Predicting Hits in 2012
Charlotta Hedman has a great post over at the Music4point5 blog on using algorithms to predict the chart toppers in 2012.
The mathematicians behind the PR stunts are crunching the numbers over at Shazam and the University of Bristol.
Shazam made a list of predictions last year which had breakout artist Adele as a front runner -- so we can accurately surmise that to top the list you must be an artist that patrons at Starbucks all over the world don't know...at first.
As for the University technical approach, I'll let you decide.

Celebrate a simpler time.

On this day in 1877, Thomas Edison announces his invention of the phonograph.
Ever since Thomas Edison (pictured) created the phonograph after five days and nights hooking up his ears to rubber tubes, the world’s been grooving to the oldies thanks to the miracle of recorded music. But way before there was ever anything remotely resembling an iPod, listening to a particular recording meant listening to a victrola, gramophone, or phonograph, which could sound awfully staticky to our MP3-spoiled ears.
Still, there’s no reason not to break out the old LPs every once in a while and crank up that old-timey music!

It says “It’s taking longer than expected to figure out the perfect track to play next” yet it’s playing songs, just not showing them.

What the hell Pandora?

It made me laugh so hard that two of my top “artists” for this week on Last.fm were audio clips of Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute.

I don't think I've "scrobbled" enough to give Last.fm even a fighting chance. So today's post comes from eBay, where you can see my most recent searches in the middle column. Japanese watches and New Zealand post punk. Same old shit. Now readjust your eyes to eBay's recommended items. Despite the fact that I've NEVER bought a CD off eBay in my life, you can see that this is where the friendly virtual Internet assistant wants me. Then we get into Bat for Lashes, and Them Crooked Vultures??? WTF? I am a HUGE Nada Surf fan, but I own every single one of their records on original pressings. So again. Fail.

Or you could buy MUSIC from ARTISTS. No JK, we certainly aren't legit. It would cost too much too make fun of all the music we want to.
@rankinaaron -- how is the suggestion feature in Rdio?
rankinaaron:
If you haven’t heard about rdio, it’s awesome! It’s like an exact hybrid of Pandora and Lala [the web-based music service that Apple bought a few months back and has since shut down completely]. For 5 bucks a month you can stream unlimited music from the web. For 10 bucks a month you get unlimited web streaming, unlimited streaming from your mobile device (excellent apps for IOS, Android and Blackberry), and the ability to sync as many songs as you want to your phone for offline playback.
Its a good alternative to pirating if you want to go legit for a small price!

Apparently since I love Best Coast, I'll also love Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. -- aside from the fact that I would never love a band with such a stupid gimmicky name, I don't need any more indie boys falling over samplers and banging on anything in site other than a drum set to sound like the Beach Boys and Animal Collective in my life. But thanks for trying Zuckerberg army!

Recommending Wrong gives Spotify a -10 on their suggestions for users who have recently played The Hold Steady. This is a purposefully hard one, because what the hell really sounds like The Hold Steady, or doesn't really give a shit like The Hold Steady, or once performed to an audience of completely confused soccer moms on The Jenny Jones show like The Hold Steady's front man Craig Finn did with his previous band Lifter Puller? Well certainly not the sleepy high schooler folk of Okkervil River, or...Frightened Rabbits who Recommending Wrong refuses to ever listen to.

Given the recent burst of announcements regarding rdio regarding its partnerships with Echo Nest and Verizon, it seems a good time to give my overview of their service. (See earlier entries for overviews of Napster and Thumbplay).
Unlike the moribund Thumbplay or relatively low-key Napster...

I mean, it sounds nice, but I don’t speak a word of it. And I cannot imagine what I have ever listened to that makes it think I’m interested in Swedish music. :/ I haven’t listened to any foreign music in other languages on there.
It isn’t just one or two songs, either, it’s like, every time something I’m listening to ends, “RANDOM SWEDISH SONG” is the default next track :P
/confused
maybe it’s a sign. Maybe I should learn Swedish.
why does last.fm keep playing me Swedish music?

YES! We are scrobbling! As of today, Recommending Wrong has entered the future. No longer will we have to actually leave our room and go and interact with musicians or proprietors of music venues! Gone are the days of actually investing personal worth and time into what an artist has to say via the recorded sound medium! That's right...from now on, software plugins will track how we interact with playlists (usually initiated during long stints of sitting in our workplace when we need some background distraction from what our boss is saying) and give us suggestions for how to carry on with our music taste!
