattered in every room. It’s a goldmine! Nancy thought, as she eagerly began to pace the room in search of fresh evidence. Hopefully here she could find enough dirt to piece together an impressively meticulous dossier. She scoured the lab, sorting through dusty boxes brimming with information the general public was never supposed to get its hands on before coming upon an electronic door that had remained armed and, despite Nancy’s steadfast efforts, locked. Discouraged that she was certain she’d have to get her hands on some sort of keycard elsewhere and would not be able to solve this mystery then and there, she went back to scanning the parts of the lab that she could access. It felt odd not running into anyone here... the whole building felt like a carcass, and she was the only one outstaying her welcome.
After an hour of searching and collecting, Ms. Drew finished her first trip to Roanoke Lab (as she was calling it now) by hacking into the laboratory mainframe and surfing through hundreds of “guarded” lab cases. It seems as if the government was conducting a high risk experiment under the entire town of Strangerville... The Mother was being referenced again. It was clear now to Nancy that she would have to gather some “qualitative” data before returning and that said data would need to include a way to access the lower levels of this conspiracy den. For now however, she had enough compelling evidence to compile her dossier, so with her hands full she made her way out of the crater. As she climbed back into her roadster and lay her evidence in the passenger seat she remembered that she had been so taken by the environment around her down there that she had completely forgotten to check for security cameras. Rookie mistake.
“Fuck!” She swore, for the first time in what seemed like ages. Hannah would have been disappointed. Whatever, she thought, then peeled away from the edge of the crater, flooring it back to town as the sun slowly began to rise.

Day 5: Something in the Water
The fifth day in Strangerville brought a bit of a hiatus, however you wouldn’t believe it by how the morning begun. While Nancy was washing her face in the communal restroom, shared by the other tenants of the trailer park, a dark and flowery tendril snaked through the drain and would have coiled around her had she not been so observant and quick on her feet. Horrified yet intrigued, Nancy ran to look at the toilets and the showers to find that sure enough, they too were growing their own flora. In utter disbelief Nancy took haste at photographing her findings and reporting in her fieldnotes what had occurred. She was in the middle of delicately taking samples of the haunting vines when her phone beeped- her hometown sweetheart, Ned Nickerson, had missed her dearly and was informing her that he taken the liberty to drive up in her vintage blue roadster to see her (with Carson Drew’s approval of course). Unfortunately, the mystery would have to wait. Fortunately, she’d get to see her “Neddie Bear”!
He gleefully picked her up at 4:00pm and they headed out to a nearby hotspot in town that hosted locally grown farm-to-table entrees, outdoor seating, and pink globular specs of... fairy dust? Either love was in the air, or chemical spores were... Nancy reminded herself to look into this afterwards though she was pretty sure it was the latter.
Ned and Nancy enjoyed a warm evening of playful flirting coupled with catching Ned up on the details of the case. Ned always enjoyed helping Nancy wherever he could with her cases, though she rarely needed it... mostly he just loved to listen to her talk. She was always so passionate when she would go on about missing clues and suspicious criminal activity.
As the night progressed they found themselves cozily sharing a blanket on a clifftop overlooking the horizon.
“Ned look,” Nancy exclaimed while jumping to her feet, “its the crater the military officials and scientists were going on about! We’ve found it!”
As they peered out at the crater, the secret lab, and the ominous and foreboding storm clouds that shifted threateningly above, things became a lot more sinister and harrowing than either of them had been expecting.
“You’ve gotta solve this Nance,” Ned whispered, eyes still on the horizon.
“I will,” Nancy hesitated briefly before taking his hand in hers, “WE will.”

