THE SCOTSMAN REVIEW by David Pollock
"...the show is propelled by the majestic twin comic talents..."
"...comedian Nicholas Ellenbogen [is] a gentleman possessed of a classical actor’s bearing which lends him a dignified deadpan..."
"...Ella Gabriel [is] a performer with a depth of physical and emotional intensity that seems out of keeping with the lightness of the material."

The secret surrounding the making of malt whisky made its way from the shores of Scotland to the eastern Cape of Africa. The excise men are hounding young Charlie Hepburn, so he escapes on a ship to Africa. Before the ship ploughs through high troughs rounding the bulge of Africa, Charlie meets comely Fiona Gilpin, a conscientious young woman who spins his life in the other direction. Love is born (not once but twice in this tasty tale) and the rest is pioneer history! Starring the South African master comedian Nicholas Ellenbogen and one of Cape Town’s rising talents, Ella Gabriel. Brought to you by Theatre for Africa - winners of three Fringe Firsts and a Herald’s Angel.

Tonight's opening of the Ellenbogens' new little theatre in Rosebank had a great warm and fuzzy family feel to it. Of course, sitting down to the umpteenth Raiders show (as far as possible from the stage!) could have had something to do with it too! Och, aye! Ella Gabriel still fascinates me every time I see her on stage. So, so much talent... she's awe-inspiring! And Nicholas... give the man a dram with plenty of charisma until he breaks down and weeps while the sheep continue disappearing into the distance. Sorry, you'll have to see Raiders: The Whiskey Trader for the latter reference.

Well done to Nicholas and Luke Ellenbogen and their families for bringing the Rosebank Theatre to life! Make sure to see Raiders: The Whisky Trader, it’s only on for one more week and celebrates the true meaning of what theatre is all about; allowing people from all walks of life to get together, have total fun and it ignites our imaginations. In 'Raiders: The Whisky Traider', award-winning theatre maker Nicholas Ellenbogen shares the stage with Ella Gabriel (Fleur du Cap best supporting actress nominee for 'The View').
This time around the story concentrates on an old Professor, a world authority on the history of the Eastern Cape, who uncovers some interesting facts about the Hepburn family, the ancestors of flying ace Salty Hepburn. It is a happy tale of a woman who escapes the horrors of class and snobbery in rural England for the wide open space of Africa, taking the fine Hepburn malt with her on the journey.
