I’m an Australian.

Yesterday all Australian citizens of voting age participated in a referendum to add an Aboriginal voice to parliament in our constitution. This referendum failed by a large margin.

I’m a student.

I take classes on law and politics. We had class discussions, even an entire study unit about this referendum, but most of these almost voter aged Australians didn’t, and still don’t, understand what this change would entail.

It’s an advisory group. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. It doesn’t have veto power, or lawmaking capabilities or anything, it would just be another opinion in parliament that they could follow or ignore as they see fit.

This is what everyone has been up in arms about.

I have never been proud of being Australian. I feel there is very little to be proud about. But this a time where I feel shame.

Not solely because of the outcome, but the lack, and utter refusal, of understanding. I can accept an educated No vote. I loathe a No vote motivated by fear of the other, a No vote motivated by racism, a No vote motivated by propaganda. I loathe the No votes because they themselves do not know what they stand for, or rather, what they stand against.

I loathe this No vote specifically.

Shout out to the doctor who told me that pots was a “trendy disorder” and said people were faking it and then proceeded to do the test wrong and when he realised he didn’t correct it and still based his (lack of) diagnosis on it and then told me that exercise would fix my blacking out and falling down and chronic pain issues, I hope he has the time he deserves.
