I have packed (and managed to get everything for a two-week trip, INCLUDING books, into two carry-on bags. Laud me etc). I have my passport and printed all the travel documents. I have checked my flight status eighty billion times because Anxiety. In short, I am incredibly (possibly too incredibly) prepared.

Now: witness me staring vigilantly at the clock until 4pm, whereupon (and not a second later) I will immediately sign out of Teams, delete the Outlook app on my phone, check that my Out of Office AutoReply has kicked in as scheduled, and not look at a single, do you hear me a single goddamn email, for two entire glorious weeks away from Academia Tee Em. The end.

so i'm a custodian.

whenever someone does something cool like shit on the bathroom floor or get blood all over a toilet, i have to close the bathroom down by blocking the doorway with a CLOSED sign.

this sign is big and bright. it says CLOSED in four languages and has a do not enter symbol. it completely blocks the doorway. the only way to enter is to look directly at the sign and either move it or climb over it.

almost every single time i shut down a bathroom so i can suit up and clean a biohazard, someone will enter the bathroom with a dead-eyed, slack-jawed expression and try to wordlessly walk past me to use a stall.

and every single time, i have to block their path and say, "this bathroom is closed. there is one directly down the hall, marked by signs. please leave," and they either try to argue that THEY specifically should be allowed to use this one, as if they are god's most special little guy, or express shock even though they, again, had to contend with the CLOSED sign to enter.

often, i am standing there in the middle of cleaning up bodily fluids having to firmly repeat myself. they always leave angry or confused.

i was outside w/ my cat just now. and he went behind a shrub for a bit, and me not realizing my neighbor was on the other side of that same shrub, poked my head round and said way louder than necessary, “my SCRUMPTIOUS darling boy, what ever are you doing over there??”

and this 40-something man i very rarely speak to handled it w/ remarkable grace and very tentatively responded “…..watering my.. roses? you?”

ohhh my god. Ok so i was explaining bottom surgery to my dad. And he wasnt weird about it thank god (i didnt expect him to be mind you but yknow cis people) but at the fucking end he was like. Well you know what the other term for a phalloplasty is right. and i was like. what is it. And he said. it's an addadicktomy. (Like. add a dick to me.) my dad out-joked me about something transgender. i cant believe this
