Instinct vs instruction

There are perks to being a mer's favourite handler.

For example when Jordan checked on dnap's colony tank one morning the two came to greet her as usual, but Dream was acting differently. He was a little more nervous and looking around as if they're in danger. Jordan was still new so couldn't just take mers to medical without consulting her supervisor. When asked the supervisor got weirdly offended and started berating Jordan on how they can't take mers to a clinic without visual proof of a wound, Jordan didn't buy that for a second. She saw the look in Dream's face and knew something was wrong.

Against her supervisor's instruction she took dream to a clinic room and told the vet on duty her hunch- that Dream was injured in some way- but she couldn't prove it, the vet humoured her and agreed to examine dream for any injury. The vet did find a small cut on one of Dream's tentacle arms that had been packed with sand to reduce bleeding in case predators were near, a common instinct with small and colony mers. The vet irrigated the wound and used some self adhesive bandage on the would so it won't get packed with sand again.

Jordan's supervisor was not happy she went behind their back but couldn't do much since Dream was injured and they'd get reprimanded for not listening to jordan.

Concept: Depressing dystopian factory where everything is gray and samey and the workers are called by their employee numbers by an ominous deep voice.

But it's a really great place to work with high salaries, excellent benefits, and a flexible working schedule with plenty of paid leave. They just like the dystopian aesthetic.

because the egg takes the red out of objects and people leaving them gray, the effect it would have in csapnap makes me want to cry so badly, like putting out a fire, he's dull now, no longer has that spark of emotion and courage and excitement in him, his eyes are dull and lifeless and he has a lost look, his voice isn't warm or energetic anymore, he's cold everywhere, his hot core from being a nether hybrid died, he's like a doll for worshipping the egg and he'll stay by bad and skeppy's side. it's like he's a candle after being put out, letting out the last smoke column before completely dying out

The mers

All of the mers in this au are real animals so their lower halves will always be the colour(s) the real animal is.

Dream + sapnap -

Species: blue ring octopuses.

Size: D is on the larger end of the species at ~16cm (arms included) whereas S is average for the species at ~12cm.

Behaviour: D is very friendly and happy to be handled, he also tends to try and escape to make new friends. S isn't so friendly, he's bitten multiple staff members amd has a note on his file that says 'experienced handlers only'. He will also try to escape but to cause havoc instead of be friendly.

Additional info:

They are a mated pair of colony mers that were rescued from a tidepool tangled in trash and fishing wire, Sapnap's arm needed to be amputated unfortunately from the restricted blood flow but Dream got away fairly unscathed only losing a few tentacles that later grew back.

They are venomous, but not as severe as the real blue ring. It only leaves the bitten area numb for a few hours.

George -

Species: thresher shark

Size: ~15 feet long

Behaviour: very timid upon arrival to the sanctuary, he was kept in a solitary tank for a few weeks/months as he was still healing when he was transferred, much more open and playful after healing, transferring to a mixed mer tank, starting therapy and finding some friends he can be safe with. Still sometimes protective of his back.

Additional info:

He was a victim of the shark fin trade, he was caught in a fishing net and he lost his dorsal fin to the trade before he could escape. He was found on a beach in Indonesia and emergency lifted to a mer clinic in the capital of Jakarta. His best friends are Sam and Larray.

Sam -

Species: nurse shark

Size: 10 feet, on the larger end of this species

Behaviour: he's very gentle and kind, does his best to help his fellow mers. Only snapped at a worker once and he felt incredibly bad about it.

Additional info -

Sam was rescued from another facility who treated their mers horribly. Sam was found in a tiny indoor tank with 4 other mers, the tank had been infested with algae which caused an infection in his eyes. He was rendered blind from the infection, corneas scarred and clouded. He can see light but no discernable shapes, he recently received a sea lion called fran who was trained to help him around like a guide dog. His best friends are George and Larray.

Larray -

Species: common bottlenose dolphin

Size: 9 feet

Behaviour: nervous and shy when first transferred, he'd been neglected a bullied by his pod in the wild, so he has some heavy trauma associated with other dolphins. He become much more playful and friendly after therapy and befriending Sam and George, he now calls them his pod.

Additional info:

He can't be released due to his trauma with other dolphins, he's a social creature who relies on his pod for safety. Without one he's a sitting duck.

Bbh - (still developing his character)

Species: zebra seahorse

Size: 7cm tall

Behaviour: easy to get along with, smart with jokes, amazing foster parent too.

Additional info:

Bbh was found as a small child struggling against the current, he'd somehow become detached from the coral reef he was living on. He was presented to multiple foster mers but none of them accepted him, after multiple rejections Bad needed to be hand fostered. This makes it very unlikely for mers to be released due to reduced awareness of humans so it's an absolute last resort. He was fostered by Skeppy, a volunteer foster.

The humans

Technoblade -

Job: mer psychologist

Appearance:

6'2 with pink mid- back length hair that is tied into a bun for work. He has a round face with tired but perceptive eyes framed with square, thin wire glasses. He dresses professional constantly and keeps in shape but not overly gym bro.

Additional info:

His interest in mers started when he was a child, around 6, when a beluga mer hissed at him for walking too close. He then went on to get his masters in mer psychology and he's playing with the idea of a doctorate in mer ethology (the study of behaviour). If you were to ask him why he chose psychology he would tell you "the best way to understand a mer is to know how their brains work". He becomes George's therapist after his intern work lands him the job.

Jordan - (a friend's oc)

Job: Small mers handler

Appearance:

Shes 5'10, mixed, has 3b curly hair, Sleeper build- she works out but you couldn't tell under her uniform.

Glasses, sometimes wears a beanie that's lined with satin to no damage their hair hehe

Additional info:

Jordans job is to take care of the small mers, such as the colony mers by taking them to medical, feeding them, spot cleaning the tanks, administering medication tho those prescribed it and much more. She loves her job and has been offered promotions previously but she turned them down for more time with the mers.

Skeppy -

Job: volunteer fosterer

Appearance:

5'8 with short black hair that he keeps gelled and styled. For work he wears a volunteer uniform which is really just a t-shirt with 'volunteer foster' embroidered on the front.

Additional info: he gets pizza from one specific pizza place near the sanctuary for every lunch break.

The importance of hair

Small tw for talks or death and mourning practices

Hair is very subjective in mer culture.

Mers that reside in mangroves or other crowded waters tend to keep their hair short to avoide it tangling on roots and branches, in the open ocean they have a little more freedom with long hair but still tend to keep it tied away so predator mers can't grab at it during a chase. River mers are in a similar boat to mangrove mers, there are lots of things for hair to get tangled on so it's kept short but in some places like the lochs of Scotland their hair is beautifully long - sometimes longer than their bodies.

Hair is also important in mourning, if possible the family and/ or mate of the deceased mer would cut a lock of hair and braid it into their own or keep it in an empty shell if their hair is too short to weave.

What human foods, if any, can the mers eat? Do any of the mers have a favorite human food that the caretakers will sometimes sneak in to give them?

They can eat most human foods but can't have things animals like dogs and cats also can't have such ad avocado, onions and chocolate. The sanctuary buy from organic wholesalers as pesticides used on commercial farms aren't good for the mers or the water
