As a fanfic writer who didn't start writing until they were 40, I feel seen.
shaming and making fun of people for still engaging in fandom activities once they reach a certain age is so embarrassing because why are you giving yourself an expiration date of time you have fun? why are you not-so-indirectly saying you will stop having fun once you reach a certain age? or do you really believe you have to stop engaging in fandom activities and having fun once you turn (x)? do you not think you will, what, live that long and turn that age too? do you think fun will suddenly stop for you and life will all of a sudden lose its meaning once you reach a certain age? how sad to be giving yourself an hourglass and just waiting for your time of having fun to run out.
adults can and should engage in fandom activities if it's what makes them happy.
adults can and should continue doing whatever they like doing as teenagers if it's what makes them happy.
age is just... part of life. it's a part of me and it's a part of you. shaming people for something you will have to go through (unless you don't think you will live that long) is such a loser behavior. indirectly saying you will stop having fun once you reach a certain age isn't the flex you think it is. it doesn't make you look "cool and edgy", it makes you look miserable.

AU where I ship em as an old married pair who meet and realize their partners suck.
Also, that whole movie shoved in a series worth of plots into 2 hours.

Two old farts in a haunted house? One has a kid from an old marriage, the other has a banshee x-wife who tried to kill him? Like, he meets her while trying to escape his ex and she agrees to marry him instead since her fiancé admitted to not loving her except for her money. But she needs to be married to keep the house and he wants to be human, so marriage of inconvenience but they end up liking each other and stage ghost stuff for her show. Something something he lives or she dies and we get a dramatic ending.

Not a babe shipper, but i keep seeing people in the tags say “this movie isnt for you, beetlebabes!! 😤” all shaking their fists, and im just thinking “yall are lying to yourselves” ahaha. Its not even subtext?? Srry if this is put of pocket its just one of those little bizarre quirks of the fandom that baffle me.
Bless. The antis can shake their tiny fists of rage and cry that the new movie isn't for beetlebabes. They had the musical, we get the cartoon and the movies. Cope and seethe.
Imma just be over here with Queen Winona, running ideas for my next beetlebabes fic by her, and re-watching the shippiest Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailers we can find.

