7 Complications of Ankylosing Spondylitis and How To Avoid Them?
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the joints particularly of the lower back in between the spine and pelvis. These joints often become swollen and inflamed with time. This can cause pain and stiffness in the lower back, and eventually, over time, it leads to the fusion of bones in the spine. The disease is much more common in men than in women.   Anyone diagnosed with AS should be well aware of the complications that it can cause to your health. The main symptoms of AS are pain and stiffness in your lower back and buttocks, but this disease can also cause long-term problems in various parts of your body, including your eyes and heart. As this condition progresses, inflammation can contribute to other complications that can affect a person’s life. Some of the major complications are listed below -
Eye problems (inflammation)
As it progresses, the chronic inflammation may occur in the eyes instead of the spine which then causes pain in the eyes. Eyes can also become red or puffy. Eye inflammation which is also named as uveitis can show various symptoms, such as swollen, painful eyes that may be red or enlarged. In some cases, it can also cause blurred and impaired vision, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and severe pain. Wearing dark glasses can help in relieving the symptoms. There are various ayurvedic procedures or therapies that help in reducing eye inflammation. To know more about Uveitis treatment, click here
Reduced flexibility
The damage to the spine and joints caused by chronic inflammation can restrict the movement of the muscles and bones over time. Moreover, the fusion of bones due to AS can cause the bones to become stiff. By practicing regular stretching and exercises can help in making the body more flexible and mobile.
Fatigue
Ankylosing spondylitis is caused by inflammatory markers called cytokines that are present in the body and can be the cause of tiredness. Hence it is one of the common symptoms of AS. This may get worse because the body is using a lot of energy to keep this inflammation aside. Fatigue can also leave a person feeling drained of energy. Regular exercise, or swimming, can also help in relieving fatigue and improve a person’s quality of life.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disorder of bone that makes the bones less dense than normal. This disorder occurs when the body loses too much bone or makes too little bone. The bones, however, become weak and brittle enough and become prone to breakage. This disease can occur in the bones and joints of people with AS, increasing their risk of spinal injury. Certain medications are helpful in treating people with AS and osteoporosis symptoms. Therefore treating AS correctly will help in preventing bone loss.
Gastrointestinal disorders
The inflammation caused by AS may spread to the intestinal tract causing pain in the stomach. It may also lead to various digestive issues. This inflammation in the intestinal tract and bowels can cause troubles like pain and ulcers in the stomach, diarrhea, etc. In some cases of AS, inflammation can also spread from the spine and hips to the intestinal tract. More severe cases may lead to conditions, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Some dietary precautions, regular exercise, and natural medications can help to control inflammation.
Increased risk of heart disease
Inflammation caused by AS can also cause various types of heart problems. Cardiovascular issues that AS contributes include - aortitis, aortic valve disease, conduction problems, ischemic heart disease, and cardiomyopathy. Inflammation in the aorta of the heart can prevent this artery from carrying enough blood to the body. It can also damage the aortic valves or the channel that keeps blood flowing in the body through the heart. There are various medications and exercises to help control inflammation in the aorta.
Cauda equina syndrome
This is the rare complication caused by the Ankylosing spondylitis. The inflammation can cause the pressure on a bundle of nerves called the cauda equina at the bottom of your spinal cord. This swelling can compact the nerves in the lower back and cause symptoms such as:
pain and numbness
stinging or tingling sensations in the legs
inability to walk
incontinence
Cauda equina syndrome can become a serious condition if it is left untreated, and can lead to paralysis and other severe issues. The condition usually requires immediate and emergency surgery in the allopathy, but we can prevent the surgery and other over the counter medicines by treating with various ayurvedic therapies and procedures such as – Snehapana, Abhyangam, Virechana, Nasyam, Tharpana and Netradhara etc. These ayurvedic therapies have the ultimate power to cure the disease with help of herbal decoctions, that too without any side effects. 17 Effects of Ankylosing Spondylitis on the body
Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that primarily affects the spine areas, but it has affected all over the body. The joints and ligaments of your spine become inflamed which can cause back pain and stiffness. AS can affect various other joints, and in some cases, it can damage your eyes, heart, or lungs. There are prevalent effects of AS on all major parts and systems of the body that are to be taken care of. The 17 effects of Ankylosing spondylitis on the body systems are described below-
Tumblr media
Skeletal system
The main target area of AS is the spine region.
One of the first symptoms of AS are felt in the spine, particularly in the lower back. Pain in these locations affects about 1 in 3 people. The pain can also spread to your groin, knees, or the front of your thighs.
It can also create trouble movements and reflex actions.
Nervous system
Ankylosing spondylitis can affect the nervous system as well.
The severe cases of AS can result in the formation of scars in the bundle of nerves in the body.
This can lead to various problems such as lack of bowel control, and sexual dysfunction. The effects on the nervous system can cause problems in the eye.
Eye inflammation can occur in some cases with AS. An individual may also feel pressure and pain in the eyes and may be sensitive to light. If you notice pain or redness, contact your doctor immediately.
Serious complications can arise, including – incontinence, sexual problems, urine retention, leg pain and weakness.
