Kinds Of Blue #41 (Far Hills) by: Don McKay
Viola, cello, double bass, the distances
deepen and address us. What is this language
we have almost learnt, or nearly not
forgotten, with its soft
introspective consonants, its drone
of puréed names? It says we have to mourn
but not grieve, it says that even loss
may be a place, it says
repose. The eye would like to fold its rainbow
like a fan, and quit
discriminating between this and that,
and indigo and mauve,
and go there. Once,
while sleeping in my down-filled sleeping bag
I dreamt of Eiders, diving
and diving into the dark Arctic Ocean, and
woke
bereft and happy, my whole mind
applauding.

I'm fine, and you?
Fine = happy, sad, pissed, lonely, depressed, hungry, tired, confused, wired, stressed, alright, ok, excited, anxious, nervous, scared, emotional, overwhelmed, good, amazing, fantastic… this list goes on even longer. This is the answer that almost guarantees you won’t have to explain any feelings whatsoever. This is the one that people will accept as a positive state where no worry is required. And whether your car was stolen or you made your favourite pizza for lunch, it makes no difference. You’re fine.
People only care and ask tons of questions when you’re not fine: which is absolutely not the same thing as when you are fine. Because now you have to deal with whatever it is your feeling and you have to carefully express it with anyone who’s asking.
Besides, what will people think if I admit that I miss you?

How are you?
I hate this question. More than half the time people don’t care about the answer. They don’t truly listen. Sometimes, you don’t even have enough time to answer before the person has walked away and asked the next guy. Why ask then? Because it’s the most generic way to keep track of the all the people you know: The people you work with, the people you bump into on the bus or at the mall, your family, your friends, friends of friends, people you were once friends with, people you try to avoid, people you haven’t seen since childhood, people you haven’t spoken to since last year/five years ago… the list goes on quite a bit. All these people who give the same generic answer time and time again to a question that has been asked so many times that they don’t even care about giving you the honest truth.
I’m fine, and you?
