Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin, known as Moctezuma or Montezuma, ruled Tenochtitlan and the Mexica Empire between 1502 and 1520. His name means Your Lord Frowns, The Youngest Child. In 1519, he received the Spanish troops in the capital of Tenochtitlan. He was later made prisoner and died in unclear circumstances. After his death, a mexica uprising expelled the Spanish from the city, allowing his brother, Cuitlahuac, to take the throne.
My painting "Cuauhtemoc" tells the story of the fall of Tenochtitlan. Click here for a print!
