a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"
#yup#fandom woes#it's like yes thank you i am aware#i am in fact capable of understanding that on my own#but now i'm annoyed and part of me would like to be a brat about it

in light of the latest heinous space-tourism trip this week I want to share an important quote from william shatner himself after he made the trip:
"Everything I had thought was wrong. Everything I had expected to see was wrong. I had thought that going into space would be the ultimate catharsis of that connection I had been looking for between all living things—that being up there would be the next beautiful step to understanding the harmony of the universe...I discovered that the beauty isn’t out there, it’s down here, with all of us. Leaving that behind made my connection to our tiny planet even more profound. It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered.
The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness. Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna . . . things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral."
#william shatner#earth#occasionally he hits the point incredibly harshly and with no minced words#probably why i hadn't heard more about him going up there until now

Actually, even at the most basic detail, even if "the curtains are just blue," it still gives us some information about the character who has the blue curtains. Maybe the character just likes blue. Maybe blue dye is expensive and it's showing they have money. Maybe blue dye is cheap and it indicates they don't have money but still want some fun things.
Maybe it's not the color we should be paying attention to, but the fact that they're curtains and not blinds. Or the fact that they have curtains at all.
Even if there's no deeper meaning or symbolism behind it, it still paints a more complete picture of the world that character lives in. Or, if the narrator is a character in-universe, it tells us something about the person pointing it out. If nothing else, that they're the kind of person to notice something like that. It's a very human thing to notice and call attention to seemingly unimportant things. It could also be a means of making the characters seem more realistic.
Or the blue curtains are a red herring to draw your attention away from something else. Like we fixate on the blue curtains, and it causes us, the reader, to overlook something else that might have been a big piece of foreshadowing later.

Agreed with these tags. I hesitated to say for sure before, largely because right now in spite of my enjoyment of the game and my general feelings that they got the dynamic between the brothers right, I'm feeling a little cynical towards the devs right now.
But since you bring up the movie, I'm always impressed at their performances there. They manage to pack a lot into not necessarily a lot of lines, and even then, the vast majority of how they are with each other shows up in their nonverbal interactions.
"You're pretty handy with the saw. You been practicing! Too messy for me, though...I prefer a more hands-on approach!" I think about this Hitchhiker line quite a bit. But in particular, I find myself wondering if this implies that he thinks Bubba would try to teach him how to use the chainsaw given the opportunity. Especially since, in the first movie as well as the game, they seem to have a greater sense of camaraderie with each other than with some of the other characters. (Particularly before Sissy dropped on release, since she seems to pal around with the both of them, too.)
Or if it's supposed to be less of a character thing and more of a stealth reference to the bridge scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, where Bubba puppets Nubbins' corpse to appear as if he's the one chainsawing the guys on the bridge.
#though now i kinda like the idea of bubba bringing the corpse along in the second movie because of some comment nubbins made while alive#which bubba took to mean he wanted to learn but never got around to showing him before#tcm game#texas chainsaw massacre#tcm hitchhiker#nubbins sawyer#bubba sawyer#tcm leatherface#slashers#horror

My last Texas Chainsaw Massacre round today, I kept getting myself into trouble with Wyatt, and any time I got into a grapple with him, it wasn't long before the Leatherface and Johnny would converge on my location. I still ended up being the one to catch him in the basement since, even though I got stunned, since I was playing Hitchhiker I could still fit through all the small spaces they couldn't.
Or maybe they didn't want to risk him escaping through another gate while I was crawling around downstairs. But I also think their converging on my location meant his only option was to run downstairs. Otherwise, he'd have run straight into Bubba (can't be grappled with) or Johnny (who at the very least would have meant he'd be stuck in one place for either of us to get).
Always makes me smile just a little when players rush to help each other, regardless of how well their characters get along according to their dialogue lines. I'm sure I'll feel the same way when I finally start playing as the victims, but for now, I think I'll keep playing with the ones I'm familiar with.

Bringing this back because the older sibling has now added "seizure prevention and maintenance" to his list of tasks. Making sure I don't miss any doses, making sure I go to bed at specific times and take naps if I can't do that, and staying at my side the entire time in the leadup to and aftermath of an event.
He tends to require himself to sleep at the end of my bed (or cot if I'm napping) for the entire time in the week leading up to a seizure, to the point that if he suddenly assumes his "human is sick" protocols for seemingly no reason, I know to start paying attention. Thankfully, they seem to be under control now, but I think he's played a decent role in helping with that.
I recently had surgery, and at the time I came home, I had both my cat and one of my grandma's cats staying with me.
- Within hours of surgery, I wake up from a nap to my cat gently sniffing at my incisions with great alarm.
- I was not allowed to shower the first day after surgery, and the cats, seeing that The Large Cat is not observing its cleaning ritual, decided I must be gravely disabled and compensated by licking all the exposed skin on my arms, face, and legs.
- I currently have to sleep with a pillow over my abdomen because my cat insists on climbing on top of me and covering my incisions with her body while I sleep (which is very sweet but not exactly comfortable without the pillow). She also lays across me facing my bedroom door, presumably on guard for attackers who may try to harm me while I'm sleeping and injured.
That's love. 🐈⬛🐈❤️

