Salt of the Earth (Barret/Biggs/Jessie/Tifa/Wedge - Final Fantasy VII)

( day 6 of @romancingbarret based on that one scene in Rebirth bc Barret said THEY GOT TO GO!! technically falls under animals + nature (mostly nature), but can double as another vacation prompt! )

For the record, it wasn’t Barret’s idea.

He was fine with Tifa’s existing cocktail menu. He was fine with sitting in the corner and assessing their finances. And he was definitely fine with staying out of whatever the hell Jessie yapped about this time. Barret set his jaw, groaned under his breath, and ignored the commotion.

Hard to accomplish the latter, however, when the gang scurried over to his table.

“Barret!” Jessie said, slurring her words as she shoved a drink in his face. “You’ve got to try this! It’s incredible!”

Biggs agreed. Something about the salt making an enormous difference. Tifa was at least more reasonable— “Can we really afford a trip to Cosmo Canyon to keep this version on the menu?”—but smiled alongside the others. Wedge struggled to contain his excitement, too, as he awaited Barret’s judgment.

So he abandoned his paperwork, took a sip, and almost dropped the glass.

“Shit,” Barret murmured, “we got to go.”

By morning, he purchased six round-trip tickets.

I need more Barret/Cloud on my dash and if I have to supply it myself, then so be it. 

“…and that’s the end of the chapter,” Barret said, closing the book with a satisfying clip. 

“Noooo,” Marlene complained, “not on a cliffhanger.” 

“It is past both your bedtimes,” Barret said, “we’ll read more tomorrow.” 

“Aww,” Marlene and Denzel laid back with disappointed huffs. Denzel climbed off of Marlene’s bunk and onto the top one. Barret held the blankets up and let Marlene slide under. He pressed a kiss to her head. 

“Daddy, your beard!” she protested, but she smiled at the affection. Barret gave Denzel the same treatment, but with much less complaining. 

“Good night kids,” Barret said, shutting off their light. 

“Night dad!” they chorused after him. He left the door slightly ajar, so the light from the hall could filter into their room until they fell asleep. Right now, however, there was one sleeping beauty he was worried about. 

Cloud had come in a few hours ago from an all-night delivery and promptly took over the couch for nap time. The kids were the ones to cover him up and declare quiet time. Tifa would be after Barret’s hide if he didn’t get some food in the Blondie’s stomach before he let him sleep for the night. He scratched at the end of his arm, having taken off his prosthetic for the night. 

Barret stopped in the doorway when he heard Cloud whimper ever so quietly. The spikes peeking over the edge of the couch were tossing a little in distress. Barret approached carefully. Cloud’s expression kept changing between a grimace and a wince. Barret sank to his knees next to Cloud’s head. 

Very gently, he began threading his fingers through Cloud’s hair. Cloud shuddered for a moment, then relaxed into the touch. Barret knew he was awake, but didn’t stop. 

Cloud’s eyes opened, glowing slightly but the mako was fading from his eyes. 

“You okay?” Barret asked. 

“Yeah,” Cloud said, “just a dream.” 

“Do…you want to talk about it?” 

“Gimme a minute,” Cloud said, rubbing at his face. Barret turned his back towards Cloud. 

“Climb on,” he said. 

“Hmmm…what the kids not want to wrestle tonight?” Cloud said, but he wrapped his arms around Barret’s neck. His legs naturally found their way around Barret’s waist. Barret caught Cloud in a comfortable hold as he gave him a piggyback ride to the bedroom. Cloud rested his head on Barret’s shoulder and just let himself be carried. 

“Hungry?” Barret asked. 

“Not really,” Cloud said. 

“Humph, Sure,” Barret said skeptically, “I won’t tell Tifa I fed you in bed if you don’t.” Cloud didn’t complain about getting dumped quite unceremoniously on the mattress. Barret crawled in behind him. Cloud turned immediately to bury his head in Barret’s chest. Barret rubbed his back, a gentle up and down motion. 

“I gotcha,” Barret said.

Meteorites, it’s time again for the Annual Fanworks Exchange! Sign ups are now open and will close at 11:59 pm EST on June 21st. Sign ups and assignments will be via AO3 (Archive of Our Own). If you don’t have an account, some of the mods do have invitations available. You can message with your email address OFF Anon on Tumblr to request an invitation but they are first come, first serve.

Please read through the instructions carefully, and make sure to give us contact information in case we need to follow up on any details! We want to make sure we make the best matches we can.

Be careful not to spoil your gift for your giftee, but you’re welcome to join in for word sprints, collective screaming at characters for not doing what they’re told, and general shouting of encouragement.
