Tumblr users "banning" a specific word with nuance is not really as significant as people think it is because people outside of Tumblr actually realize and recognize the nuance and uses the word has. OP isn't referring to intersex people as hermaphrodites, they are separate things, because they are stating the possibilities of a nonhuman fictional character's sex. When not referring to a human in the context of theorizing about how that species works, the word is perfectly fine because it is a science thing and not a bigotry thing. Intersex is listed as a different thing from hermaphrodite in the original post. He is not saying they are the same and therefore the problem here is a classic Tumblr moment of people being unable to see that a word has scientific uses beyond being a slur and that a word can be used as something that isn't just a slur.