PLEASE for the love of the universe read anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy written from marginalized perspectives. Y’all (you know who you are) are killing me. To see people praise books about empire written exclusively by white women and then turn around and say you don’t know who Octavia Butler is or that you haven’t read any NK Jemisin or that Babel was too heavy-handed just kills me! I’m not saying you HAVE to enjoy specific books but there is such an obvious pattern here
Some of y’all love marginalized stories but you don’t give a fuck about marginalized creators and characters, and it shows. Like damn
#adding to my reading list#science fiction and fantasy#technically this one is an adaptation#but i will never not recommend 'the last count of monte cristo'#the marrow thieves#can't forget that one

My one Hitchhiker kill of the night involved slashing Leland's ankle and causing him to fall off a ladder. Was chasing him through the basement with Johnny, and I figured what would happen based on the majority of my rounds, was that I'd knock him down and Johnny would finish the job. Tonight was mostly a "Nubbins chases them into his family's waiting arms" night, except for one previous round where I pulled a survivor off of Sissy during a grapple. I don't think she really needed my help, per say, but I play as one of the smaller Slaughters/Sawyers often enough that I figured I'd at least soften them up for her.
I forgot that I'd put some of my points into the Hitchhiker's attack power earlier that evening. In both instances.
Though Nubbins slashing someone's ankle and accidentally finishing them off faster than he meant to seems oddly fitting for him.
Relieved that for now, I can still get matches. Due to my work schedule, I haven't been able to play as much as I would have liked these past few weeks, and I was a bit afraid that they were going to change their minds and take the game down altogether, or that everyone else would have already moved on to their next thing.
Now, if only I could pull some survivors out of hiding spaces. Mostly because the voice lines for those interactions amuse me.
#rin rambles#rin plays games#texas chainsaw massacre#tcm hitchhiker#tend to end up using game names and tcm 2 names fairly interchangeably#hence 'sawyer/slaughter' and alternating between 'nubbins' and 'hitchhiker'#slashers#horror#character death mention

Still digesting the announcement about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game and I guess more than the seeming decision to quit patching and updating it simply because they've run out of DLC ideas (or at least that was my understanding of the claim that it "reached its full potential") I'm somewhat confused by the way the conversation around it almost feels like it's already gone in its entirety. And maybe this is just that fandom in general has changed, that people don't engage with things that are not actively still coming out. But for now, at least, it still exists? At least as far as I am aware.
I don't think this is isolated to just this game. With a lot of things I'm interested in, it feels like the second the book or series or whatever ends, almost everyone collectively moves onto the next thing. Like only things which are still actively putting out new content are worth paying attention to, somehow. And anything which doesn't, might as well be dead.
I won't be supporting the next project. I was only interested in this one specifically because it was based on something I was already specifically interested in. But as far as I can tell, there's no rule which says I must immediately shift my focus once the updates stop coming, or that I shouldn't enjoy what I have until or unless it is taken away?
#was i away when they changed the rules?#rin does fandom#texas chainsaw massacre#tcm game#like obviously i want to keep playing with the stuff i already have unless or until i no longer can#but is that not something people do anymore?#i don't usually play multiplayer games#so i guess i'm a little behind on the 'rules'#rin rambles#more just putting my thoughts out there#not really seeking advice

I read on some of the wikis (so take it with a grain of salt) but apparently at one point Vilmer was supposed to be an expy of Nubbins? So a part of me wonders if some of it is retroactively applying things from both Next Generation and Jason vs. Leatherface, where the character occupying his role does act with more hostility towards Leatherface.
To an extent, I'd also noticed it to a degree with some of the comments on the dialogue videos for the game (though not so much recently) that seem to characterize him as somehow being less friendly to Leatherface than Johnny is, even though the actual contents of their lines would seem to suggest the opposite.
Either way, it's definitely something I've continuously found baffling.
One of the things i find really interesting about Nubbins’ character is peoples perception of him depends a large amount on what their character interpretation of Bubba is.
I’ve noticed that fans who interpret leatherface as being a victim of his family, or not much of a person outside of his disabilities, tend to have a more negative view of Nubbins, often lumping him in with the abusive family member label (even though the opposing canon shows him being the one abused). This being further carried by the Jason x Leatherface comics, solidifying this interpretation of the character to some viewers.
Despite being in the same home circumstances as Bubba Sawyer and despite also being mentally disabled (Both Gunnar Hansen (leatherface) and Ed Neal (Hitchiker) referenced real life mentally disabled people for their performances) his character is treated as more capable and held to higher scrutiny not only by fans but by Drayton Sawyer himself in canon.
My own character interpretation of Bubba Sawyer affects my opinion on Nubbins also, which is probably why I like him so much. I see Bubba as someone who is more capable than people give him credit for. Especially within the family dynamic. He’s not just the physical strength of the family but he has the skills of all family members combined whilst also filling in for the roles of family members which are missing (aka grandma).
Maybe it’s his violence being more on the unpredicatable side or a specific scene or interaction that people are put off by him. I would love to know other people’s thoughts on it bcs I could be slightly biased.
#texas chainsaw massacre#tcm analysis#nubbins sawyer#honestly i keep coming back to this because i'm glad i'm not the only one who's noticed it#but i've never really been good at putting it to words#horror#slashers
