Du Pont’s lead chemist Martin Du Fresne discovered in 1867 a strain of opium that delivered a strong feeling of well-being with a high level of functionality in users, unknowingly unlocking a Pandora’s box of wealth and chaos. When Du Pont Dopium Smokes appeared in drug stores across London, word spread like wildfire and Dopium Smokes were sold out in a matter of hours. That was only the start of London’s Dopium problem. Users became instantly hooked and savagely aggressive when their supply ran out. Du Pont couldn’t generate stock fast enough. Scotland Yard were also coping with a huge surge in overdose deaths. The Yard would have moved to shut down Du Pont’s manufacturing immediately were it not for some very powerful and influential people who had become Dopium smokers. Some 23,000 deaths of commoners occurred while Du Pont was shielded from shut down. The death of Lady Blakeney’s son eventually provided the motivation for banning Dopium Smokes and putting Du Pont permanently out of business. The fact that the lives of thousands of commoners were weighed against one life of an aristocrat and that one life was considered more important was not lost on the bourgeoisie.
