Six months ago we were given 2 seconds of footage that started a fandom wide excitement for more information. Those two seconds were the footage of the forehead touching scene with Pythagoras and Icarus (We now know it was the confrontation after the betrayal was discovered). It started a ship before the series had even started and even longer before Icarus was actually introduced as a character.

For months we were desperate for this not to be just another case of queerbaiting; we’ve basically been called crazy by other writers of shows for thinking we could actually have a canon homosexual couple when we’re given two male characters who frequently have intimate moments, so naturally because of this we were extremely apprehensive but we still got so invested into this ship and you know what? WE WERE RIGHT.

Atlantis just gave a big ‘Fuck you’ to every writer who thinks it’s okay to build up a homosexual romance but not have it go anywhere just because they want to attract the liberal audience but are too scared to actually make it canon and then completely deny any knowledge of what they are clearly doing. Take note other writers because this is how you fucking do it. You build it up and then you actually give your audience what they want instead of insulting them repeatedly for seeing things that you purposefully write in.

Thank you Atlantis writers because you know how to write a canon homosexual romance and I will always be grateful for that, despite the show being cancelled way too soon.

THEY WERE LITERALLY FINE WITH YOUR SEXUALITY AS LONG AS ONE OF YOU WAS THE GIVER AND ONE WAS THE RECEIVER. NO ONE WOULD HAVE DISCRIMINATED PYTHAGORAS AND ICARUS FOR THEIR FEELINGS.

I'm so confused like, the BBC has had same-sex couples before (before 9pm as well) Eastenders, Casualty, Holby City Doctor Who. There are others I just can't remember now ((Waterloo Road)) why is everybody treating this like it's something incredible

(cont. Sorry I’m on mob) when it’s barely breaking a boundary. Like the setup for season 3 defo included Icarus as a main character so their relationship would have been at the forefront,

cont. But this is the BBC so we know it would have been shoved to the back, probably ending in one of them dying. I mean, come on we know how Icarus’ story ends just look at Medusa. I just don’t get why ppl are acting like this is something it isn’t

Sorry I don’t mean to sound rude I’m just curious

Personally, I feel like it’s a big deal and very important for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, yes there have been same sex couples on the BBC before and yes that’s fantastic for representation and I’m so happy that it’s happened on one of the most popular networks in the UK.

Now the reason, at least for me, that it’s so different and so much more amazing this time is that normally same sex couples only happen in soaps, like Eastenders and all the others you mentioned (I don’t watch any soaps btw so I know very little about any storylines for f/f or m/m couples other than what I see in the papers) and when they do there’s always some sort of conflict driving it.

What I mean by that is it’s usually a character(s) exploring their sexuality or there’s a bigger storyline that involves it conflicting with a family member or friends views or it just generally becomes a big thing that’s different and focused on because it’s a gay relationship. It’s elevated to getting more focus than an opposite sex relationship because it’s different in the sense that it’s not the ‘norm’.

I’m not saying that highlighting it is a bad thing and it is something that should be done because the more it’s present the more acceptable it becomes BUT sometimes it’s sort of overdone to the point where it’s a sort of showing off of a gay relationship almost to say ‘look here’s a gay relationship, we love gays, we accept gays, wow aren’t we so cool’.

Also, the DW one doesn’t really count as much for me because the kiss between Madam Vastra and Jenny was framed in a way where they ignored the romanticism of it and made it a practical thing. They kissed because they were sharing oxygen in order to prevent Jenny’s death. So it was almost as though it could’ve been a kiss shared between any of the characters and it just happened to be two females because DW had never had a same sex couple kiss on the show before. So while again it was great for representation, it was also sort of a cop out imo.

Now to the reason the Pythagoras/Icarus kiss was such a big deal to me (and possibly many others).

Since season one there have been hints that Pythagoras was possibly a gay/bi character. The main scene that solidified it for me was in 1x11 when Jason was cursed by Hecate for eating sacrificial meat and was turned into a feral dog thing (?) at night which left him in a state of undress when he turned back into a human.

