Hi!

It’s been awhile and I am way overdue for an update! In the fall of 2015 I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Motivarti Mentorship. I spent 10 weeks with Mauricio Abril on working on furthering my skills through a project as well as targeting my weaknesses. It was an incredible experience, where I learned a lot about what I need to do to continuously progress. The piece above is from the project I worked on; it’s based on “The Witches” by Roald Dahl. I feel proud of the progress I made with my work and skills during the Motivarti Mentorship as well as excited for my future endeavors.  For more of my work feel free to check out my portfolio. This definitely deserves a reblog and read. Take care of your physical and mental health, your art work will keep getting better and you’ll get where you want. No need to damage yourself in the process.

The “If you’re not drawing 24/7 you aren’t working hard enough.” mentality is garbage.

When I was in college there was this ongoing competitive mindset from the teachers /students that: “If you’re not drawing all night / getting 1 - 2 hours of sleep, you’re going to fall behind.” If you’re an artist you’ve probably met this kind of thinking… I’ve heard it from so many pros / tutorials.

One of my professors said that line all the time. I loved this dude. he worked at Disney on many of my favorite movies, and my young self became absorbed in this mindset. About 3 years into my degree that professor had a stroke, and when he went to the doctor they said he actually previously had something like 10+ strokes without even knowing, brought on by stress, and that he needed to slow down. 

Since then I’ve heard tons of other accounts of sickness and divorce brought on from addiction to work.

A few years later I was listening to an Animation podcast interviewing Glen Keane. He brought up that there were other animators who would live and breathe their work, never going home, barely sleeping, etc. 

What shocked me was that Glen Keane said something like “I ignored this idea, and decided to go home every night to spend time with my family, because I could learn just as much from my life experiences with them.” 

Anyway I just wanted to take a second after hearing a statement like this again recently and let any young artists out there know that:

There’s nothing wrong with investing plenty of time studying and drawing, but also be healthy.

This past week was pretty chaotic but I finally got a chance to relax and plein air paint today :) There is so much I need to learn! I liked how it came out for once and felt compelled to share.

Another study from google in Greece Panagia tou Daskalaki ,Spetses. Was digging it kept going. I am seeing a lot of stuff I want to keep improving on <as always> anywho off to do more work! :)

Hey guys! So I’ve been doing digital studies from googlemaps for the past 6 weeks now. These are not all of them but this is a brief collection of week 1 to 6 at least. The last two are from this past week. I liked how they came out (for the most part).  I’ve also been plein air painting for an hour to 30 minutes a day outside.  Ill post some of those soon! Maybe :X I feel it’s been helping a lot. I am just still in the process of the understanding goache and taking my time to focus on what’s happening with light.
