April 2021

April this year has been a very different one compared to last year. This time last year I was putting beds in, creating growing areas, erecting boundary fences and watching all my seedling flourish in the greenhouse. March 2021

There were small signs throughout the month of March, that spring was heading our way. The temperature was warming up and the water butts were full of rainwater. My cold frame is fit to burst. Next week's weather should help bring some of these seedlings along. #peas are poking their heads up, #beetroot and #cauliflower are sprouting g along with #lettuce and #broccoli. All the #strawberrries are ready to go into hanging baskets, one #raspberrycane is ready to be planted and some companion plants cuttings are ready to go out. . This years garlic is growing much better than last years. Last year I put my into the ground, which at the time was not free draining and didn't have alot of nutrients. This year, after talking to a gardening friend of mine, I followed his recommendation and planted them in my trough which had fresh, free draining soil. This looks like it has done the trick, as the stems are thick and the tops are healthy and tall. . I went for a soft neck 'rose wight' variety. I started these #broadbeans from #seeds sown in Oct 2020. They were planted out late Feb and have been doing really well. I haven't grown these before but in our house we love broadbean risotto with charred peppers and drizzle of soy sauce, so I thought I'd given them a go. Plus if I have a glut of them they freeze really well. . My mum told me that my Grandpop loved growing these and their flower's scent is stunning. Last year I planted up the strawberry runners and they are looking really healthy. I have brought hanging baskets for these to be planted out into. . The raspberry cane has sprouted new growth so we should be able to plant it out soon for some autumn raspberries. . #spinach #broccoli and #beetroot seedlings are growing nicely too. Only one pea has sprouted but I have more growing in root trainers. Sunday session at The PATCH. The sun was shinning and it was a g tree at day to be at the allotment. . Cleared out raspberry canes from last season, removed cabbages that had gone to seed and covered the left hand side with cardboard to kill the weeds off. Also got the strimmer out to clear the pathways. . Im in awe of the amount of #rhubarb growing.
