and then they keep calling me they anyway lol
Idk really what I wanna say about this one. I'm struggling with my gender and presentation lately and am trying to find my place in a world that doesn't know how to make room for women like me.
It's unfortunate that I have to say this, but on a post like this I feel it's necessary: this is not an invitation to be transphobic. If you leave a transphobic comment or tag on this post you will be immediately blocked. I am not a TERF, and this blog is a safe place for any and all trans and gender-nonconforming folk.

had philosophical thoughts about my tarantula and our shared sentient existence on this earth while listening to Scylla by Jorge Rivera-Herrans, 42 dead 700 injured
owning a solitary, simplistic animal with a 20 year lifespan that is fundamentally and biologically incapable of comprehending the concept of attachment or affection is something i highly recommend btw 10/10 im being so serious

INTRODUCING: All five billion of my beloved creatures. Descriptions are under each photo!

First up is Monica - a 7 year old domestic shorthair, who I found in a ditch as a 5 month old, skinny, stunted kitten. We have been inseperable ever since - she is easily the most velcro-tempered of all the cats, and spends every possible moment on my lap.

Next up is Kumo! She is about five years old - I got her when she was one, from the humane society I worked at at the time. When I first met her, she was nursing seven kittens, and I was told the volunteers called her Lemon Drop because of her bright yellow eyes. She is a very sweet girl who loves to wander around the house carrying whatever she can find (socks, earplugs, toys), loudly announcing to us that she's brought us dinner for the evening.

Next on the cat list is Eevee - my partner's cat, from before we lived together. She is about 14 years old, very cranky, will smack anyone without hesitation, but is secretly very sweet if you're respectful of her (strong!) boundaries.

And finally (for cats), is Cassian, AKA Cassi. He's our youngest cat at 2 years old - we got him as an eight week old kitten from the shelter I was working at. He is easily our most confident and outspoken cat - being raised from birth in a foster home and then adopted into a house full of people who adore and treat him like he put the stars in the sky means he is an absolute brat who is 100% convinced the world revolves around him and him alone.
Now, on to dogs, we have:

Hazel! She is (probably) around five years old, DNA tested and found to be basically an "everything" mix, and I've had her for around two and a half years now. She was also adopted from the shelter I worked at - same one as Cassi - and came into the shelter with six young puppies after being transported from a municipal shelter in Kentucky. She is incredibly sweet and mellow, with some quirks that come with being a stray from the south. She is terrified of any noise that sounds like a gunshot, doesn't listen to anyone ever (first dog I've ever had that I can't teach to sit) and has a strong hunting dog drive that leads her to point to every squirrel she sees with the focused intensity of a purebred bird dog. She is very maternal, and quickly adopted Cassi as her own when we brought him home.

Next up is Fozzie, who is a seven year old pit bull/lab/german shepherd mix and was my partner's dog before we lived together. Originally from a shelter in California, upon DNA testing him we discovered that he is nearly half german shepherd, with relatives who are show and working strain dogs, some of which are imports from Germany. This was incredibly unexpected, although it definitely shouldn't have been, as he is an anxious, stranger-suspicious Velcro dog whose temperament perfectly encapsulates that side of his family. We joke that he's technically a bastard, because we assume somebody's purebred GSD got loose and adventured around to every female dog in the area, leading to his existence.

Last in the dog category is Sameen, AKA Sammy! She is a year and a half old, primarily pit bull and pyrenees with some anatolian shepherd and american bulldog, and our youngest dog by far as well as being the only dog I have ever raised from a tiny puppy. She was eight weeks old when we got her, and is a double merle who is deaf in one ear (the white one) and has a diagnosis of MOD - Merle Ocular Dysgenesis. This means she has several congenital eye defects from the double merle gene that cause her significant visual impairment - namely micropthalmia, microcoria, and jagged/misshapen pupils. She is a very sweet, cuddly puppy who loves every person and dog she has ever met. Temperament wise, she is basically perfect - the only struggle we have is that she struggles with dog to dog resource guarding in the home - an ongoing challenge we are still learning to address.
Finally, we have the exotics, starting with my (for the moment) one and only rabbit:

Dutch! And yes, I know, he's a dutch rabbit named Dutch. My partner named him after the Red Dead Redemption character, and now I must forever live with the shame of introducing him to people who may or may not assume I'm the laziest name giver in the history of the earth. Words cannot describe how much I love this rabbit - I found him sitting under a bush during a nasty cold snap in late December a couple years ago, and it took my partner (god bless his willingness to entertain such shenanigans) and I nearly three hours to catch him. He lives in our unoccupied attic bedroom, outfitted and proofed to be a free roam rabbit room that also functions as a second living room.

Next up is Corvo, an approximately five year old ball python and the first snake I've owned in a very long time. She sparked my love of designing bioactive enclosures for my exotics, and I am currently in the process of creating her upgraded and hopefully final 4x2x4 PVC home.
TW for arachnophobia for the next photo:

This is Thiala, my Costa Rican zebra tarantula. I adopted her from my current job when we got a massive impound of over 20 tarantulas. Her age is completely unknown except that she's a mature adult female. I pretty much never see her - she came to me in an inappropriate enclosure with way too little substrate, and once she was given substrate she created an elaborate tunnel system and only comes out once the whole house is asleep.

And last, but not least, is Mina, a two year old American toad I rescued from a busy parking lot when she was no bigger than my thumbnail. She is actually male, as evidenced by her calls, her small size, and her black throat patch, but by the time she developed secondary sex characteristics I had been referring to her as she and Mina for so long that it stuck.
If you read all that, thanks for sticking around to get to know everybody! This should really be my only post that isn't art related - it just seemed important to get everybody named and introduced before I started releasing art featuring them.
-------------------------
I would also like to include a photo of a very beloved rabbit of mine who died in an accident last year. She was a young Cinnamon mix named Billy, and was Dutch's bondmate. We are still very much grieving and struggling with her loss, so I wasn't sure I wanted to introduce her here, but it seemed wrong to leave her out completely even though my art will likely rarely, if ever, feature her.
RIP Billy. We loved you very much.

Welcome!
This is an offshoot of my personal blog where I will be posting art journals, sketches, and drawings, mostly about my pets or just stuff from my general everyday personal life. I live in the northern US with my partner and work at an animal shelter as an animal care tech.
The animals who feature in my art are as follows:
4 cats (Monica, Kumo, Eevee, and Cassian)
3 dogs (Fozzie, Hazel, and Sameen)
1 rabbit (Dutch, yes that's his actual name)
1 ball python (Corvo)
1 American toad (Mina)
1 Costa Rican zebra tarantula
You can find their photos and individual descriptions here.
I will tag politics and animal death automatically, and will try to tag other obviously triggering material as I go but if I post something that someone would like me to tag for filtering reasons just shoot me an ask and I'll plug it on there (within reason).

it me
