Something about the way Zoro doesn't hold grudges that intensely when people wrong him, but the minute someone hurts his nakamas or the people he loves, he crosses name with the fury and conviction of a demon.

If someone is trying to destroy him, he doesn't particularly think any of it. He put his life on the line many years ago. He knows the world is cruel and since he became a pirate, he learned just how unfair it could become out there. Zoro regards his enemies with the respect of a rival, a man who is accepting the challenge and knows the risks.

It's when his nakamas are hurt that he sees red. He would do anything for them, no shame or ego could get in his way. He would be brutal or truly gentle if they asked. He'd look the other way for their sake or act really wise. It's insane just how much he'd bend and break and change for them.

The best part? They don't know, can't imagine it.

They have seen the weight of Zoro's loyalty for others and think "it could never be me he loves like that"— and they are wrong. Which is a total lie.

The core of Zoro as a character is not his dream of being "the best swordman in the world", but the reason behind it. It's like Luffy; he wants to be the King of the Pirates, but that is a mean to an end. The truth is that Zoro wants to protect, he'd die to protect, he'd beg and cry and sacrifice his dreams and his ideals to protect. It's similar to how Luffy would do anything to guarantee the freedom of the people he loves and cares about.

So really, his goal is just a means to guarantee the safety of his crew, even if they don't know it.