I'm an old beetlebabe and I co-sign all of this. There are some new fans out there that are absolutely wilding if they think they have any place in telling grown-ass adults with partners/jobs/kids/furry kids/mortgages/Roth IRAs/a mostly-full set of silverware/etc. who we can and can't ship. Child, I ship grown Lydia and Beetlejuice because I identify with Lydia, Beej is hot, and I'm old enough to be your grandmother. Go to bed.
Hi a closet shipper here, can you explain more in detail what the musical missed from the original beetle juice stuff? I got into the fandom from the musical and I enjoy it but I’m also looking at the old cartoon and movie cuz that’s where most of the ship stuff is, but anyway do you not like the musical because of the new fans or just your own preference? I’m just curious as most beetlebabes don’t like the musical as I’m seeing it and I’m not rlly seeing any safe side
Hey there closet shipper anon! I’m happy to answer your question. In fact, we have a WHOLE Discord full of users who LOVE the musical and love shipping (and we’ll protect your identity, because it’s wild out there rn for shippers, we have a lot of former antis in the chat that we currently support even!) For me personally, I thought the Musical was cute. It was a fun little romp, but yes, my sourness primarily comes from this new influx of fans who are telling me I’m enjoying the thing I’ve enjoyed for 30 years wrong. Let me tell you, from someone who was ostracized as a kid for liking Beetlejuice and now 30 someodd years later being browbeaten for liking it because I ship the two main characters that were set up as a couple in the first place is a wild ride lol! Hooookay! Differences, there are so many! For one, Beetlejuice originally was set up as a villain - the Musical sort of does this but they make him almost approachable seeming (so, obviously, all the fans wanna get with Alex). The musical missed out on the Big Yuck factor Beetlejuice had originally (he was vile, disgusting, a cretin, a bug-eating slime lord - not JUST a scheming bastard), along with the extremely dark humor in a few places. They also re-interpreted the sexual tension between Lydia and Beetlejuice... in the movie, for example, he lays his two snakey eyes on our Lyds and you can tell exactly (no two bones about it!) what’s going on in his mind. This is reinforced by the subsequent scene where he’s banished by the Maitlands before he can do anything to her - he claims she’s “the only one he can work with”, Barbra is outraged at his pursuit of Lydia for obvious reasons (representing our Good Christian Audience who would also be equally outraged), tries to pick him up and he grows thorns (a visual pun for being ‘horny’), and then claims to be “anxious”. Relief comes in the form of a whorehouse (gifted by Juno as a distraction, she knows what he’s like): Dante’s, and off our disgusting bugman goes to get some play since he can’t immediately get his claws into Lydia Deetz. He of course attempts to marry her later, as we all know - the musical makes a big weird number out of this and tries to downplay his nastier intentions for her (it’s a green card thing! Creepy old guy!), and additionally elaborates his intentions for being alive. In the movie, we don’t REALLY KNOW what his intentions are with Lydia (probably pretty perverse if the whorehouse scene is any indication!) but it sounds like he wants to get “out”. “Out” is BAD. We don’t WANT Beetlejuice to get out, he’s horrible! (Unless you’re a fan of the B-Man, then you want him to get out immediately and wreck this happy suburban Connecticut town but I digress). His intentions in the Musical are relatively pure, his intentions in the Movie are definitely NOT. The cartoon! The cartoon is FUN, we love the cartoon. The cartoon doesn’t pick up RIGHT where the movie left off (because hey this is a kid’s show), but it DOES pick up with Beetlejuice and Lydia celebrating their anniversary! Since the movie ended with a botched wedding scene, anyone who has seen the film would obviously assume that this was the anniversary of that. The cartoon explains in much later episodes that it’s the anniversary of “the day they met”...which...we all know when THAT was (and they celebrate anniversaries repeatedly). They never, ever elaborate on the circumstances of meeting each other, because it’s assumed that...yeah, they met when he tried to forcibly marry her. Where are the Maitlands in the cartoon? We don’t know, but we assume they’re off doing whatever bone-breaking agonizingly boring things they’ve always been doing - AKA, they’re boring. Kids don’t wanna watch normies do normal stuff, they want to have adventures! So the Maitlands are gone as if they never were there. I’m sure Beetlejuice is happier for it. Anyway, Lydia and Beetlejuice go on many adventures! A lot of which look A WHOLE LOT like dates! (Concerts, cruises, resorts, hotel trips, whole summers together, sightseeing, the list goes on). The shippiest material, I’d argue, comes from the toon explicitly since the whole show focused on their relationship. They’re crazy for each other. Beetlejuice can’t LIVE without this girl, it’s reinforced over and over again. The creators shipped it, Tim Burton obviously saw this as the natural evolution of their relationship since he was the producer. They kept as true to Beetlejuice’s character as they could (even with the woman-chasing/lusty stuff!) while keeping it wholesome enough for television/cartoons (and they had to fight with the networks about it repeatedly, there’s SO MANY episodes dedicated to fighting censorship, fighting characters that represented Conservative Christian allegories, and the network/television industry itself in the form of Mr Monitor).  Oh my god. I hope this answered your question??? Anyway, I saw the Musical in both DC and NYC. I was prepped to like it, I’m even drinking my coffee this morning out of the color changing striped mug they have at the gift shop. But the fans are too much, even Brightman left instagram because his fans were too much :/ Sophia up and ditched the entire musical just months before closing cause of her fans. BUT - there’s plenty of musical fans that ship - and we all ship adult Lyds, despite anti claims to the contrary. If you’d like to come to the discord, just drop me another line, I’ll happily invite you (and keep your identity safe!) :) I’m also always happy to discuss this stuff more, so you can feel free to keep sending anons with any other questions you might have! Stay safe out there!
