Been thinking about Lilo & Stitch and the apparently changed ending (i haven't seen it myself so im going based off of other peoples' info)

I have thoughts but they're not coherent so they're under a readmore

I'm glad the general public is realizing just how fucked up of a message it's sending for Lilo to be put into the system so Nani can leave for college. Yes, there is the argument that she goes to be with David's grandma, which shows the power of community and everything, but i honestly have more beef with that.

I have a Cree friend who is mid sixties, is a grandmother, and within the past 10 years, also became the guardian of the two kids of another relative because she can no longer care for them due to drug abuse issues. This woman is fucking amazing and has put up with so much that she shouldnt have to at her age to care for these kids because they had no one else step up to care for them. And she is exhausted. She is at the age where she should be cared for by her community and honoured for all the work she has done to raise three adult kids already, but instead she has minimal support while fighting a colonialist system to care for two more kids who require way more help than she is able to give them.

So when I hear that a grandmother is put in charge of Lilo, I don't see hope in Indigenous community, i just see the blame and the work being shifted to someone else who is not equipped to care for her. In the original animated movie, it wasn't just Nani taking care of Lilo at the end, it was Nani AND David AND Juumba AND Pleakley and various other humans and aliens supporting where they could. THAT'S community, THAT'S ohana.

Plus, Nani going to college on the mainland is such a eurocentric version of individualism. Like, yes, let Nani take time for herself to pursue her dreams, but she can do that and care for Lilo is she has support, and she can do all of that on her island in her community's ways. There's something super insidious about her leaving her community to go to school when you think about the USA's history with boarding/residential schools.

Rana and Ahmed (@ranafam2) are educators from Khan Younis, with Rana as a statistics professor at the Islamic University of Gaza and Ahmed as the principal of his school: both institutions have now been destroyed.

Palestinians have survived occupation for well over a century now, and they will remain steadfast, but they need your support.

Even with the ceasefire, resources are still limited and expensive. The weekly allowance for basic provisions like baby formula and flour is about $1000. Rana is also anticipating additional costs for baby formula, clothes, and natal care as she's eight months pregnant and expecting soon.

Finally with the ceasefire, Rana is hoping to evacuate with her family altogether. The cost of evacuation per person ranges from $5000 to $7000. If Rana gives birth before she can evacuate, that puts the total anticipated cost at $49,000 (5 children, 2 adults).
