I made a really angry post about this yesterday but took it down because I didn't want that tone so close to BXG day, but yeah - this is just so frustrating.

Here's yet another reminder to readers not to send me things from other platforms and ask me 'is it real'? I've already set a clear boundary about it.

And as I said in the post I removed, the time to learn media literacy, critical thinking and intellectual self-defense is NOW. All of this is only going to become more and more important and more challenging and difficult as AI and deepfakes become more sophisticated and widespread.

However, you do not need to be able to debunk sophisticated AI product to be able to tell what's real and what's not. All you need for that is to use your brain and think over what the likelihood is that GG and DD are going to release an actual photo of them together?! Like, people... come on. You should know better than that by now.

Especially, as Vic pointed out, with DD smiling brightly like a little fawn. If you really think he's going to sign off on that, you've learned nothing about him at all.

Accounts that are feeding this ridiculousness, and also the material coming from HZT, are not to be trusted!

I know I get pissy about things like this, but it's because I want you to be safe out there, and not deceived by grifters and charlatans. Unscrupulous people should be avoided. Like Vic said, this stuff is not harmless. It can harm you, it can harm GG and DD.

i think the universe is clowning me ( not in a good way ) cause i was just talking about AI/deepfakes related to our boys in my last round-up. i lightly talked about it there cause i honestly didn’t have the capacity to make a whole post, tho at the back of my mind, it was a topic i was interested in exploring. what changed my mind is i found this post on weibo and they were discussing a photo and how “real” it seems. it doesn’t help that it circulated 9/5 and everyone had their cpn goggles on.

and i think most of you have seen it and have your own takes.

i absolutely have no problem with people finding this cute and doing their own little wishful thinking. sure. go ahead. in the realm of bjyx fandom, there are a lot of things that i’m open about. this post is mainly about xz and wyb (notable) public interaction & thoughts with AI but a huge chunk is how it affects the fandom. if you are someone who thinks it’s harmless and we should all just be happy, then this post is not for you.

between the two, XZ in his marie claire issue directly discussed AI:

"Don't you think that the emotions between people have never changed? Old movies will always be read and watched, and old songs will always be listened to over and over again, because the emotions sung by truly classic works remain unchanged through the ages. Only sincerity can move people." Xiao Zhan seemed to have a sudden inspiration and compared it with AI, "I think AI cannot replace humans. Maybe its technology can one day surpass the limits of humans, but that kind of complex emotions , humans far surpass computers. It can be said that humans are the most accurate, mysterious, and complex supercomputers."

Xiao Zhan will pay attention to AI, just like he pays attention to all new things in the world that are deeply related to people. He watched the news and read things written by AI. The depth of thought and logic of thinking made it incredible. Perhaps, in some job competitions, the threat of AI to human beings is already close at hand, but he still firmly believes that AI cannot replace face-to-face communication between people, whether it is immediacy or complexity.

this is so xiao zhan of him — and he is absolutely right. you cannot manufacture the sincerity and that human touch. i also think that him being an artist ( illustration/design etc ), he must have more things to say about the use of AI in an industry he was previously in. the marie claire interview was 2023 and with the impact it has now, i think he may have more things to say.

as for WYB, i can clearly remember him doing that popular douyin “transformation” into a cartoon/character. one of those trends that i can say is a “positive” output from this technology. this was in 2022, and the way this advanced into what it is now, being able to make actual edits by just giving prompts is far from that cute transformation. recently, we were also discussing how his wechat profile photo appears to be AI generated.

both of them also have direct/indirect connections with AI. from the stuff they endorse having AI technology embedded in it — XZ for Honor and WYB for Redmi. to editing of their dramas. their day to day life, it’s all in there. knowing how technology is applied in China too, it’s virtually impossible to not have some AI involved in whatever they do. whether they know it or not.

it’s unavoidable, and as XZ said, it definitely has the ability to surpass what humans are capable of.

now let’s move on to the photo in question. one argument is that this was apparently fed to another AI and the result is that it seems to be true.

