A Night of Fallen Day by Samantha Shannon Review
Tumblr media
I made a new acc to post all of my reading updates ! Yay! If you guys are interested I’ll probably be posting monthly updates. Mostly fantasy & psychological horrors like A Little Life. lol. I’m using this to get all of my thoughts and feelings out so be nice if I mess stuff up! I just want to word vomit where like minded people can appreciate it, okay!?!!?
!!SPOILERS!!
Not even sure where to start with this book. I adored Priory, but this took it to an entirely new level. This book was written so well I felt like I was right there with Tuva & Glorian and everyone else. The emotional turmoil had me sobbing every 5 chapters I wish I was joking. From Tuva’s loss of her baby to Glorian’s parent’s death and all the other trauma, I was a literal wreck. The amount of jealousy I felt from Glorian & Kind Bardholt’s relationship should be intensely studied. I haven’t felt such a pure, loving father daughter bond like that since Atticus Finch. I loved the way motherhood was portrayed, too. The line: “Dumai knew her mother was angry with her for absconding to the North, but she also knew she was already forgiven.” Is that not exactly it??? That is it !!! Mother’s forgive, they love us through everything ! That bond is so sacred and nuanced and Shannon portrayed it and its versatility so well. Through Tuva forgiving Siyu and chasing her over and over, to her grief persisting over years from the loss of her child, to her leaving everyone she knows to find him?? And the countless other examples. Truly beautifully done.
My heart shattered with Kanifa’s unrequited love and his acceptance of it. He loved her and that was enough, he never once made her feel guilty for not loving her back. One thing that I am upset about is the lack of coverage on Wulf and Thrit. I wish we had more of them! I would love a novella of them traveling or even just being happy, that’d be enough. There are absolutely 0 complaints on Tuva & Esbar’s relationship. I loved the consistency, even when one (Tuva, really) made mistakes there was still love and acceptance. The enemies to lovers with Dumai and Nikeya was perfect, too.
Shannon was able to fit so many unique & well written characters and stories in one book, somehow bringing them all together in a wonderful way. Besides Glorian and Dumai of course, but I’m pretending like they met and everything went swimmingly.
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
