I don't discuss it all that often, but I have a fondness for Mario; unlike stuff like Sonic or Megaman, though, I don't think I had any coherent AU ideas ("coherent" doing a lot of heavy lifting there). Time to fix that.
The basic conceit is "another adaptation the likes of which Nintendo would never sign off on today", influenced by SMB '93 (note Mario's, Luigi's, and Daisy's outfits) with some "The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach" thrown in (Haru's presence, the basis for the Toads).
Notes below:
Mario: the hero, as per usual. Worked as a freelance plumber alongside his brother Luigi in New Donk City until circumstances brought the two and Pauline to the Mushroom Kingdom. A jovial, compassionate guy who is also way too good at combat acrobatics for someone who claims that he was "just" a plumber.
Luigi: the lancer. As shaken as he is by this sudden turn of events, Luigi is doing his best to face everything head-on; unlike Mario, he prefers outmaneuvering his enemies over fighting them directly. Boyfriend of Pauline.
Peach: the runaway royal. Peach heads to the Metro Kingdom to try and get away from her wicked aunt, Queen Lena, only to dive right back into the Mushroom Kingdom to set things right. She attempts to pass herself off as a civilian to the Mario Bros., with limited success.
Prince Haru: the other runaway royal. After failing to reel in his mother Lena, Haru tracks down Peach and accidentally blows her cover. He's a skilled diplomat, but too fragile to provide anything out on the field except buffs. Takes a shine to Mario after the plumber rescues him from Bowser's forces.
Toadette: a Mushroomian and Peach's best buddy. She joins up with the heroes not long after they arrive in the Mushroom Kingdom, helping them to navigate the place after they (sans Haru) end up on Queen Lena's "wanted" list.
Daisy: the last descendant of the long-gone Sarasaland royal family. Daisy works as an archaeologist; her findings place her in Bowser's crosshairs, though he swiftly comes to regret sending minions after a woman who can punch Koopas into next week. Infatuated with Peach.
Pauline: a down-on-her-luck singer who was rooming with the Mario Bros. Just when it seemed like things couldn't get worse, this gorilla in a jaunty tie grabs her and legs it out of the Metro Kingdom--though not to kidnap her, as it turns out. Pauline is still a bit sore about that, though.
Yoshi: a member of the self-named species; this Yoshi may or may not be one of the Yoshis that the Mario Bros. faintly recall being surrounded by as very young children. He's on the runty side and thus too small for anyone but Toadette to ride, but he helps out where he can.
--
Other stuff:
As you might've noticed, I'm not going with the canon pairings here, because I like making things harder on myself doing things different. This AU concept has Mario/Haru, Peach/Daisy, and Luigi/Pauline.
Haru's design changed a lot between OVA and AU; my main concern was figuring out a colour palette that worked. The skirt was influenced by some art of CrystalCrowned. Story-wise, Haru's no longer the prince of the Flower Kingdom (especially not when Wonder introduced its own take), nor betrothed to Peach.
Peach's mother here was a nun, Sister Hildy; the King outlived her by about ten years before succumbing to illness. The Mushroom Kingdom's weird succession laws allowed Lena to take the throne before Peach or Haru.
Yes, that's Lena from SMB '93.
I like modern Yoshi well enough, but trying to figure out how their sphere-snouts work is an exercise best left to someone else. This Yoshi is based on older artwork.

Project no. 23: Eternal Sailor Neptune (with bonus UraNep shot)! I told myself that she had to directly follow Uranus, because why wouldn't she.
Eight senshi in, and I finally did something about the arms. :U If/when I get around to cross-posting my patterns to Dreamwidth, everyone's patterns will be updated.
Note: whether you need four or five rows for the skirts will depend on how your yarn cooperates (or doesn't).

Eternal Sailor Uranus, project no. 22 and the first of the Outers to be made. (Actually finished her a few days ago, but when it came time to edit photos/post, I got a bit... sidetracked.)
Note the first: her hair colour, "sand", is in quotes because I used Magical Mystery Yarn(TM) from the basement that had long since shed its label. Substitute for whatever shade of light brown or blonde you want.
Note the second: while the pattern lists four rounds for the skirts as usual, I had to do one extra row for both. Your navy-blue yarn may cooperate more than mine.
(EDIT: revised the arms.)

