Disrupt at ABC NO RIO, October 1990
Disrupt were from Boston, but they came down to NYC and played at ABC NO
RIO often enough to feel like a part of the local scene. They were funny guys—a unique crew with strong accents and a cooler full of Budweiser. They were also one of those bands that gained so much international notoriety after the fact, which makes looking back on seeing all them crammed onto a tiny ABC NO RIO stage, including Jay mid-air, and none of their faces even visible behind the hair all the more humorous and iconic. - Chris Boarts Larson

“PMA. Maybe you’ve heard it shouted on stage by a muscle-bound lead singer of a New York Hardcore band. Maybe you’ve seen it sloppily graffitied on a street corner—it’s three letters that pack a punch, and the command is simple: Positive Mental Attitude. In short, it means that even when the chips are down, you focus your mind on persevering. Get your head right and your life will follow. Think positive and good things will happen.
But goddamn if it’s not easier said than done.”

The French New Wave film movement introduced the world to a new way of looking at cinema and its possibilities. While some of its male filmmakers went on to enjoy international fame, it’s real heart and soul—and true political auteur—chose a less glamorous path. Never sacrificing vision, Agnès Varda’s career has lasted over sixty years, and she’s still kicking ass to this day.
James Rosario takes on the leading lady of French New Wave Cinema, Agnès Varda in this installment of One Punk's Guide to The Movies.
