I could pick him out in a crowd of ten thousand by just the sound of his breath. And if I were ever to go deaf—Delhi, Dacca. However unfamiliar and populous the streets, I’d know the line of his body better than I know the map of my own palms.
So, yes. Very much. In that inexorable and pure way one likes to feel the July sun, the way it sinks down to their deepest blood.
Do you really like them?

In the way Venus is—or a particularly tall, towering tree, rising out of a sea of green leaves, a breath before the gleaming line of the horizon.
It’s a very human thing, to crave attention. A profoundly mammalian instinct. Five years ago, answering this same question, I would have told you that I ache to be understood, to be known and known completely, mortifying ordeal or no. But this is impossible. In the interim, I have made peace with this essential fact of loneliness which seems, to me, inherent to existence. The border between people can blur, but it can never be completely broken through: and that’s alright.
So, Venus, or a towering tree. Rather than being admired, or desired, or acknowledged—all things which come with assumptions, with people consciously or unconsciously imposing their impression, their image of me over my true face, a face which may perhaps be known in its entirety only to God—I would rather inspire in people that selfsame sense of brightness, a point of beauty alien and remote and, crucially, fleeting.
As a person, I hope to only be a tall stranger slipping through the crowd, leaving behind the faint fragrance of good perfume. The eye may rest on me for a moment: just long enough to remember without a particularly strong impression. That woman’s hair is so long!, perhaps. What a lovely coat.
As a writer...
Like Venus in cornflower blue, like a tall tree in twilight, I hope to leave my reader inchoate and contemplative. Not the door but the doorway, you know? Not the fire but the match.
Venus in blue, a tall green tree, swaying as dusk burns itself out.
Do you want to be noticed?
#in less poetic terms: not particularly. i don't want to be noticed as a person per se—but rather as a familiar (if distant) voice.#familiar in the way nature is; which is to say familiar as in “the known unknown.” does that make sense?#exquero

What do you want out of a writing community?
#people who interact with my writing...like literally just that. i don't mean critique i mean People Who Willingly Read What Others Wrote#and once they're done they express what they thought. like 'oh that's such an interesting concept' or even just a 'that was beautiful'#'i loved your line breaks you have such a way with breath' even the humble 'woah!!'#people who read attentively and purposefully. you know? people who read and think about what they read.#and secondly—but importantly bc this is what feeds the above drive—i want people who genuinely care about writing and literature#people who love the craft and whatever it happens to mean to them#people who aren't here because they dream of going booktok famous someday but because there's an itch in them that can't be scratched. yeah

Earlier tonight I stumbled upon an archived interview with the author of a so-called Odyssey ‘retelling’ that left me so incensed, I had to make an erasure out of it just to feel as though something positive has come out of the encounter.

Discussion 11/22/2024
1. Pigeon
2. Mended heart
3. Bad boyfriend
4. College major
5. Godchild
#exquero#this one's just for pigeon. although mended heart has a uh shadow appearance. in a sense.#and—i would love more discussion prompts in 2025! v classic nbc indeed#(although maybe not so often centered around those best conductive to uni | academia / young adult characters in a modern setting... ;;)#(I have little to no interest in those sorts of stories so I personally always kind of struggled there)

Hello! You mention in your pinned post that using your writing in some artwork (with credit) is okay, but I wanted to double check in this instance. A while ago, I created a graphic for a class using a quote from your old slug post, and I would like to post it on my website as part of my portfolio (and potentially on my social media as well). I do not intend to sell prints of it, only to post it as an example of my art/design work. Would that be alright by you? Thank you for your time!
Hello!
Including it in your portfolio is absolutely alright, of course. :]
As for reposting it on social networking platforms: the one thing I’d ask is that you include a linkback to my tumblr somewhere in the caption, if possible. ^^
(Bit of an aside, but your graphic came out lovely! Very nice work.)
& Thank you for taking the time to check with me before posting anywhere. It really means a lot. :]

hi leah! when will your newest chapbook be available?
hello hello!
truthfully, LIA/LEAH was supposed to come out back in late July; life intervened however, and the ensuing mental strain took me away from the process of it. I’m doing marginally better now: the manuscript is nearing its final edits. hopefully, I’ll be able to have it go live towards the end of this month, early October at the latest. :]

Starting off my good friend @pinescrow's challenge to write every day throughout September with a scene intended as both a warm-up and a character dynamic ‘pat-map’.
I do this sometimes—take two characters from a project that is still largely amorphous and have them interact in a context situated somewhere outside the central vein of the story’s plot. It’s people-watching, essentially, except the people in question exist entirely inside my head.