Skin, hair, nails
The minor parts of your body such as skin , hair and nails can also get affected due to AS.
People with AS may also develop psoriasis.
Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disorder that causes red, scaly patches on the skin. These patches can appear on the scalp, elbows, and knees and can even form lesions.
This can cause itchiness, tenderness, burning, and stinging.
Circulatory system – Ankylosing spondylitis can cause inflammation which has the probability of spreading over the aorta, which is the biggest artery in your body.
This can restrict the aorta from functioning normally, leading to numerous heart problems.
Respiratory system
Ankylosing spondylitis also affects the respiratory system of your body.
It causes stiffness between the ribs and spine which prevents your chest from expanding and further make it hard to breathe, officials reported.
There could also be a trouble of chest pain from scar tissue around your rib joints.
Some people also develop scarring or fibrosis at the top of their lungs.
Stomach and bowel problems
There are certain stomach and bowel problems caused by AS.
People can often experience inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and bowels either before the onset of joint symptoms or during the occurrence of this disease.
This can lead to stomach pain, diarrhea, and digestive problems.
It can also cause ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease in some cases.
Overall health
AS can have effects on the overall health of the patient.
People with AS suffer from fatigue which is a major concern. Sleep disrupted by pain can be a contributing factor of fatigue. Healthy lifestyle choices will help keep you in overall good health.
Inflammation caused due to AS may spread to the joints and cartilage in your ribcage. Over time, the bones in your ribcage may club, making it difficult or painful to breathe.
AS can also affect the jawbones and could lead to problems with eating and drinking.

Understand Age Related Macular Degeneration
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD or ARMD) is an eye disease in which macula gets deteriorated and the person with age 50 or older loses its central vision gradually.
What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?
Age related macular degeneration is a common eye condition having a problem with your eye’s retina. It happens usually when a part of the retina called the macula is deteriorated. With AMD person cannot see fine details, whether you are looking at something close or far. With AMD you lose your central vision. But your peripheral side vision will still be normal. It is a cause of vision loss among people age 50 and older. As AMD progresses, a blurred area near the center of vision is a common symptom. Researchers also have estimated that approximately 5 percent of blindness globally is due to AMD. Now the age related macular degeneration treatment in ayurveda.
Types of AMD
Dry AMD - It is a quite common type. About 80% of people who suffer from AMD have the dry form. It occurs when parts of the macula get thinner with age and tiny spots of protein grow. You slowly lose central vision. It is an early stage of the disease. However, visual impairment from dry AMD can continue to progress year after year, eventually leading to significant vision loss.
Wet AMD - This type is less common but much more severe. This type occurs when the new, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina. These vessels may leak blood or other fluids, causing scarring of the macula. The person may lose vision faster with wet AMD than with dry AMD.
Causes of AMD
Though the age related macular degeneration causes are not much clear but are associated with aging, studies suggest there also is a genetic component related to the disease.
The complement factor H (CFH), gene deficiency is associated with almost half of all potentially blinding cases of macular degeneration, research proves.
Another research has shown that various cells in the retina produce a type of protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which enhances the growth of new blood vessels in the retina, this is another cause of age related macular degeneration causes as too much VEGF in the eye causes the development of unwanted blood vessels in the retina that easily break open and bleed, damaging the macula and surrounding retina.
Risk Factors
Aging is a primary risk factor for AMD. Each decade of life after age 40 significantly increases one’s risk for the disease.
Heredity- Specific variants of different genes are present in most people who have macular degeneration. Family history and Genetics plays a great role in acquiring AMD. People with a family history of AMD are at higher risk.
Smoking. Smoking is another major risk factor for AMD.
Obesity Researchers have found that people with dry AMD who were also obese had more than double the risk of developing advanced macular degeneration, compared with people of normal body weight.
Inactivity. People with dry AMD who perform the vigorous activity at least three times weekly reduced their risk of developing advanced AMD, compared with people with dry AMD who were sedentary.
Spending too much time in the sun can also increase the risk factor for AMD.
Signs and Symptoms of AMD
Age related macular degeneration symptom includes a slow, painless loss of vision.
Early age related macular degeneration symptoms include shadowy areas in your central vision or unusually distorted spots that affect only the central portion of your field of vision.
If your eye doctor detects some defect in your central vision, such as distortion or blurriness, he or she may order special imaging tests to examine the retinal blood vessels surrounding the macula.
Dark, blurry areas or whiteout that appears in the center of your vision.
Words in a book or newspaper may become blurred.
Colors appear less bright.
Difficulty in recognizing the faces.
One specific age related macular degeneration symptom is visual distortion. Typically, straight lines appear wavy or crooked.
Visual hallucinations are one of the common age related macular degeneration symptoms in people with severe visual loss of any cause.
Know about your symptoms and get a cure with age related macular degeneration treatment in ayurveda.
Diagnosis of AMD
Various comprehensive dilated eye exams can detect AMD. The eye exam may include the following:
Visual acuity test - This eye chart measures how well a patient sees at distances.
Dilated eye exam - The doctor places drops in your eyes to widen or dilate the pupils. This provides a better view of the back of your eye. Then, using a special magnifying lens, he or she then looks at your retina and optic nerve for signs of AMD and other eye problems.
