I'm sorry I'm so fucking sorry I know how vulnerable the author was with these but look at them. Who has ever talked like this ever. This is supposed to be the big dark emotional beat before the climax but it is impossible to take seriously at all because it's so immersion-breakingly melodramatic it feels like a parody of itself. Like take it from me I have abusive parents who have put me through a lot of the similar stuff (especially my terrifying rage monster father) so you'd think this would hit me on some level but any impact it would've had is nullified by the fact that it is written SOOO FUCKING BADLY. WHO FUCKING TALKS LIKE THIS. Like all I can think of when reading this is the one scene from Superstore where Cody says "Nobody loves you you're gonna die alone" to Mateo when they are hiding under a table. The diologue in these panels is so ridiculous that you can play it for laughs in a T.V. sitcom and it is basically indistinguishable.

And the reason I'm hyperfocusing on this one panel so much is because I genuinely think it's extremely representative of the wafting scent of "overwriting" that hangs over the whole work. The diologue. Fucking god the diologue in some of these scenes. The dead mom exposition panel is by far the most obvious example but hoooo boy there's more.

But to complaining because that panel is really stupendously dumb so many levels. Like I barely can convey it without you just reading the while comic. Like, it's so obvious that Babystar all the way to the big emotional climax of the thing and realized she had to now convolute a reason for why Nicole couldn't be revived in this weird shadow realm afterlife dream dimension which by the way was also just very recently "explained" and I put quotes around "explained" because it's never actually fully clarified what this world is only the tidbits of how it works that are relevant to the given parts of the story in which they are explained are actually dropped and you're just left to be confused about the rest of it.

God I know I'm sorry I know I'm being mean to a random webcomic that's basically perfectly fine and does what it wants to. Like it is genuinely beautiful and poignant and heartwarming during certain story beats. That one part where Gemma is sitting on the train and simply seeing a child having a silly interaction with his mom makes her long desperately for something she can't have, the cultural object of the "childhood", like, I'm not even a little bit of an age regressor but that's such a specific sorrow I and assumedly many others feel in an extremely similar way, a sorrow I've never seen reflected in another piece media before. Just seeing someone exist in that walled garden you've never been allowed into making you feel such an unexpected and sudden pain deep inside your soul. This comic is also about gender dysphoria to me.

This reply is so funny not only because it uses the typical respectability politics gambit of "Actually disabled people can be useful too!!!" thereby throwing disabled people who cannot produce capital under the bus, but also because the complete misunderstanding and cluelessness you have to have about all history ever to not get why someone would use "euthanasia" to refer to the mass killing of disabled people is insane.

"Art is what makes us human!" Just say you want to euthanize the disabled already.
