My art for the DBDa charity calendar by @deadboyagency
It was an honor to work with some of the most talented people in the fandom (75 artists, who would have thought?).
I also worked on the design of the quote from the show, which you can find on the calendar pages ❤️
Tumblr media
This is the most talented fandom I know and I'm proud to have been a part of something so important. I have never been a part of anything so big in my life and will always be proud that I did it.
There is something incredible about not just admiring your favorite artists in the fandom, but working side by side with them and creating such cool fandom merch.
You can get your copy of the calendar now and all the information can be found on the @deadboyagency acc ❤️
And tysm @alltimefail for everything ❤️

While both are certainly true, the majority have picked the incorrect answer!
Please consider that Edwin does literally everything Charles asks him to do, even if he really does not want to. The entire first episode is a case study in just how wrapped around Charles’ finger he is.
Mr. “It’s why we try not to involve the living” Rowland was like “let’s bring a random girl to our office” and Edwin doesn’t even argue with him until she’s already been sleeping there presumably all night. He’s like, “we don’t interact with the living and Death has been here” and Charles was like, “y’all hear somethin’?” and Edwin was like, “I’m incredibly uncomfortable with this” and he was like, “adjust your really poor attitude” despite his safe space being invaded by a stranger that his best friend has already seemed to develop a crush on. Charles is like, “she’s gonna stay btw” and again, Edwin doesn’t even argue with him. Then Crystal’s like, “we need to go to America and save a little girl because I saw a vision in this flyer” and Edwin is like, “that is not enough information to go to another fucking continent for no actual client” and Charles is like, “nah remember how you were worried about Death? let’s go!” And Edwin just sighs!
Edwin may bitch and moan about things, but he never actually denies Charles what he wants, even when he’s a perfectly valid position to do so. On the flip side, I don’t think Edwin ever even asks Charles to do anything he’s uncomfortable with doing.

Totally saying this because of a text post edit I saw and reblogged, but Charles would absolutely love light-up sneakers and I need fanart of it; bonus points if they’re Twinkle Toes that he didn’t realize were intended to girls

Have you spotted the Dead Boy Detectives best of lists we've been sharing lately? 💀🔎
Tumblr media
DBDA has appeared on an incredible 118 best-of lists from sites around the internet since it debuted, with more of them popping up in just the last few months! Passing them around is a great way to show people who haven't seen the series how well-regarded it is, especially when it's compared favorably to a show they might already love. If you see them floating around, please take the time to reblog. You might just help someone find their new favorite show!

Happy Pride!! 🏳️‍🌈 It felt like the right time to finally draw the Dead Boy Detectives, which was long overdue considering I've been basically watching the show on repeat since it came out. Now to draw the Cat King....

nah, charles would absolutely still call him "mate" and edwin would totally be fine with it. i think that he'd add other pet names, like "love", but he'd always still say "mate"!
i may be in the minority but i don’t think edwin would mind being called “mate” even in a relationship. one because the word seems to be less like strictly platonic and more like, friendly, imo? and two bc he likes being charles’s friend and thinks it’s an honor

just re-watched the ending of episode 4 and now i'm thinking about how hard it must have been on edwin in port townsend where he and charles literally parted ways at the end of their days when that's probably something they never did for thirty years. and i say it must have been hard on edwin rather than charles since, you know, he's the one who started it.
i'd really love to see charles grapple with the fact that he was indirectly pushing edwin away during that time, not just on an emotional level but on a basic level. like he looks so hurt/bothered by edwin talking to monty, but he's the one who started becoming buddy-buddy with crystal first. i want to see him realize that he was the one distancing himself from edwin, not the other way around.

Well, now I need to know if Charles forced him to celebrate more after they became friends! I imagine he did, at least made him wear a party hat or something 🤩
I asked George Rexstrew how he thinks Edwin celebrated his sixteenth birthday, this is what he said.
Sorry about the editing, didn't want to send the whole video but I'm basically vibrating rn omg

SANDERS SIDES AND DEAD BOY DETECTIVES!! LET’S GO!
Niko: We’re like a big happy family! And I’m the dad and Crystals the mom.
Crystal: Why am I the mom? What gender rolls are we pushing here?
Monty: I know they’re probably thinking I’m like the son, but I’m not! I’ll be the gay emo cousin.
Charles: I will be the son! The hot shot! Whose only dream… is to be a star.
Jenny: I feel like I’d be a… fresh out of jail uncle.
Edwin: And I’m the sassy aunt. Who talks shit about everybody.

