i love it when i email my university to say hey you're paying me for this summer when are you. doing that and they email me back three business days later to say well you theoretically got paid yesterday except we're moving to a new system so you probably didn't get paid. we don't know when it'll happen. check back in a week i guess

a thing I believe (and it's a silly thing, to be clear, but I do believe it) is that everyone has at least one extremely mundane superpower (for example, my spouse's is that they have never looked bad in a single pair of sunglasses ever, regardless of how ridiculous the sunglasses are) and I am beginning to suspect that mine is the ability to thrift occasion-based clothing in an extremely compressed time period before an event

I know they say “stop and smells the roses” as a cliche and a metaphor, but I cannot emphasize enough that in this bloom-laden month of May, as you walk down the sidewalk, unless you are actively racing to catch public transit, you should keep an eye out for beautiful flowers and pause to smell them. Especially roses. Those things are so pretty and they often smell so good.

I think the most revelatory thing from this first year of grad school has been thinking of absolutely everything as a work-in-progress. like, it's not like you write a seminar paper and then it's done and you're finished with it and you never think about it again; my professors are constantly giving me feedback that is tailored to the idea of "this is the start of something, and if you want to develop it further, here's where you might go." it's genuinely changed the way I think about my academic work in a way which seems extremely obvious and simple but has in fact done wonders for the way I think about the things I'm producing. everything has, or could have, an afterlife! the goalpost you are told is the "final" stage of something is in fact a very beginning in many cases! how extremely cool is that!

feeling very fortunate and very lucky to have summer funding but also why the fuck is my summer funding only $6k for three months. I sort of can pay my bills on this but only sort of. like. I do also have a non-zero gap between actual and required income which I am hoping I can turn up some kind of side hustle to fill but. ugh.
