Afghanistan - Stay together for the children?
“No Matter The Timing, Withdrawing From Afghanistan Was Wrong ” – that’s the headline. I suppose that is a point of view we have to address because there are reasons to have stayed. At this point I still suspect we will go back. But, time will tell on that front. I am assuming that “no matter” in this headline is hyperbole. If taken on face value the only option would be to make Afghanistan a US…

Practical Stoicism
I am not a true stoic. I am a modern stoic. I came to that long before I knew what stoicism was. Let me explain how that happened.
I am not a true stoic. I am a modern stoic. I came to that long before I knew what stoicism was. Let me explain how that happened. I frequently use the phrase, “it is, what it is” which is a very stoic phrase. It is a phrase of acceptance. My mind came to that way of thought from the Serenity Prayer. It is most frequently employed by those in Alcoholics Anonymous. A plaque, similar to the one…

A Climate Apology - Too Little - Too Late
I don’t think any single person has the right to apologize on behalf of environmentalists any more than I think a consensus of scientists saying something means they must be right and “sciency”. However, it is nice to hear. It is nice to hear someone acknowledge that fear has been the propaganda of environmentalism. We hear it in an article titled, “On Behalf Of Environmentalists, I Apologize For…

What's with the rise in autism rates?
What's with the rise in autism rates? In this blog post I ponder autism, it's rise, possible cause, possible solution, and Mr. Rogers.
The below musings were inspired by this article: Changes in gut microbiome play a role in autism development, study reveals (studyfinds.org) What causes autism? I don’t think there is a single cause of autism. I don’t think we are really talking about a single thing. What we call autism, I believe, is the presentation of symptoms rather than the disease itself. This isn’t unique or new. Really,…

Episode 64 - Cultural Appropriation - So, So, Good!
Actually, Jackass, it is reasonable to believe that people have been sharing their cultures from the very beginning. As long as there have been humans those humans have been sharing ideas. Ogg and the chieftain Kroup’!tun met around a camp fire and told stories, shared food, and exchanged a slightly better way to sharpen a stick. Ogg left with a necklace and a flint. Though I tell that as a trite…

Lying Liars Lie - The worst kind of lies and Cuomo - #510
“People value the truth,” said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo during an interview on MSNBC. “Incompetent government kills people. More people died than needed to die in COVID.” Cuomo said this before revelations came out that he hid information from the department of justice. You and I hear this and we are shocked. Fantastically shocked. I shouldn’t be shocked of course. As Orwell put it, “Political…

But they sell Hitler! and other comments on bans - #509
Time and time again I see this point being made. You can’t get Dr. Seuss, but you can get Hitler! Yes. So? The reason I say that is because the answer to “so?” seems to be that they should ban those books too, or in some cases if they allow those they should allow Dr. Seuss. My personal thinking is simple, they have the right to decide what to sell and consumers have the right to be upset about…

Reparations are Racist and Wrong - Post#508
Reparations are Racist and Wrong - Post#508 - The people asking for reparations never were slaves. The people being asked to pay never owned slaves.  That really should be the end of this conversation among rational people. Your great great great grandfather enslaved my great great great grandfather so you should pay me money. Why doesn't that get a collective, "uh, no"?
This is a tactic of the political class that we should always pay attention to. They say things that pretty well everyone can agree to but leave off the solutions they propose because they know that people won’t agree on those. We aren’t as divided in the country as people thing. We agree on most things. It’s what to do about those things that causes contention. Let’s break down a little from…

Capitalism and the "failed" business - Post#507
Capitalism and the "failed" business - Post#507. Fry's Electronics is closing. It represents a particular kind of store but does it represent a failed business? I ponder this out loud on the blog.
Funky electronics chain Fry’s is no more | The Seattle Times Even as a young platypus I was into electronics. I used to take things apart and solder them back in different formats. When Fry’s Electronics opened up it was my Mecca. I loved going in and picking a case, a motherboard, a processor, graphics card, hard drive, etc. Putting together your own system was the way to do it. I could afford…

Episode 63 - Ted Cruz: The Great Escape
Episode 63 - Ted Cruz: The Great Escape.
Ted Cruz ran away, fled the country, skipped town. If only he would have stayed he could have melted the ice or spun the turbines with his mighty breath! From both left and right I have read stories assailing Ted Cruz. Some say he “fled” to Cancun, some that he “escaped”. One even said he “abandoned” them. As if he could have taken the entire state of Texas with him! Now some squinty-eyed prig at…

Episode 62 - Texas Freeze
Texas done froze over! Climate change is real but it doesn't mean what you think it means and the right thing to do about it isn't what you think!
Dotty says, “Texas done froze over! Climate change is real but it doesn’t mean what you think it means and the right thing to do about it isn’t what you think!”

Episode 61 - Rush Limbaugh Rest in Peace
Episode 61 - Rush Limbaugh Rest in Peace.
Rush Limbaugh has passed away. For those who listen to Rush Limbaugh this announcement was expected. He had lung cancer. There are many on the left raising a glass to toast his death I am sure. He was always misunderstood by his critics. They obviously didn’t listen to the show but only to the sound bites they were given. I have listened to Rush Limbaugh for a while now. Long enough to know the…

The Minimum Wage is Bad. Bad I tell you! Bad.
The Minimum Wage is Bad. Bad I tell you! Bad. People want to do well. It is understandable that they would want government to ensure they get a good wage. People, you and I, want others to do well. It makes sense, that those who don't need the minimum wage, might still support it for the benefit of others. The idea breaks down quickly though if one ponders it honestly. If $15 is good, why not $20 or even $50? Eventually people will tell you that the number is just too high.

Episode 59 - Black History Month Racism Run Amok
Episode 59 - Black History Month Racism Run Amok - It seems no matter where I look I see people telling me to pay attention to race and skin color. They want me to watch shows from a certain skin color and even buy from certain vendors because they have a certain skin color. I have been taught my entire life that this was racism but people are acting like it isn't. They are wrong.

Episode 58 - Unmasked Bandit - Dottie Penguin Comments
PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) — A maskless man was denied service at a Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles – so he returned with a gun, authorities say. Looks like a fellow in Pasadena, California wanted some chicken and waffles and the store wouldn’t give him any because he wasn’t wearing a mask. Dottie has commentary.

Gender Issues and the Modern Adolescent
Gender Issues and the Modern Adolescent is a phenomenon we are seeing more and more of now. I think it is because for many youth it is now part of the natural stage of rebellion and identity. While it certainly is gender dysphoria for some, the majority, in my opinion, do not fall into that category at all. But in either case I am not sure the current approach is the right one. While we are at it, please head over to MeWe and follow us there. FB has overstepped too many times. https://mewe.com/p/thegovernmentisaplatypus
I have spent the last week exploring Tik Tok. For those of you unfamiliar it is a short-form video platform. Mostly, those making the videos are young people or old people trying to reach a young audience. What I found was video after video of kids (meaning under 18) exploring a few basic topics that all boil down to identity. At that age identity becomes very important to youth. We all have a…