Day 4: We Search Research
Stumped by the odd glowing bulbs that littered this sleepy town, Nancy Drew started and ended her day by researching and capturing photos of them. They almost seemed alien-like... could that be?
Having laid her groundwork the day before, Nancy was now prepared to reap the benefits of her efforts. Time not spent analyzing the bizarre plant life was spent listening in on all of the locals she had successfully bugged. Hours of honing in on specific subjects lent to the discovery that there was a top secret laboratory in a crater a couple miles north of town. Nancy jotted this down in her fieldnotes as she scrambled to record the coordinates. Military officials were worried about what was going on in there but were trying to enforce the general public to remain calm as “nothing was wrong”. She continued to listen in on the residents and their lives, gaining insight into the mystery that was Strangerville. Though not all insight was particularly welcome... specifically that of Mr. Roswell of Cherry Lane and his commentary on his latest bowel movement (or lack thereof, yikes).

Meanwhile, scientists were simmering with the anticipation of what was causing the recent environmental changes around the area, and the government mandated Secret Agents... well, let’s just say they were keeping an eye on Ms. Drew from the passenger seat of a black van parked deceptively oblivious on the side of her street. Though as per usual, Nancy was already 5 steps ahead of local law enforcement.

Day 3: Bugger Off!
With the microchips from The Curio Shop in tow, Nancy decided it was time to meet the locals of Strangerville, and more, find out how “strange” they really were. She had noticed a crash site behind the little kiosk she had visited the day before and had taken note to explore it later. Well, today was later. Dressed in desert chic, Ms. Drew poked around the wreckeage of the plane long enough to discover a secret door that led down to a hidden bunker. The man inside was taken by complete surprise when a charismatic 17 year old girl came knocking on his door but reluctantly let her in. Nancy talked to this crash landing survivor for hours and listened to his conspiracy ramblings about how the strange and tumultuous weather had caused him the misfortune of hitting down here in this zany ghost town. Was there any truth to these accusations? Only time would tell...
For good measure Nancy decided to microchip the man while she distracted him with a friendly hug (a sly move her beloved housekeeper, Hannah Gruen, from River Heights had taught her).
Nancy spent the rest of the day running around Strangerville and “accidentally” bumping into the local townsfolk in order to catch a quick chance to bug them. From military officials enjoying a cold drink at the rundown bar down the road to scientists stowing away in the library, Nancy worked tirelessly to lend an ear- in more ways than one.
As she was heading back to her cozy abode, she encountered another military personnel named Jessica who appeared to be afflicted by some abnormal behavior. Her eyes were wide and deranged, and her slack jaw formed an awful and unnerving smile. Nancy remembered encountering a man like this on her first day in this town, even now the thought of him made her shudder. Jessica’s limbs bent unnaturally and she was rambling in some foreign dialect about a mother in red who she, and those like her, now served. It was a good thing Nancy had an admiration for the peculiar, because this was just about as mad as it got.
Taking the opportunity to plant a microchip on the crazed individual, Nancy then irrationally and quite contrarily to Hannah’s teachings, slapped the woman across the face in hopes to shake her from this state. She didn’t stay around long enough to find out if it had worked. She needed a cold shower and a garden burger ASAP.

Day 2: The Curios Curio
Nancy had heard rumors of a local conspiracy theorist who ran an eccentric little Curio Shop out past the trailer park. Once she had mapped her way around this new and unfamiliar town, she finally found his little kiosk and was elated to see the owner was a fellow ginger! Naturally he found her quite charming so it wasn’t very difficult for Ms. Drew to procure some local gossip along with some state of the art microchips that would allow her to bug the townies and listen in on all their secrets. Nancy was never one for bugs, but being a fly on the wall... that was another thing.

Day 1: Goodbye River Heights, Hello Strangerville
Rifling through recent odd reportings and peculiar radio signals, Nancy Drew spent her spring break monitoring the austere and ominous occurrings in a bizarre little town east of River Heights. Eager for another mystery, Ms. Drew decidedly bid farewell to her cozy, retro home on Willow Lane. Strangerville was calling her, perhaps it needed her help. Nancy packed her bags and, with the financial backing and support of her father, moved into a quaint and quirky little trailer among the hazy lights and offbeat locals at the center of the town. Whatever was happening here, she was certain she’d crack the code... one bug eyed civilian at a time.