Amsler grid - The doctor also may ask you to look at an Amsler grid. Changes in your central vision may cause the lines in the grid to disappear or appear wavy, a sign of AMD.
Optical coherence tomography - OCT is similar to ultrasound, except that it uses light waves, and can achieve very high-resolution images of any tissues that can be penetrated by light, such as the eyes.

Ankylosing Spondylitis and Eye Inflammation: What You Should Know
Ankylosing spondylitis or AS is a type of inflammatory disease. This disease also refers to severe stiffness and inflammation in the spine. It causes aching and pain around the spine and pelvis. While Ankylosing spondylitis is common in the spine and large joints, it may also occur in other areas of the body, such as the eyes, in this case, it is known as Uveitis. Near about 40-50 percent of people with AS develop eye inflammation or uveitis. The prevalence of ankylosing spondylitis is most common in men 17-35 years of age. Moreover in women, the symptoms of this disorder often appear during pregnancy for the first time. Uveitis is an inflammation of the front part of the eye called the uvea, including the iris and ciliary body. The cause of uveitis is unknown, however, the immune response associated with ankylosing spondylitis that causes the spinal problems are most likely similar to the inflammation seen with uveitis. There are several other causes of uveitis as well, but this disease has more chances to occur when ankylosing spondylitis is present.
Why does eye inflammation (uveitis) develop?
AS is an elemental disease, which means it may impact multiple areas of the body and cause widespread inflammation. The main causative factor considered for this disease is the HLA-B27 gene, as it is proved that this gene is present in many people who have ankylosing spondylitis.
Other conditions that share the gene include inflammatory bowel disease and reactive arthritis. Uveitis proves to be the first sign that you have when a systemic condition such as AS pertains. Uveitis may also occur independently of other inflammatory conditions.
How are ankylosing spondylitis related Eye Problems Treated and Diagnosed? The diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis is made on the basis of the patient’s history, a physical examination, X-ray films, and laboratory tests.
A cure for ankylosing spondylitis does not currently exist in allopathy; however, effective treatment options can relieve pain and improve a person's condition. The general approach to treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and ayurvedic therapies. The major Ayurveda procedures which are done for the permanent treatment of uveitis in Ayurveda are Snehapana, Abhyanga & Swedana, Virechana, Nasya, Netradhara, Anjana & Aschyotana, Thakradhara and Tharpana
What Are the Symptoms of Anterior Uveitis?
Uveitis usually impacts one eye at a time, although it can develop in both the eyes. It may happen suddenly and become severe at a faster pace of time, or it can develop slowly and worsen over several weeks. The most common symptom of uveitis is redness in the front of the eye. Other symptoms of uveitis may include eye redness, photophobia or light sensitivity, pain in the eye, and blurred, cloudy vision. There also occurs a discharge from the eyes which is quite uncommon. The pain in the eye is deep which is made worse by being in contact with bright light. The symptoms usually develop over a few hours.
Diagnosis of uveitis
The primary step in the diagnosis of Uveitis is reviewing your medical history and a complete eye check-up. There are various tests to diagnose uveitis such as -
Eye chart test- This test is done to determine if your vision has declined or not. Fundoscopic exam- or ophthalmoscopy is performed to examine the back of the eye Ocular pressure test -  to measure the pressure of the eye. A slit lamp exam to examine the complete eye, including the blood vessels of your eye. Imaging tests, such as an X-ray or MRI, to view your joints and bones. In rare cases, the doctor may also perform a blood test to check for the HLA-B27 gene.
How is eye inflammation or Uveitis Treated-?
The uveitis can be treated very efficiently with the help of Ayurveda. There are various ayurvedic medicines and therapies that help in curing eye inflammation or uveitis. According to Ayurveda, the uveitis is caused by an imbalance in Vata and pitta dosha. This imbalance in Vata and pitta doshas can be caused by various factors such as an Imbalanced lifestyle, materialistic targets in life, disdain for life goals, eating habits, and disturbed sleeping patterns that work together to decrease the immunity of the cells. Therefore to cure this imbalance in these Vata and pitta doshas and to provide relief to your body from the cellular stress, a complete toxicity removal process is required for the body. This is done with the help of various ayurvedic and Panchakarma therapies.   The major Ayurveda therapies which are helpful in treating the eye inflammation being done in an Ayurvedic eye hospital are as follows:  Snehapana, Abhyanga, Swedana, Virechana, Nasya, Netradhara, Anjana & Aschyotana, Thakradhara, and Tharpana.
Preventions to protect Your Eyes from eye inflammation or Uveitis
Uveitis or AS can be treated at home with some minor home remedies such as – An annual eye exam is a must, and if you have been diagnosed with uveitis, you may need to see an eye specialist more frequently. You should wear protective eyewear or glasses when you’re playing or moving outside.Wear sunglasses that are designed for blocking the ultraviolet rays on sunny days.A break for your eyes is a must - While performing closeup tasks with the monitor or screen, for a long time, give your eyes a 20-second rest by looking 20 feet in the distance.
