Huge Yes to this & to my friend’s reply in the tags, but I also want to add on that Phorgydetol has very strong Figurative association with Complacency in the season’s narrative.

After the professor and Ryan take these sponsor-endorsed drugs, they cease to care about what’s going on with Dorothy Ruth, that their loved ones may be in mortal danger, and completely block out very real, serious events, even if they’re directly effected by them– like the murder of Shane Madej in the street. like a dog.

Dorothy Ruth does not buy into this, and therefore she is in the way of the sponsor’s goal of controlling the show. In fact, she goes on to start threatening it, and for that she must be manipulated into submission and removed. The fact that once she’s on the drugs she objectifies herself is so very telling– that’s what sponsors want a woman to do. That’s what sells. They profit off it. There’s a specific way female creators are encouraged to look and act that will net them sponsorships and subscriptions, and that look is unfortunately Not one of a hardened noir sleuth.

Dorothy Ruth is just like many real women who are trying to challenge the status quo in internet entertainment, and unfortunately she was bullied out of the equation just like they have been. As for Ryan and the professor, they realized too late that their acceptance of the offer from Corporate was leading to the complete bastardization of their show– at least in the end they still cared about That. Many YouTubers don’t, and simply conform to the whims of what the platform and the money-holders say.

They’ve probably definitely learned their lesson, but unfortunately the Real People who need to learn this aren’t watching anymore!!!!

Dorothy Ruth and Her Awful Living Truth

Major spoilers for Puppet History S7 and its finale ahead!

The treatment that Dorothy Ruth faces throughout Season 7 is textbook misogyny. While this is primarily demonstrated through Elmer Walter Williams, other characters also fall into the attitude of dismissing Dorothy, reducing her to her looks and the limited role that she played in.

The show itself initially fell into this trap by casting Dorothy as a mere grieving widow in Season 5, her only role being delivering the sponsorship reads. Unlike her counterpart, Stanley Melvin, she was barely given any character traits outside of missing her husband and both dating and trying to get away from Elmer Walter Williams. She was nothing more than a bit character to make the sponsorship segments more interesting.

Later on, especially in Season 7, the show expanded her character quite a bit and gave her a bigger role. While her grief for Stanley Melvin is still a major character trait, she is also shown to be witty with a great sense of humor, intelligent in her observations, and headstrong in getting what she wants. She got her own segment where she was allowed to display those traits, and she even got a musical number divulging into her feelings of losing love.

However, just because she was seen by the show as worthy to be her own horse, that didn’t mean the other characters in the show saw her that way.

The cast, primarily consisting of men, diminishes her and brushes her plights aside. Dr. Sprat first demonstrates this with the "Can you blame him?" line referring to Elmer’s constant harassment of Dorothy who was visibly and verbally uncomfortable with him.

The Professor and Ryan also didn't take her seriously as she tried to tell them there was something suspicious going on with the Phorgedytol. Admittedly, they were coked up in drugs, but it was still really uncomfortable hearing Ryan comment, "She's got issues" after she got upset at them for not listening to her, and the Professor immediately follows that up with "Oh my god, she's a stunning woman” with Ryan agreeing with him. This behavior is extremely common among men who look down on women, dismissing their intelligence or even mocking it as stupidity, and only see value in their appearance. 

There is also something deeply sinister in how the two of them are being buddy-buddy with Elmer who was openly pushing Dorothy’s boundaries right in front of them. Again, they were being drugged, but the thing is drugs are known to reduce inhibitions, so this was their subconscious talking whether they like it or not. This is a stark contrast to Season 6 where you see the Professor also getting uncomfortable with Elmer’s behavior and encouraging Dorothy Ruth to leave him at the altar. It is reminiscent of how men can portray themselves as feminist in public, but when they are alone with other men who have nothing to lose, they are more lenient in allowing misogynistic behavior to fester. You can be an ally to women, yes, but will you continue to be an ally to them even when they are no longer in the room?

Finally, there’s the tour de force of misogyny himself: Elmer Fucking Walter Williams. In the sponsorship segments when he first appeared, he has done nothing but sexualize Dorothy Ruth. He made no mention of her good qualities other than how attractive and eager she is, and all of his attempts at wooing her are merely ploys to get in bed with her. Then Season 7 rolled around, and he got worse. He frequently ignored Dorothy’s multiple blatant attempts at showing her disinterest in him, refusing to let go of the relationship they had, and it escalated into denying her autonomy as he drugged her the moment she actually stood up for herself. With the Phorgedytol, he turned her into a submissive wife who degrades herself through sexualization and trapped her into a marriage she had no consent in.

Then later came the reveal that Dr. Sprat had been controlling Elmer the entire time and merely used the marriage with Dorothy Ruth to obtain the rights to Puppet History. While he did briefly pay his respects to her, this was also yet another demonstration of sexism but at an even larger scale. Instead of killing her mercifully like he did with his other victims, he took the long run of toying with her emotionally, manipulating her until she was no longer in control of her life, and killing her at her most vulnerable moment. He saw Dorothy as nothing more than a stepping stone to his ambitions, disregarding her entire being for his selfishness.

Dorothy’s story is one of tragedy and one that unfortunately parallels so many struggles that women face today. So much had been taken away from her from the love of her life to her very own life all at the hands of men who wouldn’t care less about her had she not served a role in their lives. An excellent story, but she really deserved better than this. My only hope is that she gets to kill next season. Please let her kill Shane please please please please plea
