long (controversial?) Kell rant incoming

kell is kinda VERY MUCH a whiny bitch...like throughout mainly the first and second books. and this is coming from kell's #1 supporter. Because like, yes he *obviously* wasn't treated the best and he has every right to complain, but I feel like he makes his situation far worse than it actually is. Like. Yes, his parents treat him like more of an object than an actual person, but is he not living in a fucking palace? does he not have servants for his every bidding? he can feast like a king. he can wear all the latest luxurys. he's basically guaranteed a job for life (which is more than what most people even in our world can have). He has a library full of knowledge and can train with the priest whenever he wants to. he has breakfast with the fucking king and queen. Plus he's the strongest magician in the world. He doesn't even have to do anything and everyone respects him and wants to be him (yeah, they also fear him but still). ALSO, he has the prince as his brother/best friend, who genuninely loves him and would do anything for him. His best friend is quite literally going to be the king of the world, which means he is also kinda becoming king of the world. AND HE CAN TRAVEL TO ANY LONDON HE WANTS??

Like Lila for instance had like 100x more of a horrible life than Kell, but complains far less (when I say complain, I'm talking both external monologue and internal monologue, fyi). And Alucard?? Guy was quite literally beat halfway to death by his family, and thrown out of the house. And even then we hardly see him complain even though he probably should. And Holland??? Like??? I get why Holland gets pissed off when he sees Kell cuz low-key I would too. Imagine you live in actual HELL, and you see this boy half your age just sighing and frowning all emo-like as if he holds the world on his shoulders like bro if u don't stfu and go practice ur violin lessons or sum. Kell genuinely acts as if he were the picture of suffering but what he doesn't seem to realize is that he's so fucking beyond privileged. some people can't even get a job to feed their families. some people live in abusive households. some people are living paycheck to paycheck. And a ton of people have emotionally neglectful/abusive parents and yet DON'T get the perks he has.

Kell I fear is only looking at the cons of his life. Everybody has their struggles. His parents are undeniably assholes, but compared to all the amazing things he has in his life, I feel like he just whines far too much. Like I feel like most people would trade lives with Kell in a heartbeat. I personally (with two loving parents) would trade lives with Kell in a heartbeat. And we say Rhy is over dramatic lmao

maybe potential fanfic? (read below for context)

i love love reading fanfics all the time. but often I have so many ideas rummaging through my head and I wanna write them out so bad but I've never written fanfic before but I'm gonna go crazy with the prompts I have in my head. anyways. I wanna write a fanfic for shades but I dunno which I should do so help me pick. should I write:

a.) a Kell/Holland fic that takes place a little before adsom and is a canon divergence of sort. basically Holland figures out a way to remove the seal the danes put on him, but to do that he'll need the help of Kell (who is thrilled, fyi, at the potential friendship he and Holland could have). Holland swears that he's only using Kell, but somewhere along the way they become friends. its cute. its fun. very wholesome and also expands on like the magic lore. (this would be like, 5 chapters?).

b.) Alucard proposes to Rhy. this one is less plot heavy and wayyy more character. basically, alucard wants to propose to rhy, but he needs to make it perfect. and who would know rhy best other than his beloved brother and anchor? after getting Kell's blessing (top 10 worst moments of alucards life mind you), Kell offers to help him ring shopping, clothes shopping, and overall plan the proposal night. Kell/Alucard bonding. lots of banter and fun. angst too, and inlaws bonding !! (this would only be a chapter that's like, 3k-4k words long).

c.) Maxim meets young Kell. basically, Maxim is only a little ways into his reign as king, and he and his friends (like Isra, Tieren, and a couple of new characters I'd introduce) who fought in the war together decide to take a group vacation away from the crown and its troubles. they go incognito, and basically are chilling somewhere near the edge of Arnes, closer to Vesk. Maris' ship also happens to be docked that very week, and Maxim doesn't know that his life's about to change forever. its also wholesome. heavier on the angst, but also has lots of funny moments and father-son bonding. (this one would have me create a couple oc's since we don't really know much about Maxim's friends and I haven't read the steal prince but it wouldn't be too crazy.)

i literally just did this but I couldn't resist doing another one because I love rhy

How I feel about them:

my glorious king Rhy Maresh. words cannot describe how much he means to me. genuinely my current and longest book crush I've had. he's so sweet, funny, and such a mentally strong and compassionate individual he reminds me of sunshine incarnate. from his introduction I immidiently knew he'd be my top 3 characters. I love how he's the only magic less user in a story full of magical prodigies and yet he has never let that stop him from being helpful (like during the fight with Osaron, how he brought blankets for everyone who was still sleeping outside. I think that's when I was like 'yup, i'm completely in love with him'). also like he just brings a smile to my face every time he's in the story like damn I get why everyone in the story's obsessed with you (bruh I remember Lila only met him once in the first book and she liked him which is quite an acomplishment). like he's such a good brother to Kell and despite all his privilege has never made Kell feel like an outsider and he was so sweet to Lila. Even to Alucard before he knew why he left him he was still there for him when he needed him (but don't get it twisted: Rhy isn't a pushover and he clearly made that clear when Alucard tried pursuing him again in acol). also he's so funnyyyy like and he's selfless too what else can I ask for I would die for him. anyways he's just adorable I wish I could jump in the story and give him a hug. I bet he gives warm hugs too 🥹🥹

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

Alucard. Obviously. They're absolutely perfect for each other (I feel like they're the same person in different fonts too). And they're just so adorable. I love how they're the only two people who could out flirt eachother and keep up with one another. you best believe when I saw their scene together in agos I SCREAMED. also the pirate captain and his prince? iconic.

also Hastra. does anyone else see the vision? LIKE GUYS THINK ABOUT IT I LOVE IT

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

1.) Kell and Rhy are the best duo in this entire trilogy, and that includes romantic duos. they're so sweet, and their devotion and loyalty to one another is to die for. I love their dynamic, their quick banter, and their love for one another. How Kell gave his life for him, and how Rhy risked his entire tournament for Kell like NOBODY DOES IT LIKE THESE TWO !! I could read an entire book about them just fooling around and I would still want more. they are the iconic siblings of the literature world and I'll die on that hill.

