There are signs if you look for them
Species of creatures dying out
A rising sea
A smaller arctic
A feeling dread on the population
People moving on in fear and desperation
And the answer-
It isn’t ‘better’ politics
The answer is in your hearts
In your spirits
We need silence
We need emptiness
Friends
What we need
is less

Fresh sunlight tickles
The east windows at daybreak -
Good morning, everyone!

Break the Mirror
In the morning
After taking cold shower
—-what a mistake—-
I look at the mirror.
There, a funny guy,
Grey hair, white beard, wrinkled skin,
—-what a pity—-
Poor, dirty, old man,
He is not me, absolutely not.
Land and life
Fishing in the ocean
Sleeping in the desert with stars
Building a shelter in the mountains
Farming the ancient way
Singing with coyotes
Singing against nuclear war—
I’ll never be tired of life.
Now I’m seventeen years old,
Very charming young man.
I sit quietly in lotus position,
Meditating, meditating for nothing.
Suddenly a voice comes to me:
“To stay young,
To save the world,
Break the mirror.”
Nanao Sakaki

These houses of flesh and bone
The breath of life moves through a deathless valley
Lao Tzu
We live in these houses of flesh and bone
Walled in by the soul of our own existence
Roofed by that love which we can create
With our own hearts, our own experience
In time, we leave these houses and move
Into the atoms of some other far moment
A moment beyond our measure and sight
As if we only continue on in the passing
Of one second into the next, in between
The breaths of our different thoughts
Here, we are men, we are women
There, we are the beams of light sent
From one heaven to another heaven
And there millions of these heavens
And the beams of light illuminate the road
That our consciousness walks through space

The winter rains have come again
Bringing life to the earth
Spring will return with great rebirth
Until then let us smuggle our own light
To meet this darkness
What is darkness anyway
Dance through the raindrops
The sun will return
The wheel of the year will turn

A full moon on a winter night
The eyes of the pine forest
Blink in the sleep shadows
The carpet of pine needles
Is silent beneath the coyote’s paws
See how her breath hangs
In a perfect fog
O silent midnight
You are a diamond
