Vocab dump from first 20 pages of “Al Resguardo del Tilo Rojo” (definitions en español)
I recently did my DELE C1 exam for Spanish, and this is the first books by a native Spanish speaking author I’ve read after my convocatoria. 20 pages in, and I’m having a really good time 📚, publicaré más vocabulario según vaya pasando las páginas 💜

How do the kids do online research
In my experience with my students (8-12 year olds), if given a question like, say, “list five famous Africans and what they are famous for”, they will type verbatim into google “list five famous Africans and what they are famous for”, click on the first youtube video, and if that doesn’t give them the exact answer they need, immediately give up.

Working on my dissertation proposal
I just finished outlining my dissertation chapters for the first draft of my proposal. I’m using this guide to drafting the proposal:

So I’ve been writing my proposal in reverse. I spent like a week making my working bibliography, and another week outlining the chapters. I hope to do my methodology section Monday and have a draft of the proposal done by the end of the week.
So far, this is what I’ve learned:
1. Use a dissertation journal to document your progress and get all your impostor syndrome angst on paper where it can be managed.
2. Use a new document for each new section of the proposal so you aren’t “ruining” your nice document with your drafting. Then you can paste it in where it belongs.
3. Don’t draft in Times New Roman. By now, I’ve associated that font with “serious academic writing” and it makes me nervous. I draft in Arial.
4. Recycle your writing! Sometimes a chunk of writing from your field statement goes very nicely in your proposal.
5. Write something every day you can, even if it’s just a complaint in the dissertation journal.

5 Constructions to Take Your Chinese to the Next Level
As you progress from intermediate to advance, here are 5 patterns/structures that will come up all the time in your Chinese studies! Example sentences are provided.
一无所X:
The meaning of this structure is roughly 没有什么X.
一无所知 yìwúsuŏzhī - not knowing anything at all / completely ignorant Ex: 他坚持说他对这件事一无所知。
一无所求 yìwúsuǒqiú - make no request for anything Ex: 现在我一无所求,曾经用有已经足够。 (From Gameboy by Julia Wu 吴卓源)
一无所有 yìwúsuǒyǒu - not having anything at all / nothing to one’s name / utterly lacking Ex: 他们不得不接受自己已经一无所有的事实。
以X为Y:
This pattern means “taking X as Y.” Ex: 她姐姐以她的儿子为自己的儿子。
Ex: 我们的中国之行以北京为起点。
Ex: 这部电影以孤儿的生活为题材。
It is also used in a lot of common constructions, including the ones below. 以……导向 yǐ…wéi dǎoxiàng - to take X as a guiding principle/direction Ex: 很多大学生在选择专业时以就业市场为导向。
以……为主 yǐ…wéizhǔ - to treat X as most important / to consist mainly of X Ex: 南方人的主食以米饭为主,北方人以面食为主。
以……例 yǐ…wéilì - take X as an example Ex: 以这个病人为例, 这并不是他的死因。

i don’t know why but i’m really amused by the winner of some ‘new kanji’ contest:
compare with the real kanji
座 (seat/gathering), but the two 人 (person) radicals have been moved from next to each other within the 土 (earth) radical to diagonally from each other, making this “social distance(d seating/gathering)”