I think the worst kind of "burst of ADHD-addled need to find certain things" is hitting a brick wall almost immediately because [thing] has been thoroughly memory-holed.
Today, it's the Megaman X fic/fan concepts of Ryunosuke Kayama, webmaster of "Codename Yoshi"/"Virtual Study Desk"; he's the originator of certain bits of old MMX fanon, mostly surnames (if you ever saw older fans referring to Zero as "Zero Omega", that's why). Kayama's "Rockman X Final" would've seen X and Zero take on the Redbird Corporation, led by a human named Alexandra Buckner who desires to retake the world from Reploids; her all-female troupe served as the standard eight bosses.
Interesting stuff. Unfortunately, there's a ton of images that didn't get archived, with a few URLs pointing to the dreaded Archived Error Message. Searching for any mention of VSD got me absolutely nothing.
So I'm hoping that someone who saved all of Kayama's art will see this post and undo this bit of Internet-based entropy.

Project no. 20 and last of the Inners, Eternal Sailor Venus!
I opted not to use the same day-glo orange that went into Astarte's tertiary, instead trying out cotton yarn for the first time because that was the only material I had a lighter shade of orange in; feels nice in hand, though I had to crochet extra rows/rounds on her collar and skirt (the pattern assumes that you're using all of one material).
It's not obvious in these photos, but Venus does have two layers of skirt like the others.

Caleb doesn't have formal hand-to-hand combat training, but he did get reasonably good at throwing opponents for the 'ole pin-and-stab (or just to break their necks).
Ref'd the pose.

Remember that old Japanese magazine that interpreted Link as a redheaded girl? I based some AU concepts on it.
I dunno yet if an actual story will come from this, but the basic premise: Link, a mercenary from Calatia, arrives in Hyrule alongside her travel companion Xellos. Her ensuing adventures would probably be structured like DiC's LoZ show, except Link is much less of a conversationalist.
Other notes:
Xellos is an OC; he's a mage who made a pact with a Great Dark Fairy for increased magic power at the cost of being her servant. (The Great Dark Fairy in question, Solo, is a good guy--but she's rather capricious.)
Sarsaparilla, another OC, would be Zelda's fairy companion here.
All of the Sages in OoT are named after towns in Zelda II, with the exception of "Kasuto"; as such, "Kasuto" is a bit like Sailor Moon's equivalent to "Sailor Earth". This take on Kasuto is a sharp-tongued circus performer.

ACTUAL last update to Mercury, I swear. :U Filled out the other side of her bangs, both to give it something resembling her actual hair shape and as a test run for Venus's, Uranus's, and Pluto's hair.
Edited her pattern yet again to reflect this, and also fixed some errors (bangs A and B were calling for more stitches than could actually fit).

Amigurumi Eternal Sailor Jupiter! Finished in the waning days of 2023, only uploaded now.
If you're wondering why I used "citrine dream" for her skin tone instead of light peach: I got into the habit of drawing Jupiter with the same skin tone as Vince, and wanted to keep things consistent.
[EDIT 1/8/24: sewed her bangs up and together to give them more of their shape.]

The other day, I took a chance and did something about Porygon2's floppy, precarious tail stem: reinforce it with more rounds of single crochets. I had to close this second layer around the stem and work upwards until it was long enough, which was more than a little hand-crampy, then sew it down at both ends.
End result: Porygon2's tail is much more structurally sound, resting at an upward-ish angle instead of on the floor. Now I no longer need to manually support the tail when holding or displaying Pory.
(If you're wondering why I didn't just make the stem thick enough the first time: I hadn't yet learned the lesson of "if stuffing a piece a normal amount would make it explode, it's too thin".)

Projects 12 and 13: two members of my Pokemon X team, Helios (dark green/red) and Selene (normal colours), back when they were both Kirlias. I was considering marking Selene as "project 12.5", since he's made from the same pattern, but decided to save myself future numbering headaches.
Helios is a remake of my first-ever amigurumi, shown in the third photo for comparison; I was able to give him a fuller skirt (even if I could only fit on five segments) and didn't make the mistake of stuffing his hair. While I was already thinking about it, having a piece left over from Helios spurred me to make Selene right after; they took about three days each, which has to be a personal record.
The original pattern I followed was by Machbunny; this new one is entirely my own and can be seen below:
