Great Chicago Fire was finally extinguished on this day in 1871. The exact cause is unknown. The most prominent theory is that a cow in the O’Leary barn kicked over a lantern. High winds, dry weather along with the fact that many of the buildings of that time were constructed of wood contributed to the devastation the fire caused. When rains finally came to wash out the last remaining ambers of the fire 300 people had died, thousands of buildings were destroyed and caused $200 million dollars in damage ($4 billion in 2016 dollars), and left more than 100,000 homeless. Despite the devastation Chicago’s physical infrastructures such as transformation remained mostly intact. The troupe of five British writer-actors and one American writer-animator has been called "the Beatles of comedy." It was like nothing that had come before it, sketch comedy wasn't new but the irreverence and absurdity of the show was groundbreaking. On the morning of October 6th 1918 the HMS Otranto carrying approximately 700 troops, mostly US, collided with HMS Kashmir. The Otranto was originally built as a luxury passenger liner in 1909 and was converted to be an armed merchant liner when WW1 broke out. She was used to transport American troops from NY to Liverpool. Otranto and Kashmir were part of a large convoy of 13 transport ships carrying nearly 19,000 troops that left NY on September 28th. As the convoy approached the English Channel between Ireland and Scotland the weather turned. The convoy was battling intense Force 11 winds with and poor visibility and huge waves reaching as high as 50ft. Weather and visibility caused confusion in navigating and resulted in Kashmir ramming Otranto on her port side leaving a 20ft deep and 16ft wife hole in her side. The damage proved fatal to the Otranto. The HMS Mounsey, a small destroyer escort offered some assistance. Soldiers leaped from one deck to the other as the waves caused the ships sides to crash into each other. Many men were crushed or drowned that did not time their jump right and fell between the ships.
