It’s Presidents Day!

More details below
Disney really wanted to incorporate the Presidents into Disneyland. The first real attempt came with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln where the imagineers created their most advanced animatronic. Mr. Lincoln was likely chosen to be first because he was a personal hero of Walt’s. The show had him moving and reciting Lincoln’s own words. This served as the starting point for the Hall of Presidents. Great Moments would run for 50 before taking a short break from the park.
Nixon is a Cali native and thus Disneyland would be a natural attraction. He (with his family) received a key to the park in ‘55. As VP he also opened many additions including the Monorail where the secret service were accidentally left behind on the platform! There are many letters between him and the company, including invitations to appear on the Mickey Mouse Club. He still holds the highest number of visits to the park of any other President (including the other Cali-boy & certified movie star, Reagan)
This fact is taken from a letter the First Lady wrote on 1934. Walt and the first couple would also meet a few other times including for the opening of the MET and when she visited the studios. The administration also used Disney for a lot of propaganda work during the water (which helped keep the studio in business).
Roy was approached about the gig by campaign aide Jacqueline Cochran before Walt. Given the union contracts, all work on the 60 second ad was off company time and done voluntarily (including for no pay). It ended up being a critical component to Eisenhower’s win.
The Hall of Presidents was first opened in 1971 with noted past Presidents speaking. It was renovated in September of 93 and Clinton was asked to record the oath of office and give a few remarks for the new show. Bush 43, Obama, and Trump did the same. Biden only recorded the oath.
Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration was so cold it had to be moved indoors and much fanfare was canceled. So a delayed parade was organized for warmer weather in a warmer climate! It is also one of few inaugural events ever held outside the capital.
First Lady Rosalyn Carter went to see the Hall of Presidents show and was shocked by the terrible suit her husband’s animatronic was in. She decided to donate a new, more proper, suit for him to wear.
Presidents seem to enjoy the bestowing the Medal of Freedom part of their job. One reason for the honor was that Walt had “created an American folklore.”
In January of ‘12, Obama went to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom to announce plans to increase the ease of international tourism into the country. It is one of the country’s biggest moneymakers and would also lead to immediate growth in jobs/the economy. The parks “represent the quintessentially American spirit” making them the ideal setting.
From 1971 until 1993, Washington, John Adams, Jefferson, Jackson, and Van Buren had speaking parts along side Lincoln’s. The Clinton change cut the five early Presidents from the show. However, when Obama updated the program, Washington was brought back to stay. Secondary fun fact: the narrator for the program also tends to change between administrations. Notably: Maya Angelou narrated the Clinton version and Morgan Freeman the Obama one. (The current administration update has yet to be revealed)
Disney properties have been used for many speeches and political events. The most notorious is probably when Nixon went to the Contemporary Resort to try and control the narrative about Watergate in ‘73. It was not a good speech to give for many reasons. Less than a year later he resigned over the very issue.