2.) wish we had more Lila and Rhy too like I can see them being chaotic besties just from the minimal scenes we had with them. like when Lila saw him crying and she was like "so who do I have to kill?" and Rhy just laughed I melted inside like they're just so like ride or die. or when Rhy was happy in acol that she was the only person that didn't treat him like glass. Lila could use someone who gives her unconditional support and heals her inner child while Rhy could use a friend that would actually engage in his mischief without sulking 24/7 or someone that treats him less like he's someone that needs to be babysat.

My unpopular opinion for this character:

I wish he never married Nadiya. matter of fact I wish that entire plot line of Nadiya existing and being Rhys wife was scrapped. that's actually the one reason why I'm not reading threads because it pissed me off so much why'd he marry someone when he's with Alucard? yeah I get he needs to have an heir and stuff but like can't Kell have a child? couldn't V make him and Lila have a kid? Rhy could've also like, adopted a kid with Alucard. Or they could've had a surrogate, where Rhy would impregnate her and pay her lots of money to give birth to their child and then like idk, go back home? I'm sure he has enough money to make her shush. like now to me its giving Alucard has become Rhy's side hoe which makes me so sad because he gave up so much for him like there's no way he isn't hurt by this.

One thing I wish had happened to this character in cannon:

I wish he had a fight scene. yeah ik it probably wouldn't have worked out since Rhy can't do magic and all the bad guys have insane magical abilities. but like. Lila had no magic in the first book and she had a decent amount of fights. rhy definitely knows his way around a sword as he is a prince and especially because hes a magic less prince. but he could've had a better fight with Osaron, instead of losing so fast. V could've made him tap into his affinity for fire during the battle so he could at least fight. or he could've had like a crazy fight with prince col when he killed Rhys mother like I would've loved to see rhy go batshit crazy on him. I just wish he was less of a damsel in distress sometimes and started smacking people.

How I feel about them:

ah yes, Holland Vosijik, somehow both underrated and not at the same time. I think he is the best written character in the trilogy by far, and his story might actually be one of the saddest stories i've read. I think Holland is the physical manifestation of hope itself, almost. Because even after going through hell and back somehow, somehow he still believed deep down he could save his world. It was so powerful to me reading that about him. Also, I loved how he isn't necessarily a "bad" person, rather, a product of an environment where kindness has to be snuffed out. And even after enduring everything he still wasn't a bad guy because his intentions were always selfless and for the greater good. Also him being Kell's foil was so interesting to me and definitely one of the best parts of the trilogy. Im SO glad V didn't kill him in the first book. I love his dry humor, his selfless heart, and tbh he's just so cool bro his aura is unmatched. I loved his story, and loved his ending (though I wish he was alive). Genuinely a 10/10 character. He totally carried the last book imo.

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

genuinely? nobody. I think Holland needs more friends rather than a romantic partner. like I genuinely cant think of anyone I ship Holland with.

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

1.) Kell. omg he and Kell would've made the coolest duo had Holland actually put effort into the friendship. and I think by the end of the last book, Holland def saw Kell as maybe not a friend, but a trustworthy companion (he'd never phrase it as friend). I feel like they had so much room to develop their relationship. They could've had a little brother/older brother or student/mentor kind of relationship ughhhh the potential.

2.) Vortalias. From the brief little sections we got on their friendship, I found it my favourite of Hollands past relationships. They were cool, shared the same goals, and got along really well. plus Vor had never given Holland a reason to mistrust him, and never hurt him ever. Also Holland calls him Vor! that's adorable its giving besties for life (I noticed Holland tends to give nicknames with people he likes, like Talya and Vortalias). Low-key might've been the happiest holland has ever been ik his death was BRUTAL for Holland.

3.) also hear me out: rhy. think about it guys. Holland needs someone to make him forget about his troubles. who better than rhy? also think about how both rhy and holland are kings (Holland was supposed to be). They could've formed a friendship based on that had Holland survived. also Holland could teach rhy about white london's history and language! Rhy loves politics and is great at languages, and Holland loves his home. They would've been so wholesome.

My unpopular opinion for this character:

i think Holland is 100% straight. Like, every fanfic on ao3 makes him into men (like vor, Kell, etc) but I just don't see it. like, the only sort of romantic attraction he'd ever had was with Talya. I dunno why everyone just assumed he'd be gay like guys nowhere in the story does it even remotely suggest that 😭😭. like ik headcannons aren't cannon, but they're built off of SOMETHING yk? arguing that Kell is bi is one thing, because even though he isn't it MAKES SENSE because he's attracted to a gender fluid individual. but I dunno why everyone just decided that Holland was gay.

One thing I wish had happened to this character in cannon:

i wish Holland ended up becoming king of white London at the end of acol he deserved his happy ending :(
