Villains I Want to See in YA
Villains I Want to See in YA
(When I say âvillain,â I donât just mean antagonist. I mean bad guy.)
Villains who undergo a decent amount of character development (positive or negative)
Villains who are full-on evil but still logical i.e. they arenât just mystically, madly evil
Villains the protagonist loves
Non-dramatic villains (Iâm tired of monologues and sass and charm in villains. Give me villains who are uninterested in attention and flare. They want to do their evil and go home to read a book)
Villains with humanizing issues (anxiety, depression, broken heart, pride, loss, etc) but those issues are NOT directly related to their villainy
Monster villains. Wicked, vicious, horrible villains who are still compelling and dynamic
Villains who have a direct relationship with the protagonist. Whose relationship with the protagonist causes them to undergo development, and their relationship does the same for the protagonist.
Weird villains. Weird weird weird. A sentient rock monster. A teenage girl who consumes raw flesh. A disembodied head. A blob of alien goo that crash lands on Earth. A mythical, magical monkey creature. The protagonistâs sweet younger sibling. Weird.
Hans-from-Frozen-style villains who throw the protagonist and the reader. Bonus points if thereâs a perceived villain who turns out to be Not Evil and the reader doesnât see any of it coming
Villains who keep their mystery. Whose evil is never really explained, but is adequately hinted at
Villains who win
Villains who struggle with morality
Powerful villains. Really powerful villains. Cosmically powerful. Cthulu-type stuff.
Villains that are for some reason obsessed with the protagonist, whether it be that they see themselves reflected in the protagonist or they are fascinated by how different the protagonist or whatever
New monsters. Not monsters based on mythology or monster archetypes, but fresh, new, create-your-own-mythology monsters.
Villains who are really âevilâ or at least bad but still have humanizing moments (think Azula)
Humble villains
Girl villains. Amazingly complex girl villains whose villainy or main reason for being evil has nothing to do with a man. Girl villains who are beautiful but not sexualized. Girl villains who arenât beautiful but are not denigrated for it. Girl villains who are smart but not cocky. Girl villains who arenât overly sassy or that weird thing where theyâre all smileysexyflirty while being evil. Girl villains who donât do that weird thing where theyâre like âAww, is the wittle baby protagonist scawed of meâ like what is that clichĂŠ even about? Why are girl villains usually so weird, especially with male protagonists?
Villains who parallel or foil the protagonist. Bonus points if both are female.
Charismatic villains whose charisma is fresh and new and not the tired old idea of charisma that usually leads to strange but attractive fashion choices and melodrama (especially in monologues)
As always, feel free to add your own suggestions. Also, notice that I did not suggest LGBT people or PoC for villainsâthis is not because having an LGBT or PoC for a villain is necessarily bad, itâs because often most of the representation LGBT people or PoC get is as villains, especially when the protagonists are straight white people. Before you think about making your villains LGBT/PoC, look at if they are some of the only minority representation in your story. Ask yourself if their villainy could contribute in any way to stereotypes associated with that minority. Again, Iâm not saying minorities shouldnât be villainsâthey should be represented in all types of roles in fictionâIâm just saying think hard about what youâre doing and what it says to your reader.

Think about the Marauders doing little things for Remus.
Peter trying to attract extra attention during class so the teacher wonât notice an exhausted Remus sleeping away with his hands over his head and face in his books.
James running down to the kitchens with his invisibility cloak in the middle of the night to bring back a proper feast with all of Remusâs favourite dishes because his mate is hungry and tired and the full moon is approaching.
Sirius attempting to cheer up a miserable Remus with all the bad jokes and puns in his arsenal, and when thatâs not enough, he resorts to changing the lyrics of Remusâs favourite song while singing it rather dramatically.
The Marauders going down to the Hospital Wing as early as they possibly can so that Remus doesnât wake up alone. And if itâs needed, one of them will fake an injury and force Madam Pomfrey to keep him overnightâŚ
