Album review: I Got Heaven By Mannequin Pussy
I Got Heaven feels like a breakup that keeps repeating itself. It's a look at love in all it's phases, the highs and lows. The album covers themes of longing, turmoil, and fleeting hope. Each song telling a vivid love story that is both mosh-worthy and melodically introspective.
About the band
In my opinion, Mannequin Pussy's 4th album is a no-skips, repeat-worthy masterpiece. The band came out of Philadelphia in 2014 with a classic origin story. The founding members met in high school and shopped their music around on cassette tape and online on Bandcamp. Achieving critical and popular acclaim for songs like "Romantic" and "Drunk II" off their second and third albums, the band has now produced a great introduction for new fans.
Like their earlier work, this album has an in-your-face deviant streak, but that's balanced with heart-felt love songs that could easily fit on a pop album. "There's just so much constantly going on that feels intentionally evil that trying to make something beautiful feels like a radical act,” says singer, Marisa "Missy" Dabice. They've been touring like crazy in the Northeast U.S. I saw them twice in less than a year. Their live shows are memorable, affordable, and draw audiences young and old alike.
Best first listen 🔈 I Got Heaven
This song feels like a radical act from the first few chords. The guitar, the drums, the vocals, they make you want to thrash and flail about, but then the chorus comes through gentle and clear. It's a hymn sung to face adversity with resolve. "I Got Heaven" is about holding onto the spirit no one can touch or break. This song got me through tough times, but even before that, I was obsessed with it ever since it came out as the first single.
"What if I'm an angel? What if I'm a bore? What if I was confident, would you just hate me more?"
Catchiest 🦗 Nothing Like
"Nothing Like" feels so nostalgic like a 90s alt rock song. It reminds me of "When you sleep" by my bloody valentine or "1979" by Smashing Pumpkins. The lyrics speak to being young and in love. It's a soft embrace that has no idea what's coming next. It contrasts so well with the song that follows it, "I Don't Know You," which bottoms out the warm fuzzy feeling. Like slipping through the clouds of a crush into dissolution. The haunting melody of Maxine Steen's synth sounds like the Doppler effect of sirens in the night. These two songs pair so well I couldn't help reviewing two in one.
Standout ⭐ Loud Bark
This track has garnered lots of praise on Tiktok, but I'll admit I didn't get the hype until I saw it performed live. It's starts off low and moody, Missy sings softly and the drums keep an even pace. Then at the chorus it builds, with the lyrics "Loud Bark, Deep Bite" repeating and all the instruments getting louder until Missy ends in a gasping scream. Chanting along with her in the crowd chant is exhilarating. Both this song and "I Got Heaven" use dogs as a metaphor. Dogs can be subservient, crave love and attention, and at the same time be wild and dangerous. Despite the initial slow pace I couldn't help moshing to this one. Honorable mention to my runner up for stand out "OK? OK! OK? OK!" Both Missy and Colins "Bear" Regisford both deliver phenomenal vocal performances.
My favorite 💜 Softly
"Softly" is a devastating song. The lyrics will resonate with anyone who's gone through the beginning of the end of a relationship. The part when something you can't explain tells you it won't last. Waking up in the morning and looking into your lover's face while holding that nagging feeling. Missy's voice switches from a whisper to a raw scream so smoothly. Her voice is layered on top of a fuzzy, grunge guitar and punchy drums by Kaleen Reading. When it gets to the end of the song depending on my mood, I'll hum along with the happy refrain or let loose with a cathartic scream—either way, "Softly" echos in your brain after it ends.
