Two years ago, they cleared lots of live oak to make room for luxury apartments and a hotel right next to Cascades Park. I’ve gotten used to the changed skyline when I go there to walk. Yet, sometimes I’m still sad to see how quickly trees that took decades to grow can be wiped away and replaced with new construction. And it’s not just the trees that are gone, there were wildlife, insect, fungus, moss, and plant communities that all relied on those trees that are also gone.
The area was a massive hole for a few months. That's what’s necessary to make buildings like this, a big dead hole, a wound in the earth. What starts deep in the ground, eventually eats up part of the sky.
There’s a Nana Grizol song that says,
“It should be unlawful To live where you can't see the stars.”
I’m starting to agree. I don’t think I could live in a city any bigger than this. The light already drowns out too many of the stars.

I just finished reading "Becoming Kin" by Patty Krawec. The book was full of so much wisdom, especially in the last few chapters where she weaves together everything else in the book to make a clear case for what we do next - to dismantle colonialism and restore our connection to the land and just as importantly, each other.
I’ve seen references to seven generations in the sustainability movement - mainly of dish soap labels. So I wondered if this was the source. According to Wikipedia, “seven-generation sustainability” may come from the Iroquois, who think seven generations ahead and decide whether the decisions they make today would benefit their descendants. So the origin seems to be indigenous, even if the exact source is lost. Maybe the Iroquois or the Ojibwe, or some other group.
I appreciate the Ojibwa version. Seven generations is a far way to look forward and I wonder if, at that long a length of time, we may put an undue burden on the people here and now. This version centers on the now and looks equally to the past for wisdom and the future for hope.

Check out dollar stores. The ones around me have 4 packs of tiny jars for $1.
@ those witches who fill a huge jar for their spells with three cups of ingredients: i don’t understand why at all but i am in awe

The life of inmate Lindsay Saunders-Velez, a nineteen-year-old transgender woman, has been a living hell since she was transferred from a center for juvenile females to a men’s prison. Even though she’s been raped twice in a matter of months, Colorado Department of Corrections officials refuse to transfer her to a female institution or even back to her previous pod at the men’s facility, where she had friends who supported her.
More recently, Saunders-Velez reported that she’d been threatened by fellow inmates in the section of the prison where she’s currently confined — a unit whose dangers have been demonstrated to her on multiple occasions. According to attorney Paula Greisen, who represents Saunders-Velez, her jailers reacted by placing her in solitary confinement, supposedly for her own safety — even though she’d done nothing wrong — before ordering her to stay in the area occupied by those who menaced her in the first place.
We cannot advocate for the #MeToo movement while ignoring Tarana Burke’s founding principle that this is a movement to empower vulnerable women. We cannot advocate against the prison industrial complex, while ignoring the violence this system inflicts on women in particular the trans women of color in our communities. Trans women are regularly sent to men’s facilities where they encounter higher rates of physical and sexual violence, lack of transgender related health care, transphobia, and self harm due to solitary confinement.