Read below on Tumblr here!
The slim box Edwin hands Charles is pristinely wrapped in shimmering silver paper with glittery stars. It’s topped off with a matching silver ribbon that has been carefully knotted into a perfect bow. Charles stares at it for a moment, feeling like he shouldn’t even be holding such a beautiful present let alone ripping it open.
But Edwin’s pressing his fists together, eyes flitting between his face and the box expectantly. He looks a combination of anxious and eager. “Is something wrong?”
“Nah, of course not, mate,” Charles says with a laugh. He shakes his head. “It’s just so pretty. I feel bad opening it.”
“It is intended to be opened, Charles,” the other boy replies, an edge of impatience in his tone. Charles smirks at the opportunity to tease him.
“Yeah, but look at how smooth the paper is!”
“Yes.”
“And how perfect the folds are!”
“Yes, Charles. I am aware.”
“And the big bow!”
“Charles!”
Edwin’s exasperated voice makes Charles’ grin grow even bigger. But he also reaches up to gently tug said bow loose. He lays the untied ribbon gently on the desk, noticing a breath catch in his friend’s throat.
It makes him hesitate as he poises his fingers to make the first tear. What could possibly be in this box to make Edwin so… apprehensive, yet excited for Charles to see?
Charles pries up one of the folds and pulls. It makes a big clean rip in the paper that allows him to tug the box free with ease. He tosses the paper to the floor to be cleaned up later, his eyes focused on the polished black container he is now holding. It has a silver clasp in the center and a hinge along the opposite side. Charles’ eyes widen as he takes it in. This is no gift box. It’s clear that it is a case for whatever is inside.
“Mate, what- you didn’t need to get me something this fancy,” he finds himself saying as his fingers toy with the latch. “My present for you wasn’t this nice.”
“You don’t even know what it is yet,” Edwin points out. He’s pressing his fists together a little harder now. “I am very appreciative and happy with what you got me. You need not worry about that. Besides, the box was a minimal commission. The actual gift deserved a proper container.”
“Hold up, wait a tick,” Charles says. His eyebrows raise as his eyes widen. “You got the box commissioned? What does that-”
“Charles, please just open it.”
With a deep breath, he flips open the latch and slowly raises the lid. Charles isn’t sure what he was expecting, but nothing could’ve prepared him for what he’s looking at.
It is a cylinder of beautifully polished wood with shiny metal embellishments. It is surprisingly light as he lifts it carefully out of the box, but it feels at home gripped in his hand. There are symbols carved into the wood that look crystalline underneath. Even with his limited knowledge of the arcane, Charles recognizes runes when he sees them. He tilts it to look down the center, eyes widening further as he sees a glass lens covering what looks to be the hollow interior of the object. He is right about the crystal-like texture; looking down the center, he can see a gemstone of some kind with a shimmer that radiates magic. There is a small button on the side, placed perfectly where his thumb lands when he holds it the way he does his cricket bat.
It’s gorgeous. Charles has no idea what it is. “Um…”
“It’s alright if you don’t recognize it,” Edwin rushes out. “I could hardly make an exact replica. It will probably become obvious when you turn it on. Just be sure not to point it at either of us when you do. Although,” he pauses, head tilting as he considers the object, “we are both ghosts, so hypothetically it shouldn’t hurt us. But it is magic… I should’ve conducted more tests before gifting it you. I apologize.”
Charles isn’t sure what to say in response. “It’s fine, mate,” is what he settles on. He holds it out in front of himself pointing straight up, then presses the button.
*shink*
A light erupts from the object bright enough that Charles instinctively closes his eyes and turns his head away. But after a beat, he cracks one eye open to look. The other quickly follows as his jaw drops.
He knows what this is.
Edwin clears his throat, fidgeting with his sleeves. “I recalled that you mentioned a trilogy of films you saw when you were younger,” he starts. Charles turns his wide-eyed gaze onto his best friend. “Upon doing a bit of refreshing research, I realized that Return of the Jedi came out in 1983. This year marks its tenth anniversary.”
“It gave me an idea,” Edwin says, nodding to the object in Charles’ hand. “It took quite a bit of research, careful craftsmanship, arcane casting, and several attempts, but I managed to create a magical saber that utilizes a combination of runes, an enchanted crystal, and a specialized lens to create a blade composed of light like those seen in the films you enjoy.”
