Dear Bill Maher,

Hi Bill. Big fan. You recently said some things about Stan Lee and his legacy and how comics were meant for children and yet adults won’t give them up and try to convince themselves comics are “sophisticated literature.”

Aside from the blatant disrespect of a recently deceased person followed by underhandedly shitting on his legacy, you seem to misunderstand the significance of comics. Yes, back in your day, they were cheap disposable entertainment. However, over the years, comic book readers grew up and craved complexity in their stories. Batman was a corny detective in a bat suit and now he has a mythos as rich and complex as Heracles or King Arthur. Bronze Age Green Lantern and Green Arrow represent the conflicting ideologies of the conservatives and the hippies of the late sixties. And don’t get me started on the undertones of Anti-semitism, homophobia, Racism, etc in the X-Men.

Comic books have become what is considered American Mythology along with the American Western film. Their tropes are embedded in American culture. It sounds silly because we are a young nation with a young culture but the Man With No Name or Aquaman or Spider-Man will hold up in significance the same way Persephone or Maid Marian or goddamned Santa Claus do. Comics have been long accepted to discuss and interpret in academia.

Yes, the fandoms can be toxic. Yes, the ubiquity can be crass. But people have worked hard to turn comics into a true universe of their own. Don’t belittle them just because you don’t understand. And certainly don’t mock the man who helped make this wonderful world possible.