Now, when Jason comes back home (naked) from one of his nightly outings, Hercules makes a point to cover Pythagoras’ eyes so he can’t see Jason to which Pythagoras then physically moves above Hercules’ hand in order to better view naked!Jason at which point Pythagoras’ face is one of actual adorable shock/glee because naked!Jason.

So that was a major hint that Pythagoras was into dudes and like I said there are several other times where his sexuality is clearly not heterosexual.

What I absolutely adored about the S2 finale is that we’ve had strong hints that there was something more going on between Pythagoras and Icarus for a few episodes but it’s been framed in a way that could just mean they were super close platonic friends or could be more. The finale absolutely set it firmly in the “we love each other more than just friends” category.

It was beautiful. There was angst and tension and it was clear that they were building towards a romance.

So this is what made it so much more amazing than other shows. It was acknowledged without being made a big deal. It was there but there was no ‘omg he’s gay’ reveal. It just was. And all of Pyth’s friends were just completely on board with it. There was no ‘omg you like him don’t you?’ everyone already knew they liked each other in that way and everybody knew why Icarus’ betrayal was so much more of a big deal to Pythagoras.

AND THEN ICARUS SAVED THEM AND GOT HURT IN THE PROCESS AND WE HAD THE SCENE THAT BROKE THE FANDOM

Now, I honestly all episode did not believe they would actually kiss. I thought that might be a little too out there for a primetime, Saturday night family show. I watched it with my Mum (first time she’d ever watched it) and the whole episode she knew there was something between P/I and she was really shocked that it was on so early in the evening and that it was being shown so clearly that there was romance between two male characters, one of which is a main male character.

When they actually kissed my Mum literally went ‘wow’ whilst I almost had a heart attack and was reduced to a mess on the sofa.

It was amazing because it was a canon gay relationship on a popular Saturday night family show where the storyline was never introduced as having a same sex relationship, there was no fanfare about it and no big deal made of it it was just there and acknowledged and played out and recognized without the need for it to be anything more than just being there.

And that is why it was such a big deal for me because it wasn’t made into a big deal. It got exactly the same treatment as any m/f couple. It wasn’t singled out and framed to be different to the ‘norm’. It wasn’t a plot twist or a shocking reveal. It just was.

Because it wasn’t introduced as something different to m/f it was put on the same level as a m/f relationship which to me made it so much more of a positive representation and it was even better because it’s on a family show that will have been seen by so many people where it’s being validated without making it such a different, big, separate thing.

I don’t know if I’m explaining myself properly but that’s the best I can do to explain why I loved it so much. And thank you for asking and you definitely were not rude at all :)

I love how the BBC wrote fannishly. Icarus is supposed to die, and they were obviously like ‘nah, we’re gonna deny that ever happened’. The circumvention was too brilliant. Flies too close to the sun and dies? Get rid of the sun :D

No but imagine Pythagoras working out his theorem and proving it and being so excited about his triangles and the first person he tells is Icarus. Pythagoras starts talking and going off on tangents and he’s so excited but he apologises for boring him but Icarus is equally excited because he’s so happy that Pythagoras has achieved what he had been wanting to do for years, but doesn’t really understand much of what Pythagoras is saying.

But when Pythagoras comes home in the evening Icarus has spent the whole day learning all about triangles and geometry so that he could understand what his boyfriend is passionate about and then they go up onto the roof and look at the stars and Pythagoras knows that he has found someone who he loves even more than triangles.

Okay but

Pythagoras starting to talk about a theory he has but Hercules and Jason jokingly complaining about how no one wants to hear about it, so he stops because he doesn’t want to bore them, then Icarus starts asking questions because he just loves how passionate Pyth is

Icarus convinced that Pyth is still angry at him so he keeps doing all these stupid heroic things to make up for it and Pythagoras tells him that he would never forgive him if he got himself killed

Hercules making all these jokes about how “Pythagoras is all grown up and in love”

Icarus still getting surprised every time Pythagoras kisses him because he thought he’d lost all chance of it ever working out for them

Pyth trying to adjust to the fact that he’d always paled in comparison to Jason and Hercules, but here is an amazing man who thinks he’s wonderful and wants to talk to him about triangles and numbers and counting the stars in the sky
