Rio artists stage show on street in protest against censorship

Far-right state government had shut down exhibition to stop performance about torture

Artists in Rio de Janeiro have staged a pop-up street show to protest against the closure by the new far-right state government of an exhibition because of a performance attacking dictatorship-era torture.

Álvaro Figueiredo, the curator of Literatura Exposta (Literature Exposed), accused authorities of censorship after the exhibition was ordered to close a day early to prevent a performance by the Rio collective És Uma Maluca that featured nudity and plastic cockroaches.

This is not the first time art has been targeted in Brazil as the country has swung to the right. In 2017, a gay art exhibition was shut down in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, after online protests and picketing, while the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art held firm in the face of similar protests after a child was filmed touching the foot of naked artist in a prone position as part of a performance.

On Sunday, Figueiredo announced on Facebook that Literatura Exposta had been shut down on orders from Wilson Witzel, the far-right governor of Rio state. Witzel is a close ally of President Jair Bolsonaro, who took office on 1 January and whose administration runs the France-Brazil House cultural centre that hosted the exhibition.

CHRISTMAS TIME MEMES 🎁 || i mean, it’s already over, but who cares? still accepting because i basically wasn’t here

               December in Rio, aka almost Christmas,  wasn’t a very good time to have loved ones close because it was just too hot. The thing was, it wasn’t only hot, it was also raining. There was this party at a friend’s house. ‘Friend’ – an acquaintance who would be very sentimental if she did not attend the event. They worked together and although it was kind of a lame party, it was free and she was allowed to bring a guest. And to be honest, it couldn’t be that bad. There was free food and free drinks, what would possibly go wrong? Well,  everything. There was no fans, no air conditioner and you may ask: why? That ‘friend’ was in a naturalistic phase, which meant, only the windows were open in a room full of people. The food was all vegan and there would be no problem if it were real vegan food. It was a bunch of recipes, but they only took (partially) the food of animal origin and didn’t replace with other ingredients. Gross. The only alcoholic drink was something with sake. Awful.  ❛  listen. we need a plan. I can’t stand these people. I thought I would, but I can’t. i need your hability to ask nicely if we can open her refrigerator and find something to eat and drink, because if I drink more sake, I’m going to vomit. or we can sneak to the kitchen, but I can’t do this anymore. ❜

Thank God Luiza had decided to be cooperative at last. Every accessory she showcased, Davi said it was perfect on her. And he meant it, luckily.

He got up when she gave him the signal and patted at his pockets to make sure he wasn’t forgetting anything: keys, check; a few loose coins, check; lint, check; wallet, che–

Wait, where was his wallet?

Just a last pat to his own butt back pocket, for good measure. Ah, that was right.

The color drained from Davi’s face, his entire body frozen in place while he remembered having left it on Paulo’s desk after drunkenly almost biting him the night before. So… he had to decide who to let kill him first: the driver, who had been waiting for them for two hours now; Luiza, who’d just been abruptly woken up at five in the morning; or himself, for being a dumbass.

ㅤㅤ‘ Um… ’ It was how street Hamlet once said: to run off or not to run off, that is the question. ‘ Have I said how beautiful and amazing you are today? ’

             His intetions were good. Although Luiza absolutely hates waking up early and being awakened in that specific way, she couldn't offer much resistance because it was something that was important to her brother -- maybe important wasn't the word, but it was something he put on some effort on it, so- you get the point. The last thing to grab to finally be good to go, was her handbag. Everything was in the right place (just because she wasn't an organized business woman, didn't mean that everything in her life would be like that). In the end, that morning moodiness had passed, until--

             Oh. That look. That very familiar look. She knew what was going there. Something was clearly off.  ❛  I'm gorgeous, I know that. what do you want? ❜  Arms are crossed over the chest as the weight is passed from one leg to the other.

As she went about her business in regards to hygiene, Davi went around grabbing what was left of their possessions, whatever was suitable for a weekend out. Since he’d taken most of it to the vehicle, his hands weren’t exactly busy.

He couldn’t claim to be more responsible than Luiza, but, for him, sleeping in wasn’t that important. Specially when he’d planned that trip from scratch.

ㅤㅤ ‘ Sorry, this is a matter of life and death. As in, I will kill someone if anything goes wrong with this. So I will watch you right here– ’ And he sat on the bed. ‘ To make sure you won’t fall asleep as soon as I turn around.’
