ig i better elaborate on what i meant by this title bc i have thoughts. i was gonna do an illustrated explanation like with my last worldbuildingy post but i dont wanna. so im just gonna Yap

OKAY so i was having Path/ologic brainrot a while back and lingering on the idea of Mistresses - and how they are able to exist and be glorified in conjunction with a culture of Witchburning. And then something clicked in my head for the direction I wanted to go in with magic users n such in my silly little setting.

Anyway yeah.

I've decided that for my thing, Magical People are kinda arbitrarily split into Witches (the majority of them that we villainise and revile) and Adorators/Adoratrices (the idolised few that we Like and Keep Around and Rely On) - with a sense that the latter can also a bit of a precarious position in a lot of cases. Public perception changes on a dime, after all.

Originally the title of Adorator/Adoratrice was connected only to the church, but now it's kind of become a broader title for any magical bitch that's become sort of a pillar of the community/that we've just decided is. Allowed and Not in league with the devil or whatever. So while there's a religious connotation, they aren't all connected to the nightmare shitshow cult. (An Adorator or Adoratrice's magics will regardless likely be Considered to be divine in origin though I think...)

Those with The Gift can practice multiple sorts of magic, with skill level and range varying a lot from person to person. Adorators and Adoratrices often tend to lean into a Theme, but that's more for PR and Branding reasons than anything else. Certain types of magic are also inherently more demonised - and thus tend to be avoided unless there's a real specific gift in that area.

Also for fun context, I was struggling a lot to find a word to use for this role - and ended up landing on this when I saw the word Adoratrice in the wild, which apparently historically referred to a role akin to like. A Priestess that is also sort of Quasi-Royalty. And I was fond of how that connection leans into the fairytale feel. what is an adoratrice here if not a magical fairytale princess :)))

Also now that I am no longer constrained by trying to shove my fellas into an existing setting, I can feel more Freedom when it comes to characters that already had magical shit going on before i shoved them into dol <3

Usisng her as an example I've always imagined Lettie as having a kind of dualistic Blood/Earth and Dream/Mindmagics theming going on. But to come across better and better assure her own survival, tends to dress herself up as a Miracle Worker Herbalist Clairvoyant. They love that shit. Only a few trusted people need to know the Specifics of how anything she does actually Works. (I've been a bit undecided for a While now on if she is actually capable of clairvoyance... I like the flavour of it and it fits the Dream theming well, but also it's a little hard to make work with the amount of stuff that happens to her that just works best if she doesn't quite expect it???? it's something to Consider)

for her specific title i might go for something like the Blooming Adoratrice to reference her spawning from the earth and all that.

Valentine uh... Valentine's kind of washed up... I think he's sort of burnt out a lot of his capabilities at this point. Still somehow the likely heir for the High Adorator title though.

As an aside, I've been considering making Clara witchpilled too <3 It adds to their fun duality together. and also. it just suits her.

I think she's Studying under a older witch that leans quite heavily into the Wicked Isolated Witch That Turns People Into Animals image (y'know. To keep her dehumanisation theming intact.)

Art is a sport

One common thing I see among artists who are just starting out is that they are very precious about their work -- ironically, way moreso than experienced artists. They need to get every line JUST right, because in their mind, getting that line just right is what stands between the piece being bad and it being good. I was like that too, for so long that I'm still struggling to catch up because of how it hampered my progress.

Being precious about every line is kind of like a track sprinter starting a run, but then restarting every time their foot lands in any slightly suboptimal way. This is comes off as silly, because we know that the "unit" of what they are doing is a sprint, and that they would make their greatest progress by finishing the full sprints, because that's how they train.

Well, similarly, the "unit" of art is a finished piece. What stands between the sprinter and the time they want isn't 1 individual step, but 1000 sprints. What stands between the beginner artist and making art they like the look of isn't that 1 line, but, i'm sorry to say, 1000 pieces.

Taking note of any mistakes you made afterwards is something done by both the experienced artist and experienced sprinter -- this is healthy and helps you improve. But you can do that later, after you're done.

That line is good enough.

You’re messing around with some married guy that’s twice your age. So what? You weren’t seduced by him- it was the money. Right. You wanted the money.

