a couple days ago i was with my friend and telling them about my disability and they said ā€œso if you have EDS does that mean you have that really stretchy skinā€ and i was like ā€œyeahā€ and started stretching it to show them and they looked away
i thought they were squeamish so i said ā€œsorry i didnā€™t know that would bother youā€ and they said ā€œno itā€™s not that, just that you donā€™t need to make your body a spectacle for me just because youā€™re disabledā€
and i have not stopped thinking about that

just a quick reminder to all my chronically ill friends out there:
Nobody prepared you for what was going to happen in your life. You didnā€™t get a warning that chronic illness was going to become a major part of your life. You have been able to figure this out with zero preparation, and for that I am proud of you. <3

even "mild" chronic pain can suck. really bad. your body just aches constantly and even though it's minor, it can eat away at you. please take your pain seriously no matter how bad you think it is. no one deserves to endure it if it's not something that can be treated or mitigated.

Old people that tell me "just wait till you get to be my age" are just mad that my conditions leveled up faster than theirs

things not to do/say to cane users:
ask why we have it. disability and chronic illnesses can be a really personal subject and not everyone wants to tell strangers (or even people they already know) why they have to use a cane.
make jokes about it. i once had a teacher who made a really rude joke when i first started using my cane and it was humiliating. a lot of cane users, especially young ones, are already insecure about having to use a cane in the first place. donā€™t embarrass us!
act like weā€™re deserving of pity or like weā€™re fragile. we arenā€™t charity cases, and we donā€™t need you to feel sorry for us just because they use a mobility aid. just treat us like normal people.
things you should for cane users:
open doors for us, especially if our hands are full. doing things like opening doors or carrying stuff can be very difficult one-handed!
offer us seats. a lot of cane users tire easily or are in pain and would appreciate having a place to sit.
defend us when people are rude. donā€™t be afraid to stand up for us when people ask invasive questions, question whether or not weā€™re disabled, or ignore us when we ask for help. ableism is everywhere and it can be difficult to stand up for ourselves alone!

When you're struggling with disability and mental illness, there's nothing reassuring about being told that you can do anything you put your mind to if you work hard enough. What I need to hear when I'm feeling down about my life isn't "someday, with enough effort, you can become a valuable member of society." What I do need to hear is that I'm good enough, worthy and valuable as I am right now. That I don't have to do or be anything more than what I'm currently capable of in order to be valuable.

Can't remember if I'd already asked this but to anyone else who takes allergy meds, have you experienced getting heart palpitations if you miss a dose?