The user now needs to determine whether this photo is AI generated. First, look at the facial details of the person, such as the naturalness of the facial features, skin texture, etc. From the picture, the facial features, expressions and overall texture of the person do not have obvious AI-generated elements, and it looks like a real photo of the person. But more accurately, this is Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo.

it seems counter intuitive to use an AI to detect the validity of something that is also AI generated. and by the looks of it, it used DeepSeek. i have no issues with DS, i just have an issue with people using AI to get the truth. WYB suffered because of this recently, with DS pulling out all the anti talk and claiming it as “information” on the subject.

the death of critical thinking will truly be the end of us all. a quick examination of the photo will tell you all you need the know tbh. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

p2: i know WYB has a very prominent adam’s apple but he doesn’t have 2. lol. he doesn’t have ridges like that on his neck — no one does.

i think there are more, but these are the obvious ones i got when i first looked at it.

yes, it’s all clowning but what if it isn’t for some? i found some comments that appear to be sincerely believing it. going as far as looking into the source and making it into some conspiracy that xz and wyb “gifted” it to us. which they don’t need to. how narcissistic are you to think they owe us that tbh. and knowing XZ, he wouldn’t even sign off on a botched photo like this. lol. and let’s not even add WYB? cool guy? he will not sign off on a smiling photo of him like that.

this fandom have our fair share of edits and at least for me, it’s easier to draw the line if it’s video edits of their drama characters. that’s fiction. that’s AU. edited photos of public pictures they shared is okay too, cause you know the source. especially magazine shoots, aesthetic wise, it’s perfect to photoshop together. but recently, i’ve been seeing more “convincing” ones and the reason why this whole post was made in the first place is a perfect example.

there is a difference when you go the deepfake route — especially since it affects real people. XZ and WYB are real people. i think sometimes, we forget that. these things that we think are harmless have real world effects on them. and yes, this could be a minor issue. but how far will we go? what kind of edit? how it will affect them? We want to think that the CPF circle is this closed-knit-no-one-cares-about-us group but it isn’t. there are a lot of eyes watching. there are people waiting on the wings, looking for the opportunity to use us as their tools to destroy XZ and WYB. i’m not fear mongering. this happened a couple of times already. this is why i hope everyone will approach news/candies with caution. and why oftentimes, i tend to over explain. this fandom have so much disinformation and things lost in translation already, — add deepfakes/AI to the list — *whew* it’s hard to be a CPF 😂😂😂😂

i’m not trying to preach anything or rain on anyone’s parade. just food for thought. maybe we can all re evaluate how we interact with this kind of content and a reminder that XZ and WYB are human beings.

hi....what do you think the reason or contribution to the success of the untamed? Do you think new or other BL/bromance from china will eventually surpass THE UNTAMED?

It's true that The Untamed was quite successful. I have heard a lot of people - especially solos - trying to downplay its success over the years, but it did well.

The best proof of that is just how many productions lined up afterwards to try to duplicate that success, and many young up-and-coming actors scrambled to secure such projects in hopes that their careers could follow the same trajectory as GG and DD's.

Unfortunately these projects are stalled and are unlikely to ever see the light of day, and most of the actors probably dread being associated with them now that they've moved on in their careers. Being associated with BL is risky for various reasons.

There are a lot of reasons why The Untamed was so successful.

Outstanding, exceptionally well-written story with a lot of emotional depth and compelling, powerful, believable intrigue and conflict, both internally within the characters and externally in the world of the story.

Many relatable, sympathetic characters that audiences can get emotionally invested in.

Well-acted and directed. The chemistry between the actors - especially between Lan Zhan and Wei Ying, but also between almost all other characters - was outstanding. Look at the chemistry between Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao, or between Zue Yang and anyone he shared a screen with. Between Lan Qiren and Wei Ying. Name any two characters in that show and chances are better than good that their onscreen chemistry was riveting.

Visually beautiful, with a cast that is equally beautiful and appealing to audiences for that reason alone. Audiences enjoy watching pretty faces.

The soundtrack cannot be ignored. So many memorable songs, beautifully performed. It almost stands on its own in this respect.

