French in the background is the poem "Les Feuilles Mortes" by Jacques Prévert - also available as a heartwrenching chanson.
Come on. It's appropriate.

not for lack of trying 2.3k words/jean moreau-centric/kevjean/oneshot
“I’ve missed you Jean.” Kevin exhales slowly, the lines of his face relaxing at the confession, his eyes fluttering closed and then opening again. Jean has witnessed those same eyes staring down at him while tremors wracked his broken body, wide-eyed, helpless and useless and partially at fault. It’s only been seven months since Jean has been in the same room as Kevin Day, two years before that he’d left the nest and Jean in it, alone with Riko and Tetsuji Moriyama, and Jean’s therapist has told him that the concentration he’s been putting in trying to let go of senseless blame and hatred—except it’s never been completely senseless has it—was good process, so Kevin’s hesitant I’ve missed you buries itself into the marrow of Jean’s bones and he nods, acknowledging words he knows weren’t easy for Kevin to say.
Jean follows Kevin out of the winter banquet.
