Spring into Action with Fun Activities for Your Pooch

Looking for things to do with your pooch as winter thaws?

If you enjoy watching baseball games, take your pooch on a baseball date. Major League Baseball has a "Pups in the Park" option for dog owners! You buy a ticket for yourself and another for your pup and you sit in a designated dog friendly area. Click here for 2017 games with Pup in the Park tickets and tips for the day of the event. Get your exercise on! Maybe your New Years Resolution was to participate in a 5k race. March is a good time to start on that running routine. Your pooch will enjoy the everyday practice and let him exert all that pent up energy compared to the walks he's accustomed to. The training doesn't have to go to waste as there are 5k races that allow you to bring your pup! Click here for a list of dog-friendly runs, their dates, and separated by State/Country.

Hiking or tails - I mean trails! Springtime weather is a great time  to enjoy nature with man's best friend. Look through your State Park's websites and local trails to find out about dog friendly trails. Make sure to train with your pup to make sure you're both physically prepared. Also, bring enough water and a water bowl for your pooch to drink from. Pay close attention to your dog throughout to make sure they are not overexerted. Be safe but have fun!

This month Aurora's mom is happy to show you guys Scrubby Pet No Rinse Bath Mittens. They are a great innovation that makes bath time easier for you AND your pooch. Making your dog stay still long enough to wet him, lather shampoo, scrub, rinse, and then dry him, is a monthly struggle. Just the two words "bath time" can cause Aurora to run in the opposite direction. If you have a messy pup, this can be a weekly struggle!  Scrubby is a great solution. These mittens require a small amount of water and a towel. It's a quick bathing solution that requires 3 easy steps. 1. wet mitten, 2. scrub pup, 3. towel dry. Ways Your Pooch Loves You

As pooch owners, we love our dogs. We make sure they have their basic needs met, we think about them while off at work, we buy them special treats and toys, and give them attention and lots of smooches.

We wonder though....Do they LOVE us back?

Pooches certainly seem to show love to their hoomans. They bounce and wag their tail when we come back after a long day or even a short absence. They cuddle with us while we watch television or when we’re off to bed. They give us smooches back. They’re there when we need them. Whether it’s to protect us when we’re threatened or comfort us when we’re feeling down.

How can we be sure they feel love?

Oxytocin is a chemical seen in humans and often called the “love” chemical. It is the basis of bonding for humans. It is released when we kiss or hug partners, and is also released between a mother and her infant (Psychology Today.)

Dogs have this same chemical and it's specifically released when they smell their owner or gaze into their owner’s eyes (RT News, Science.Mic.) Studies have found that a dog’s emotional maturity is comparable to a human between two to two and a half years old (Psychology Today.) Because of this, the oxytocin released is comparable to that of a mother and her infant.

The bond between a dog and human is a special kind.

Squeak toys are great because when you're pooch starts to get bored, a squeak is all it takes to get him jumping and barking around.  This love-interest is here to stay. It also bounces, despite its unique shape. Feel free to take this heart out for a fun adventure because this toy even floats on water!

Keep Your Pooch Safe Winter Tips!

When winter season comes around, our pooches need to be protected during the cold months. Whether it’s pet care, nutrition or grooming, some adjustments in this time can go a long way.

PET CARE If your dog is an outside dog, make sure they have a dry shelter that is large enough for them to lie down and small enough where they can conserve warmth. On extremely cold days, consider bringing them inside. The weather could lead to deadly conditions (Pet MD.)

When dogs are outside, make sure to cover them well. If it’s too cold outside for you, it is too cold for your dog. Go outside with your dog so you can gauge the weather. Although your dog has fur, it often isn’t enough for the cold weather. Make sure to buy dog sweaters that cover from the base of the tail to the neck and make sure it covers the belly also (Pet MD.)

In the winter months, salt and Antifreeze are used on the streets and sidewalks. Antifreeze has a sweet taste and smell. Therefore, it attracts dogs but is lethal if ingested.  Salt, although not poisonous, can irritate a dog’s paws or mouth. Keep an eye on your dog when outside and taking them out on a walk. Booties protect dogs’ paws and prevent them from licking any Antifreeze or salt later when they are inside (Pet MD.)

NUTRITION

Outside dogs need more food during winter months because they exert more energy to keep warm. Inside dogs, on the other paw, tend to be lazier and therefore conserve energy (Pet MD.) Their diet can remain the same or held back depending on their exercise, activity, and behavior.Water often freezes when left outside, so make sure to change the water if frozen. Use plastic bowls instead of metal bowls to prevent your dog’s tongue from sticking to the bowl.

GROOMING

Dog’s natural oils help keep them warm. Too many baths can strip them of these  oils (ASPCA.) Bathing him less frequently is suggested during cold months. Keeping their hair long can help with warm th, so a dog should never be close shaven (ASPCA.)  After a walk outside, make sure their fur is dry because the transition from the cold outside to the warm inside can cause flaky skin.