Charles stays silent for a second, staring at his favorite person in the world in complete awe.
“…You made me a lightsaber.”
Despite being a ghost with no real circulatory system, a light pink blush appears on Edwin’s face as he looks down at the floorboards. “Well, no, not really. It’s a magical tool loosely based on-”
“You made me a fucking lightsaber.”
The flush in his cheeks gets darker at the tone of his voice. Charles’ grin is so wide he knows his cheeks would hurt if he were still alive. He gives the pure white beam another once over before clicking it off. Edwin looks confused, but Charles doesn’t hesitate as he throws his arms around his best friend.
Hugs are not something they do often. Edwin’s disdain for prolonged touch makes them an infrequent luxury that Charles cherishes when he is willing to indulge him. That being said, there are some instances where he simply can’t stop himself from engulfing his partner into a bone-crushing hug; that is, if they had bones. While ghosts can’t feel the living or the mortal plane around them, they are at least privileged enough to be able to feel each other.
And Charles makes sure that Edwin can feel just how tightly he’s holding him. He tucks his nose into his neck. He loops his arms around so that they overlap with how close he pulls Edwin. Even though he initially goes stiff, Charles squeezes him like they could fuse into one ghost.
The shock wears off after a moment, and Edwin’s hands find their way onto Charles’ shoulder blades as he returns the embrace. Charles feels like he could cry with how much affection he feels for this boy.
He laughs breathlessly as he nuzzles even closer. “I love you.”
He feels Edwin gasp as much as hears it. For a moment, he’s not sure why, then it hits him. They’ve never used that phrase with each other before.
Two teenaged boys who come from eras where affection between males was practically unheard of and societally frowned upon. Love was not something either of them has experience expressing. They’ve never discussed the details, but Charles knows neither of them had loving fathers. Edwin is from a time where affection between married couples was considered indecent.
Now that he thinks about it, Charles can’t remember the last time he’s said those words towards anyone other than his mother; that was half a decade ago. He certainly has never said it to another boy his own age.
But he also realizes just how much he means it. It flows through his being like honey. The amount of joy he feels is unparalleled.
Except Charles remembers who he’s with. While he hopes, believes, that Edwin returns the sentiment, he knows how difficult his friend can find emotions. As much as he doesn’t want to, he moves his arms and takes a step back, keeping his free hand on Edwin’s shoulder but giving him more room. “Uh- I mean…”
The sentence dies on his tongue. Charles can’t take it back. He doesn’t want to take it back. He doesn’t want to apologize for loving his best mate either, but the wide eyes on his face are making him more nervous by the second.
“I’m- You don’t have to say it back, obviously,” Charles says emphatically. “It’s just… It’s true. I love you, mate. And I’m not going to say sorry for that, but I am sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable.”
“No, I’m not… uncomfortable,” Edwin replies. He looks down at the floor as he swallows. “Just a little surprised I suppose. I’ve not heard someone say that in nearly a century. I hope you know that I feel the same way, even if I struggle to actually… say it.”
Charles looks at the homemade lightsaber in his other hand and finds himself laughing. “Edwin, you could never say it, and I would still know. It would never bother me,” he says. His friend looks lost, eyebrows furrowing, so Charles nods to the gift. “This is more than enough proof. No one has ever, and I mean ever, given me something this special.”
He takes a step back from their embrace so he can turn the saber back on. He swishes it back and forth a tiny bit, grinning wildly as it creates a warbled noise. While the sound isn’t the same as in the films, it’s close; it’s familiar but unique, and Charles is obsessed with it.
Edwin is watching him with wide eyes, the beam of light reflecting in his green irises. There is an emotion twinkling in them that Charles can’t place, but his lips curl into a small smile. It is a soft one, the kind that he only lets Charles see, and it turns his stomach to mush whenever he sees it.
“Well, I’m glad you like your gift,” Edwin says, dipping his head a little. “Merry Christmas, Charles.”