Those hands holding onto your waist that made you feel so fragile didn’t mean anything. That stupid flutter in your insides when he’s the first face you see when looking up as you stand soaked in rain was just a coincidence. Those long nights at a hotel drinking both of your problems away with a good laugh, both of your phones on do not disturb when he comes closer to give you those passionate kisses. Nothing.

He told you that before you were allowed to step into his home after your longtime friend invited you over. Both of you were standing stun locked when the sunny ginger shouted a cheery ‘hi dad!’, not even noticing the drop in atmosphere as he walked past and began to speak about his day like normal. Avery had a shimmer of fiery anger hidden in a vein as he gave you a threatening gaze while dumping info on you as he pretends to show you where to sit your shoes as you already knew. The only thing that was new was the homey family made atmosphere instead of the usual cut and dry sleek interior.

This is the first time he’s looked…panicked. He knows he’s caught up by an unlucky acquaintance. He just so happened to start an affair with the childhood friend of a kid he adopted ten years ago. How fucking lucky is he. He takes a deep breath; introducing you to his wife and makes sure to not act on instinct with his usual possessive grips.

His wife has the audacity to be a sweetheart. Made you seem like the bitter hag in comparison as your eyes narrow at her every time her eyes close with that beautiful smile. Why? It’s an irritating feeling of jealousy and a shameful pride that follows it when you realize that you could ruin her life right here if you wanted to. That face would look rotten with grief if you told her how much Avery splurges on you every week, if you explained that the asshole standing beside you and not her let’s you sit on it before and after school.

But, you give a small smile instead. You’re well trained by Avery; much more restrained by the side you’re shown when you’re around. He smiles so brightly like her and it’s so annoying how hard it is to tell what’s real. Sadly, you know what is real. That diamond on her finger is one of the same kinds that you see in when you’re shopping with Avery. Those pictures on the wall that were far easier to ignore when your head is buried in Avery’s crotch. Your friend obviously has love for his adoptive mother and father, you feel angry that you can finally put faces to the experiences he shared with you.

He’s just some married guy. Why’re you so angry?

For 🪶, they have the Same laugh! How cute. Valentine's is just a little deeper because he's older and hasn't. Y'know. Done voice training and estrogen to feminize his voice. Cisman Moment.

Specifically, I think they're both prone to a giggle or a chuckle. In Lettie's case, the former is much more common, even if not always wholly sincere (I will have to think on how one can tell the difference between her faked giggles and her real ones) , while her chuckles tend to be more at things she Inwardly finds privately funny. Untold jokes at other peoples' expense, or things that she just otherwise can't say out loud.

Valentine tends to chuckle more because APPARENTLY, society isn't ready for men giggling yet. :/ So him giggling has a real ominous edge to it, I think. It's usually either bitter or cruel in nature... Meanwhile the chuckle has more of a sense of Feigned Warmth to it. Like he's, uh... Humouring someone.

Aaaaaand for ⛓️...

Lettie tends to sit with her guilt. For some reason or another, she seems to be constantly steeping in it, or perhaps holding it close to her chest like a cherished memento. It just seems to have been baked into her worldview and her view of herself. When things happen to her, she probably did something wrong to deserve or bring that on herself. She's a fraud as WELL as a defrauder, so that bodes terribly. When people are upset, that's probably her fault too somehow. (So she may as well enjoy upsetting people a bit on purpose now and then...) Even being disabled surely counts as something to feel guilty for. I guess for her, guilt is just a fact of life. She tries not to linger on it too much, but she really doesn't like herself all that much, save for what she views as a few redeeming qualities she needs to depend on. Sometimes it sneaks up on her when she's alone, though.

Valentine is kind of the opposite? If he feels guilty, no he doesn't. He's had enough guilt, it's someone else's fault now, or it just wasn't all that bad to begin with. (Usually Lettie's.) It makes him terribly uncomfortable to actually sit with such feelings, so... Yeah. Turn it off! Like a lightswitch... So I guess ultimately, he very quickly goes into this avoidant self-soothing mode. If deflecting it fails, there's always his secret stash of fancy alcohol.
