This cover, all the way from 1993 by Art Spiegelman, shows the way the States still sometimes chooses to illusory deal with their gun problem, rather then look at why its citizens shoot people, including children, especially those of color. It is something that needs to be corrected immediately, talked about yesterday, and looked out for tomorrow.

Static is a great film not widely known, nor even easily commercially available, which is tragic, as it damn well should be seen by all.
Made at age 24 by Mark Romanek —who felt that he had to make a film at that age— after meeting actor Keith Gordon on a Brian De Palma set. And actually there is a big De Palma influence over this film, with great visual shots and mood. Very cinematic, Just the way the camera moves at the cross factory is so well done.
As you would expect from a film written by an actor and director, there are many wonderful little character moments, as Gordon plays an inventor lost and dealing with life after the death of his parents in an accident, his mind wandering while working in a cross factory. His interactions with Bob Gunton and Amanda Plummer (who are both excellent) are sly and frank and joyful.
But there’s a mystery to it, with all these expansive visual shots. When you first see the rejected, deformed crosses Gordon keeps, you wonder “what are we watching?”. Really, the entire film is unique and startling. the first time through I genuinely had no idea what to expect from scene to scene, and there is a deep richness to re-watching it.
Please don’t read the capsule summary for it or watch the video shorthand on youtube, try to go into it with as little as possible to discover the delights of this film. I saw it with no expectations, on a little ratty vhs, and it just astounded and thrilled me.
It is so well done, just so beautiful.
And the score is great, incredible even. Brian Eno, Johnny Cash, Japan, Orchestral Maneuver in the Dark, The The and more. One of my favorite songs is This is the Day by The The, and I think this film really encapsulates it. It just used it so well. You can tell Mark Romanek would be a great music video director just by the way he used the music in this film.
Sadly, Mark Romanek doesn’t really seem to care for this film. Or even acknowledge it most of the time. he felt he had nothing to say. Well, if this is nothing to say, I hope he never has anything to say. This is a great movie; a great, obscure, underground 80’s movie, but a great film overall.
It shows just what a person can do with their own intelligence, drive, style and creativity. It deftly uses the wonder of cinema. It’s a beautiful, wonderful piece.
Check it out.