We also can't ignore the fact that the story was already quite popular among a certain audience, and the show launched with that audience already eagerly waiting. The fact that it was BL also played into this. It meant that the show had a lot of hype and was heavily discussed before it even aired.

(I'm realizing I've never done a full review of The Untamed, and that's unacceptable! I have so much to say about it.)

In any case, the show did well because it was good in spite of some of its challenges. It won a lot of people over that might not have otherwise enjoyed anything like it. People keep using the term 'cultural phenomenon', but it does apply here. It had a special kind of impact that still holds to this day.

Is it the best Chinese drama ever made? Of course not. But it will likely always be one of the most well-known, one of the most memorable and one of the most well-loved.

Will other BL dramas ever surpass The Untamed? It would be impossible to answer that question. My opinion is, it's not likely. Even if a BL drama were to outdo The Untamed in terms of viewership and popularity, I don't think it would ever enjoy the special set of circumstances The Untamed did to make it a cultural phenomenon on the same level.

Of course anything could happen, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. The government has specifically targeted BL projects as undesirable, as corrupting youth and presenting an image that doesn't align with how they want China to be seen. This is an extremely anti-queer government, and even if such projects are allowed, being associated with them is currently inadvisable.

You can read a detailed analysis of this from the amazing @potteresque-ire, which can be found here. It was written years ago, but most of it still applies. If anything the climate has become even more hostile in China for queer topics.

So I wouldn't hold my breath on seeing any huge new BL projects emerging from China in any kind of mainstream way in the foreseeable future.

Yes, watching their shows and movies on authorized platforms absolutely will help them and help their careers.

We don't know what the specifics of their contracts are, or how much they would directly benefit financially, however, anything that demonstrates their ability to draw audiences or that brings revenue to the platform is a sign to potential investors, platforms, producers, etc. that GG and DD are a good choice for participation in their projects.

It also shows brands, especially international brands or Asian brands that want to break into broader international markets, that GG and DD have the kind of widespread popularity that will make them worth working with.

And at the very least, it will show those platforms that there is an audience for GG and DD's projects, and ensure they continue to pursue licensing to air those projects.

I encourage everyone to watch their projects. Most of them are quite good, and all of them are interesting to see just for the sake of following their careers. Even the ones I didn't like, I found it enjoyable to watch their performances.

Don't forget to search for their projects on your favorite streaming service. Chances are good that it carries at least some of their more popular works.

For all those who don't know what BXG day is, it’s essentially ‘turtle birthday’, and it’s celebrated every year on September 5th. It is chosen for a couple of reasons:

It falls perfectly between DD’s birthday on 8/5 and GG’s birthday on 10/5.

GG and DD are believed to be 95% compatible, so 95 is a very significant number for turtles.

• revisiting the recharging/powerbank cpn because a new bts connected to it was released

• yibo’s day candies part one - the birthday letter and the banners

• yibo’s day candies 1.5 which is about the comments, the color red and a not-so subtle theme in the chanel coco crush ad

• the fact that bobo’s bday post is him climbing a snowy mountain is not lost on me. i know that this is not at all cpn related and it is a personal triumph for him to try that. but as a clown, the symbolism is strong on this one. the “tagline” of the fandom is more than just that. it’s not easy to be side by side atop that snowy mountain. it’s gonna be tough. it will take everything that they got, but it will be worth it.

• XZ going home from work earlier than usual on WYB’s birthday - there were also some talks of WYB being in SH which i’m not sure cause 1.) it could be the usual hearsay among cpfs to make candy 2.) on 8/8 morning WYB was photographed at the airport from BJ to SH. which he did because he has an event later in the day and that’s the time he allows himself to be seen. this month was truly a delight! it’s the kind of month that made turtles stronger (in clowning) and probably made others curious or take a second look. 💛💛💛 see you next month! 9/5 is the date to watch out for!

The Shanghai 8 Hours is a team relay race where multiple drivers trade off to complete the event. Each driver must complete at least 100 minutes of driving time. Yibo is racing in the second rotation.

These types of races are meant to be a test not only of speed, but of equipment durability, driver stamina and team strategy. It will be a very challenging race for all participants, mentally and physically.

I've put you as anonymous because I don't want you to feel uncomfortable with my response, as it's nothing against you personally - it's just my feelings on this kind of thing.

For some reason that I will never understand, there's a certain segment of the fandom that focuses a lot of their time and energy coming up with melodramatic edits of DD's public appearances, and then weaving elaborate fantasies about what's going on in his head. They paint him as a despondent, emotional, near-tearful man barely able to hold it together in the face of the cruel world that hounds him.

I want to state this as emphatically as possible without being too much of a dick: these videos are fantasies that bear absolutely no resemblance to reality. Once you get to know DD a bit better, I'm sure you'll see that too.

DD is a no-bullshit guy. He's not the sort of person to stand on a stage with a quivering lip. He's much more likely to get angry than to get sad about the kind of BS he endures or witnesses.

And this should be abundantly obvious if you look at raw, unedited footage of these appearances, especially from different angles. Even the video you've shared me, Anon, shows clearly that he is behaving absolutely normally, with no hint of tearfulness.

Here's my regular reminder that if you find it on TikTok, YouTube or Instagram, it's almost certainly BS. Those platforms are overrun with false and misleading edits, AI trash, anti garbage and the like. They are not reliable sources.

I invite you to go stand in a mirror and look at yourself from various angles. Notice how the light catches the very normal moisture in your eyes when you're looking from certain angles. You're not tearful, but your eyes shine. This is absolutely normal.

Yet there are fans out there who will go to lengths to find shots of our boys from these angles and present them as evidence that they're dramatic characters in their heartbreaking fanfiction fantasy.

This type of material is misleading, and (in my view) disrespectful of GG and DD.

I want to remind everyone to be very cautious about letting our own minds run away from us on these kinds of things. CPN is one thing, but when we talk ourselves into believing elaborate dramatic narratives about a couple of moments of video footage, it's time to step away from the computer and get some fresh air.

Ultimately none of us really knows what GG or DD is thinking at any given time, including me. It's exceptionally important for us to always remember that, and to take everything - including our own thoughts and feelings - with a huge grain of salt.

It’s been a year since I got to know WY and XZ through The Untamed. Ever since then, I’ve liked XZ a lot and then I started liking WY too. I've liked their interactions and felt they were close that time.

Later, last December, I stumbled upon BJYX. At first, I thought it was just fans being delusional. But when I searched more about them and the hate their fans have for each other, I came across your blog and Tumblr. After dwelling deep, I too became a turtle.

I come from a very religious place where many people are still homophobic and misogynistic.

I want to be someone who respects everyone equally. When I read your posts about your socio-political views and about queer people, I feel like I’m learning so much about the world and people’s struggles.

I have to say, it's not at all uncommon for people to start from curiosity about why GG and DD's solos are at each other's throats and end up becoming a turtle, but it always gives me a chuckle nonetheless. Those solos are their own worst enemies! 😅

Other CP do exist in China, of course. Dozens and dozens of them. Including a few small ones shipping GG and DD with other people. I don't know much about what they get up to, because I think it's important to stay in our own lane. Live and let live. Other fandoms are none of our business (in my opinion).

And for the most part celebrities seem to tolerate this to some degree. In most cases, supertopics are harmless. Many of those CP are character CP, not CP between real people, so that also makes it a bit less potentially disruptive.

Do other fandoms look for kadian, couple's clothing, etc? Absolutely. Maybe not to the degree that turtles do, I don't know. We've stuck around for a lot longer than most CP fandoms tend to last, and we've likely become a bit more sophisticated at this kind of thing than most CP.

I would say, though, that the fact that the BXG fandom continues to thrive and be fed is definitely unusual, especially considering how relatively high profile and active we are as a fandom.

I do know that straight celebrity couples have been outed in the past via a few small coincidences that are the kind of thing that is routine for turtles, and something we have literal mountains of by now. A few overlapping flight schedules, a few similar clothing items, that kind of thing, and the couple is forced to acknowledge their relationship.

But as I said, it's none of our business. At least in my opinion - everyone is free to make their own choices. I personally prefer to stay in my own lane and focus on GG and DD - not on other fandoms or other fans.
